What is your favourite UK Cathedral (or Minster/Abbey)?

The companion thread to my “favourite castles”thread!
Which is your favourite UK cathedral?
I love side chapels, bell towers, stained glass, cloisters, burial places, flying buttresses, crypts, interesting history… all the classic stuff!

I’ve particularly enjoyed Lincoln, York Minster, Winchester, Wells and Salisbury in recent years.
I used to live in Worcester, and enjoyed popping in there after a bit of shopping, too.

Please recommend your favourites! Thanks!

I rather liked Guildford despite it being relatively modern.

Bath Abbey and Winchester Cathedral are my favourites.

BestIsWest · 28/09/2026 22:45

I’m very fond of Hereford.

MrsMoastyToasty · 28/09/2026 22:49

Bristol Cathedral.

It's the only one I've spent time in. My old school holds a service there every year.

Coventry! Have never felt so moved by a space before.
And it’s Britain’s most dog-friendly cathedral.

Ely - watched the National Youth Choir sing Tu Es Petrus in there and it was absolutely monumental.

York - because I can see it from my house, it’s like an old friends.

St Magnus, Kirkwall

Came to say the same.

York £20 per person entrance fee is a bit steep.

Durham! Especially the view of it from the train.

Agreed

JustAnotherWhinger · 28/09/2026 23:48

Norwich, Durham and Glasgow are my favourites.

I like the contrast with the ruined cathedral and the new one side-by-side in Coventry. I think the new one could have been much nicer though.

SmallTreeDeepRoots · 28/09/2026 23:56

I have a soft spot for Lichfield. Especially the weird little hidden chapel up a tiny staircase. And St Chad.

But a few years ago we got lucky with a tour of Winchester with exactly the right person and it was absolutely riveting. What history, what art, what tales!

WhatDoRacoonsSay · 29/09/2026 00:00

Durham, its absolutely stunning.

Breezy1985 · 29/09/2026 00:04

Lincoln ❤

Nourishinghandcream · 29/09/2026 00:12

Tewkesbury.
Mainly because it is relatively close but also because it is just lovely.
Even Ddogs seem to feel the sense of prayer and are silent for the entire time we are in there (dogs welcome).
Love the carol service.❤️

York and Wells and Coventry Cathedral Ruins. (Where they perform at the end of the film Nativity)

Baldrapunzel · 29/09/2026 00:21

Durham - some lovely glass, Saint Cuthbert's shrine, the miner's memorial. The close with the Castle and the cathedral's position on it's promontory above the Wear.

LadyWiddiothethird · 29/09/2026 00:21

Where I live…..Lichfield.

Greenandyellowday · 29/09/2026 01:29

Gloucester, for the jewel-like windows in the little side-chapels, and the cloisters.
Lincoln
Saint David's
Salisbury
Litchfield
Wells

Clifton Cathedral is stunning.

shiningcuckoo · 29/09/2026 03:51

Beverley Minster.

fredflintthethird · 29/09/2026 03:52

Liverpool Catholic cathedral

TheAnnoyingSatsuma · 29/09/2026 04:44

Has no one mentioned Carlisle? A small but perfect gem. The east window surpasses even York Minster.

Absolutely !
I went to a carol service there once. It was amazing.
