The companion thread to my “favourite castles”thread!
Which is your favourite UK cathedral?
I love side chapels, bell towers, stained glass, cloisters, burial places, flying buttresses, crypts, interesting history… all the classic stuff!

I’ve particularly enjoyed Lincoln, York Minster, Winchester, Wells and Salisbury in recent years.
I used to live in Worcester, and enjoyed popping in there after a bit of shopping, too.

Please recommend your favourites! Thanks!

St Alban's is my favourite to date. It's huge, beautiful and has all sorts of interesting historical features from the people who lived and worked there over the centuries. The graffiti is always so evocative of bored young monks getting up to mischief.

Great post OP, love a good cathedral etc. Wimborne Minster was my local one thoroughly recommend and Sherbone Abbey is a must too.Salisbury is my favourite, another that was local to me, Durham and Dunblane also great , I could go on, Liverpool metropolitan and Gloucester also amazing. ( realising i have been to quite a few lol

I was mesmerised by Dornoch, it’s small but perfect isn’t it, and has incredible light. I’ve also visited St Magnus but it was over 20 years ago - need another trip!

That sounds wonderful!

We were in Southwell at the weekend - never been before, in fact didn't really know it was there. The Minster is amazing with some truly wonderful modern glass. Well worth a visit.

AlwaysExtraHot · 07/10/2026 11:48

I loved Southwell too. Had no idea until last year that it was there, despite having grown up quite nearby and still having family fairly nearby!
It is a gem. The herb garden is lovely too.

Which one?

I do love living in Liverpool as well have 2 amazing cathedrals, and they are both so different. My great grandmother was there was the laying of the foundation stone of the Anglican cathedral.

Edited

I love both of them - I remember the Anglican cathedral being finished - I’ve sung in it

So glad to see the love for Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral. It has a very special place in my heart. Sad Coventry doesn’t really get a look in though!

InQuiresandplaceswheretheysing · 07/10/2026 12:27

@MeetMeOnTheCornermy dad is a huge admirer of Thomas Denny’s work. Im
mot a fan at all. But his windows at Hereford are lovely.

You weren't wrong.
We whispered near it. Does that count?

It's an awesome cathedral. I prefer it to Paddy's wigwam.

Ah, great to know that I could win at Top Trumps Cathedrals! It’s so beautiful. The gardens and the natural spring are magnificent also.

Yes, we walked round there on the hottest day last summer. At 8 in the evening it was still 29 degrees.

gravitarse · 07/10/2026 20:35

Oh come on
either Liverpool metro or Salisbury. Done

gravitarse · 07/10/2026 20:36

I wouldn't say "paddy" these days

gravitarse · 07/10/2026 20:36

It's all about the SPIRE.
so Salisbury wins.

Empra123 · 07/10/2026 20:39

I worshipped at Durham cathedral when I was a student there and loved it.

And a good word for Chichester cathedral where my daughter works

gravitarse · 07/10/2026 20:39

Nooo. Chichester is crap

Globules · 07/10/2026 20:54

I fell in love with Gloucester cathedral this summer. Such beautiful artwork and stained glass.

I couldn't get enough of St Albans when i was with my ex. There was always something new to see. "A last supper" always held my gaze. The christmas services were beautiful and I had free prosecco at the Easter Sunday service!

Lincoln is stunning. A real treat for the eyes.

But my favourite has to be the baptistry window and west screen in Cov Cathedral. So evocative.

Piglet89 · 07/10/2026 20:54

St Paul’s.

Well, I’ll be danged! I never knew that. Yes, you are right, I’ve just searched it. It is the most beautiful building with an eclectic archive and an absolutely stunning art collection. It’s not on the beaten path so it’s never too busy. Also, the cafe is rather fine. I just remember sitting my finals exams here. On Saturday mornings!

I sat my finals there too! My DS2 current doing his masters at ‘uni of’ as students call
it to distinguish from JM etc
i graduated in paddy’s wigwam

I graduated in the Philharmonic Hall. I knew I wasn’t making it up about sitting finals in there. But I think that finals were so stressful and in the haze of time, memory wanes. It’s just that I took my two children to Liverpool and we visited the museum and I had a visceral memory. There is actually a photo in the museum of a cohort sitting their exams in the great hall of the building. We were so lucky!

So is DD. She will graduate in the metropololitan cathedral.

We went to the Victoria museum as well @ThePieceHall (do you live in Halifax?). I was saying to DH that the building style reminded me of the Natural History museum. The building itself is as interesting as what is inside. Some of the older university buildings are lovely.
