This is crazy. What a horrendous time for all involved. You can’t just go around failing executions!!

It's appalling frankly. Regardless of the circumstances. Anyone thinking otherwise is missing the (debatable) point of the death penalty.

MyThreeWords · 01/10/2026 07:00

Jesus Christ that is fucking monstrous. Primitive bastards.

Gettingbysomehow · 01/10/2026 07:00

What on earth? How come euthanasia is successful all over the world but the USA cant manage an execution without messing it up?

Flossyknicks · 01/10/2026 07:04

I have been following this story and I had goosebumps waking up to seeing this as the top story on BBC News.

She was worried it wouldn’t work properly and then the poor victims mother has had to watch it all.

How can the criminal justice system of a developed country produce actions on a par with Taliban extremism and primitivity? The execution would still have been an atrocity even if she had died smoothly, given the circumstances, but this is a whole new level of barbarism.

Legalised euthanasia is a medical treatment so doctors can be involved. Doctors can’t be involved in capital punishment because of the hippocratic oath. Pharmaceuticals companies won’t sell the drugs for capital punishment so they drugs they’re using are old and degraded.

KidsAndDogsGalore · 01/10/2026 07:07

That's horrendous. Hopefully it has wider implications in regards to the death penalty. I mean WTF!!

Emelene · 01/10/2026 07:09

It’s really awful. I was imagining the ambulance/medical team, what a bizarre and disturbing instruction- “please save this woman so we can kill her again?!”

Exécutions are not performed by doctors (understandably) nor will pharma companies supply the drugs needed for an effective exécution, I believe.

Westfacing · 01/10/2026 07:09

I wonder how the State Governor is feeling this morning

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 01/10/2026 07:10

Yet there are people on this site who keep banging on about bringing back the death penalty in the UK.

I assume they'll all be cheering this morning?

shockthemonkey · 01/10/2026 07:10

Cross-posted with grumble, sorry!

LadyChilli · 01/10/2026 07:10

It is appalling for everyone involved.

hattie43 · 01/10/2026 07:11

She took a young persons life so no sympathy but yes if you’re going to put her to death do it right .

Euthanasia is a medical procedure carried out by doctors.

Piranhateeth · 01/10/2026 07:18
  1. Death row inmate for many many years
  2. Receives date and time of execution
  3. Reprieved one hour before execution time
  4. Execution goes ahead and fails
  5. Second execution attempt fails

Words fail me.

HoraceCope · 01/10/2026 07:19

just dreadful
and what will the doctors want at the hospital?

HoraceCope · 01/10/2026 07:20

absolutely barbaric

Stickonstars · 01/10/2026 07:56

There’s so much wrong with all of this.

America is just so primitive.

Purplecatshopaholic · 01/10/2026 08:15

Barbaric is the word I used when I saw this this morning. I’m not a believer in the DP but if you are going to do it, do it properly ffs. Awful all round. Doctors saying if she survives she will likely be brain damaged. And this is in a so-called civilised country.

LunaTheCat · 01/10/2026 08:34

This is horrific. America is not a civilised country.

When was it ever so? You only have to look at its history, as a Country. Shameful.

Lexibletheflexible · 01/10/2026 08:48

Surely they'll have to cancel all executions

They're other areas of the US that are quite backward compared to other developed countries: employment rights, maternity leave, welfare, healthcare, policing, gun culture, international relations that other countries would be criticised much more for. The culture is very different there, much more self reliant, less government intervention.

MuggyMcMugFace · 01/10/2026 14:12

Hearing this news today made me feel sick to my stomach.

Savages.
