How much would you give a niece for her 18th birthday?

How much money would you give to your niece for her 18th.

If it makes any difference:

  • she's the eldest sibling by 9 years, so loads of time to save up for the others.
  • Isn't going to university, unsure of plans after college beyond "not uni".
  • Has had some emotional and social difficulties in her teen years.
  • Quite close relationship.
  • doesn't want a specific gift, is looking for contributions towards a car and insurance
  • her parents aren't well off enough to buy her a car in full.

I was thinking £500 would be reasonable. I should be able to save that for the others by the time they reach 18. I could give more but probably wouldn't be able to match it for the others.

Is that reasonable?

£50 is fine

I gave £30 for my nieces/nephews and my siblings gave similar-we have all paid our mortgages off and have savings but are supporting our own children though university which is expensive.

If you don’t own your house and have credit card debt, I’d not be spending £500, but it is obviously up to you.

We do £10 each for normal birthdays, so maybe £20 for an 18th birthday. We do have 4 DNs to buy for though.

@Noddyslittleredcar I completely disagree with the majority of the people on here. £500 seems very reasonable to me for an 18th birthday! So if you can afford it I would.

edited to say: I do about £50 per person as rule for “normal” presents and more for my parents and my DH parents.

I would definitely not see it as excessive. I would think you were being generous and kind.

I gave my nephew £250 last year for his 18th and will do the same for the other two. It’s a special birthday, easily affordable for us and I wanted to mark the occasion. He was incredibly touched.

RedFatball · 29/09/2026 19:27

I would have done £100 I think. 18 is a big milestone and if it won't cause you hardship, that would be a lovely thing to do

I gave my niece and nephew £100 each, they were very pleased with that.
My godchildren £50 each, have more of them!

Ophy83 · 29/09/2026 19:55

If you can afford it that would be lovely. My grandma gave me £1,000 for my 16th. I remember being frozen in shock opening the cheque as it was so unexpected! It was really appreciated, I saved it for a year then bought a little Fiat Uno when I turned 17.

I'd do £180 because it seems deliberate and may e something to go with it, a bottle of champagne if she drinks or perfume if not, so you'll end up spending around £250
I would be careful not to overshadow her parents

ETA
I have 2 nieces and usually do 40-50 for birthdays but they are still young 7 and 11

We only have credit card debt because we get more interest on the savings than paid on the transfer fee.

And £500 is neither here nor there on the mortgage. It'll be paid off before we're 50 regardless (just as our kids are off to uni thankfully).

I got £20 or a bottle of Prosecco off my aunties when I turned 18 😂
