Can a new prime minister take office without a general election?

Erm shouldn't we have a general election to vote in a new prime minister as no one voted for Andy Burnham to be in charge.
How is that allowed.
Im sure people voted for Labour because they wanted Kier Starmer to be prime minister. Where did Andy Burnham come from all of sudden.
Can anyone in the government in power be prime minister without a general election.

I've seen some of the questions from the British Citizenship exam. I am British. I've lived here my entire life. I am quite well educated. I couldn't get even close to 100% on that test! Kudos to the new citizens of the UK who managed to pass.

Tbf you just learn it. Like you couldn’t pass a driving theory without learning the Highway Code

Anyone remember the scene in "A Few Good Men" where the Tom Cruise lawyer asks a witness to read out the bit in "The manual" that told them where the mess hall was and where they got their uniforms issued ?

Some people were really disgusting to her, you can’t ignore that.

Sometimes, being kind to stupid people is the worst help you give them.

When you vote in a general election or by election vote for the party with the leader you want as PM
Base this on the promise he's made and whether or not you'd like to have a pint with him.
If he's a she, then vote for someone else unless you want to be her/be her mate/be her lover.

If it's a referendum, use the same rules.

Afterwards, blame it all on the government, and bleat that you thought we needed a change.

A McGonagle reader?

That’s for partially sighted people. They are not illiterate! Illiteracy is a totally different thing. My god…

How so? I’m not being kind, I am acknowledging that there are plenty of people in the world who haven’t had access to information and it’s not necessarily their fault. That’s not kind, it’s just knowledge. Someone used a McGonagle reader as an example of how to help the illiterate - it helps the visually impaired. Lack of knowledge abounds, but we don’t have to term everyone stupid, we can try and understand why and help. Might not be your style, but it is mine. Also I call people out for dumb opinions plenty of times on MN! But I pick and choose.

They were designed for the visually impaired, yes.

They can also used by anybody who struggles to read, such as people whose first language isn't English, people with cognitive disabilities, and people who are illiterate.

My god indeed 😂

I know it can be used by anyone. But it’s not remotely designed for illiteracy. Other apps are. That was my point. My god indeed.

Why does it matter who it was originally designed for, if it is now also used as an aid that helps illiterate people to vote?

And it's not an app by the way, it's a physical piece of equipment.

My point remains: under my suggestion of having to pass a quiz for one's vote to be counted, a McGonagle reader would ensure that illiteracy was not a barrier.

Again, my god 🤣🤣🤣

Ok you’re trying to draw me out on something. Just say it. I have a long day tomorrow. You never say what you mean. It’s not funny when you think you’re being sharp. Scattering my aunt.

Gengha · 03/10/2026 20:55

Is this your first day on earth OP?

Wow! This was one of the topics I had to study for the British Citizenship exam. I’m shocked that someone who has been born and bred in this country is not well versed in the way your parliamentary democracy works

Slightly at a tangent, but I rather suspect that most of us wouldn't get all the questions on the citizenship test because we've never had to.
