How much would you give a niece for her 18th birthday?

How much money would you give to your niece for her 18th.

If it makes any difference:

  • she's the eldest sibling by 9 years, so loads of time to save up for the others.
  • Isn't going to university, unsure of plans after college beyond "not uni".
  • Has had some emotional and social difficulties in her teen years.
  • Quite close relationship.
  • doesn't want a specific gift, is looking for contributions towards a car and insurance
  • her parents aren't well off enough to buy her a car in full.

I was thinking £500 would be reasonable. I should be able to save that for the others by the time they reach 18. I could give more but probably wouldn't be able to match it for the others.

Is that reasonable?

I do £10-£15 for 12 and under, £20 for teen years, £50 for 18 and 21 and it’s cards only over 18 (apart from 21st). £500 seems a huge amount but it obviously depends on your finances and the number of nieces/nephews that you have.

Rubyupbeat · 29/09/2026 15:19

Definitely 500 if you can afford it and to give the others the same. I did the same, we are very, very close and they are lovely kids, well adults.

MyManinCaracas · 29/09/2026 15:23

I gave mine a pair of earrings and £200. We are very close and she’s a great kid.

How much are her parents spending on her? I wouldn't aim to over shadow them.

No idea. I expect they'll make up the shortfall on a car and insurance.

I gave my niece a gift worth £50 (can't give cash as her mum would take it) for her 18th, I'd usually spend about £20. Stopped giving birthday gifts at 18 but am saving to give her £150 for her 21st.

I would give £500.00. You don't have to give the others the same, either.

helpfulperson · 29/09/2026 15:57

I've given £250 to mine in recent years.

YourAmberExpert · 29/09/2026 16:00

£50-100

pinkspeakers · 29/09/2026 16:18

We didn't do special gifts for nieces and nephews for 18th, and neither did our children's aunties. We just spent the usual amount of about £30 or so (and it was the last present). If you want to do much more than obviously that's entirely up to you, but I'd suggest that if it is something you need to "save up" for then it is probably too much. You would want to be fair across other nieces and nephews.

Save up for is probably the wrong wording. I tend to set my savings aside in pots, so I'd just be allocating the right amount to the pot.

I have given all of my and DH's nieces and nephews £100 for 18th but I have also given them money for exam grades when they leave school college and again when they get their degree. I also paid £50 a month for 2 nieces all the way through both their degree courses as their parents didn't earn a lot. I've also helped out a nephew when he was very ill and couldn't work and his car failed it's MOT. I think if you can afford it and you know their parents might not be able to afford to give them too much it's a lovely thing to do. My 2 Aunties were always incredibly generous to me and my sisters as neither had DC of their own so I've always tried to be generous with my own niece's and nephews.

Favouritefruits · 29/09/2026 16:49

It’s my nieces 18th birthday soon I plan on £50 and I thought that was generous! £500 blimey, it’s lovely you can do that for her. Make sure you can do it for all nieces and nephews to avoid favouritism.

Morecoffeeneedef · 29/09/2026 16:50

I've just given mine £120 and it was gratefully received.

BobbiBiscuits · 29/09/2026 16:50

100 is more than enough

Boreded · 29/09/2026 16:51

Noddyslittleredcar · 29/09/2026 14:26

No, but I also don't want to appear excessive to my family. We are financially better off than most of them so don't want to come across as either excessive or stingy!

Why don’t you ask her mum if there is anything special she would want. A nice watch or something so that you can spend lots but not be throwing a pile of cash at her.

FWIW I wouldn’t worry whether people think you are being flash. We all care way too much about what other people think about our spending. It shouldn’t be so taboo

I think this is a very relevant question.
Op should check in with nieces parents about gift plans.

CherryPieToday · 29/09/2026 16:57

I give £10 per year, so aged 1 £10, aged 5 £50, and so on. So for 18, £180.

Keepingtimer · 29/09/2026 16:58

£50

BaronessBomburst · 29/09/2026 17:18

My niece is turning 18 this month and I'm planning on giving £180.

Barleymoat · 29/09/2026 17:26

My daughter's grandparents could only bring themselves to send a card for her 18th, nothing more, yet took one of their other GC to Australia just for an ordinary holiday. 😞

Your niece is incredibly lucky and I hope she knows that and appreciates you ❤️

Good god OP - give what you want to! Don’t be swayed by random strangers on the internet - if you feel £500 feels right then do that

you do not need the permission or approval of people here

Then why ask?

DaysThatEnd · 29/09/2026 17:47

We give our nieces and nephews £500 for 18th and 21st.

On the less big birthdays, we give them £50. For passing driving tests/exams/graduation we give them £100/£200.

I wouldn’t be talked out of it by people here when these threads often seem to attract those that begrudge young people getting anything.

No, she doesn't. I don't think that aunts and uncles need to be as even handed as parents and grandparents.
