Has anyone else completely lost the desire to go on holiday?

When I was young I travelled a lot. First with my parents, then as a young adult. I travelled far and wide, to the USA in one direction and the far east in the other. I loved it and lots of places inbetween. After I met and married DH and had kids we settled into the Mediterranean style 2 weeks in the sun style holidays and breaks in the U.K.

we're now in our 60s, been retired for some years and just gone completely off holidaying, home or abroad. We think about the hassle at airports, the crowds in the cities at both home and abroad. The rain and general bad weather in the U.K.

We are away right now in England and it rained a lot of the day yesterday so we only went out for a couple of hours, did a museum and a cafe at a seaside resort, returned to our lodge and just sat and read. It was quite boring. Infact we are returning home today, a day earlier than planned.

Discussing it last night we realised we’ve both lost the desire to holiday, we miss having our stuff around us particularly as all our hobbies are quite creative. ( can’t exactly take a piano on holiday)

Have others reached this point where they just have no desire to holiday any more. Am I abnormal? Just curious if others have come to this conclusion or have opinions on this?

I thought it was just me! I work with a team of 4 people who all accuse me of not having a "proper" holiday because I don't go abroad and am only away from home for half of my leave. We prefer short breaks in the UK - DH has some health issues and travel insurance is getting expensive for any overseas trip. We live in the midlands so most of the UK is easily accessible and I'm happy with how we choose to holiday.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 28/09/2026 09:40

@Junglejune That’s exactly us. I can always find something to see and do! I don’t mind travel - other than long delays at passport control!

TheeNotoriousPIG · 28/09/2026 09:41

I never got the travel bug. As an adult, I have been on holiday twice... because they were places in the UK that I wanted to go to, i.e. not busy, a bit more remote, something a bit different, and slightly more organised, because I'm not very good at relaxing on holidays.

I like having things to look forward to, but I have no desire to travel far and wide. I'd rather put my money towards making my house a lovely place to be, rather than spending thousands on a holiday for a fortnight.

feellikeanalien · 28/09/2026 09:42

I'm the opposite . I spend quite a bit of time fantasy holiday planning, both in the UK and abroad. For various reasons I can't really go away at the moment but love it when I do.

DD and I have had lovely holidays in the highlands of Scotland over the past few years. The scenery is amazing and we've had some lovely seafood and met lots of interesting people. We're not really lying.on the beach kind of people so the weather doesn't really stop us. Skye in the mist and rain was still beautiful.

I just love the lochs and mountains and the most incredible beaches on the Hebrides.

Horses for courses I suppose but if I could travel more I definitely would.

Onlythisnamewasavailable · 28/09/2026 09:44

If you don't enjoy it don't go.

I can't relate to this at all though. I love traveling. I am away about 70 nights a year and would go more if I could. I look forward to traveling more in retirement.

Currently on holiday in the UK, and yes it's rained a bit at times, but I am walking 10-15 miles a day in fair weather, and sitting on beaches in shorts and t shirt.

For me, I feel so alive when traveling! Yet so at peace and relaxed. I just admire the beauty of the world, and what a wonderful planet we live on. I like meeting random people from all sorts of places and chatting to them. Learning about how they live their lives. We can learn so much through travel.

When I was working I couldn't wait to go away on holiday - as many as possible. Have been retired for a few years now and don't feel the need to escape the rat race. Pottering around at home is bliss.

SoBoredOfSelfDoubtHowToGetOut · 28/09/2026 09:45

Weekend city breaks in EU are plenty for me.

OsfameronTanamoril · 28/09/2026 09:47

I am in the Isle of Wight right now. Absolutely gorgeous. Mostly fine, tiny bit of rain. UK holidays can be great. We are not beach people, so have been hiking and walking.
Will never stop travelling, I hope.

Ophy83 · 28/09/2026 09:48

I'm not keen on airports but love a train journey, particularly if going first class. Going by train also generally means you are taken straight to the city centre. London-Edinburgh is one of my favourite journeys once you get north of York as the route along the northumbrian coast is stunning.

ihavefourgrandchildren · 28/09/2026 09:51

We’re in our late 60s and I definitely get where you’re coming from. This has just crept up on me this year, we went for a week in the uk in June, and I couldn’t wait to get home.
The trouble I’ve got is DH still likes to go away and is wanting to go somewhere at the minute , just for a few nights but now the mornings and evenings are cold I’d rather be at home.

thebirdswhocannotsing · 28/09/2026 09:51

The issue is holidaying in the UK. If you let your world close around you it’ll be a miserable existence

PersephoneParlormaid · 28/09/2026 08:07

I’ve no desire to holiday in this country, the places I’ve stayed in the past haven’t been the greatest, despite costing plenty. And one time in Wales we also came home early.
I prefer cruises now, getting on at Southampton is a breeze and I deliberately choose smaller ships.

Me too! I have two booked for next year and now looking at 2028 🤣 I love my suitcase going on the coach then appearing in my cabin ! No scrum at all inclusive resorts, just a 5 course dinner every night in the fabulous restaurants and being transported to wonderful places

OriginalPeanut · 28/09/2026 09:55

My coeliac diagnosis seriously curtailed my enjoyment of holidays. Such a drag to have to research to the nth degree to find safe places to eat.

BeethovenNinth · 28/09/2026 09:58

I love going away. I love seeing new places but not particularly Rome or Paris. I’m as happy exploring a little village in the uk- I like looking at how other people live. Walks. Maybe the inside of a church. There is always some local history.

my family doesn’t like holidays as much which annoys me. But each to their own! If you love being home then that sounds fabulous as you can make your house your own little heavenly place

Ohnobackagain · 28/09/2026 09:58

off topic, but great user name @JurgenKloppsTeeth 🫣😂

MrsBatshitRatshit · 28/09/2026 09:58

No, I love travelling and seeing new places. If the day ever comes when I don't, I will know I am officially old.

biedrona · 28/09/2026 09:58

For me travelling has not been the same since Covid. It is just not as spontenous and fun. Airport delays, logistics of organising with friends, dog care. Unless it is somewhere I really want to go, I just rather stay at home!

zoeslim · 28/09/2026 10:00

Cant be bothered
Too much on line hassle
Being ripped off for being a tourist
Pain in the a---e
I also laugh at people who have kids or who are young who fly all over the place when global warming is going to make young peoples life a misery

Dappy777 · 28/09/2026 10:04

Everything now feels like a hassle. I don't even go shopping at normal times. Instead, I get up six so I'm home before the traffic makes it all unbearable. There are just too many people, simple as that. Driving alone is so stressful it makes me ill.

The countryside is being ruined by endless house building, and no matter where you go you can hear the drone of cars in the distance. I went to a local beauty spot in spring and couldn't get parked. Then, when we did manage to find an isolated spot, instead of bird song all we could hear was the screeching and backfiring of some idiot boy racer.

Continental Europe has changed a lot as well. I went to Barcelona when I was 16 (back in the 1990s) and loved it. But there is a nasty vibe now and, like a lot of European cities, it doesn't really feel European any more.

On top of that, summers are now boiling hot. No, I wouldn't be bothered if I never went on holiday again. Too much traffic, too many houses, too much noise, too much heat.

I’m the opposite! The only way I can manage living in this grey depressing country is by managing to leave it a few times a year!

And I’m guessing all the jet 2 northerners I heard chatting in Majorca 10 days ago and on their 3rd or 4th holiday of the year (so much for the cost of living) think similar too, if you can afford 4 sun filled 10 day holidays as a family/couple , don’t bang on about cost of living, thank your good fortune - to be honest I am not interested in UK holidays- I live in one of the nicer bits and end up thinking - woukd rather be at home. I have tried to book for Scotland a few times for 4 or 5 days as have fond memories of it as a kid and each time I give up- ludicrously expensive for anything of really good quality anywhere that I would fancy and more awkward for us to get to or huge drives than many places just as nice in Europe. Went to Sweden instead - similar prices, lakes and woods and great hotels with saunas etc and far more affordable - I find Europe covers me off at 64 for most things , ( sun, snow, scenery, food, culture) with a US trip every 4 or 5 years added in - I like a change of scenery, food , vibe and to hear lots of languages- a cottage in Yorkshire with not much around me and a big chance of 3 days of drizzle doesn’t work for me - London weekends though I always enjoy !! We don’t have kids at home though so that makes a difference as don’t have to factor in paying for 4 or school holidays etc

KeeepWalking · 28/09/2026 14:05

We're mid/late 50s and early retired (redundancy and mental health reasons) a few months ago. I did think we'd be travelling and holidaying loads for a few years, but instead we find that we only really want to travel in the UK and ROI. We have a campervan, so we have all our own 'stuff' going with us. I have no desire to fly anywhere.

Livingthebestlife · 28/09/2026 14:32

I guess that's what makes the world go round, we all have different likes and I think it's important to do the things that make you happy.

We normally have one holiday a year, long haul, it really gives me a boost and I feel such happiness inside when I'm away, I absolutely love the sun, not much sun where I live so going to hot countries really makes us all so happy, my adult children come too as they love it as well.

From reading here people having a couple if not more holidays I thought feck it, so booked to go away in a few weeks and I'm hoping DH loves it so much that he'll consider going for Christmas 😂 it really gives me something to look forward to and I don't mind airports or packing etc.

We're by no means rich but when I see what we pay out here for a couple nights in a hotel and the weather where I am is just so bad and depressing or even just going out as a family for food and drinks it adds up and I do be thinking we could stick a few more quid towards it and have a little holiday. 😁

grinandslothit · 28/09/2026 14:37

Also retired and not traveling not even going outside that much really.
I think I've been recovering from such burnout. I spent lockdown in Melbourne Australia and that broke something in me causing agoraphobia for a while.

In my mind I like the idea of going places and seeing something new but dealing with airports, getting to and from the airport, all the faffing around just to get somewhere is off-putting to me right now

Pls tell us more about the Vietnam trip! It sounds fabulous 👌

I went with Exodus from HCMC (Saigon) to Hanoi with a couple of days at each end. Fantastic trip… DM me if you want more. Don’t want to derail thread. X

Badbadbunny · 28/09/2026 14:42

Nope, not lost the desire at all. Unfortunately my DH has a serious life limiting condition and is immuno-compromised, so we've not been abroad since 2019, as we just can't risk the crowding at airports and being sat in a plane in close proximity with hundreds of people for hours. We're resigned to never going abroad again, but we're not happy about it.

We're just grateful and thankful we did so much travelling in our 20s and 30s, totalling around 40 countries, from Egyptian pyramids to Great Wall of China to Niagra Falls to Las Vegas.

If there was any way of restoring my DH's immune system, we'd fly tomorrow!
