Hatty65 · 26/09/2026 19:39

Born on the other side of the world.

Ineedanewsofa · 26/09/2026 19:41

Adopted

ThirdStorm · 26/09/2026 19:42

Not born, been here longer than where I was born now. Time flies.

TheBigFatMermaid · 26/09/2026 19:43

I'm 59, have lived in this town for 27 years but I've been so well adopted, I once got invited to the school reunion, even though I didn't go to school round here!

Halfblindbunny · 26/09/2026 19:45

Not born but lived here longer than where I was born. I don't think this city will adopt me though as unless you have several generations of history here you are an outsider.

persikmeow · 26/09/2026 19:46

I like to think I invaded it…

ifonly4 · 26/09/2026 19:50

Not born, but moved here when I was eight months.

MickyFinnegan · 26/09/2026 19:52

Adopted. Never thought I'd leave my hometown though but it was London so sometimes it has to be done

AllJoyAndNoFun · 26/09/2026 19:55

Adopted. DH is from here. I’m from about 100 miles away. I tell him I’m the real local as I don’t have to use sat nav to get to B&Q and he does 😂

ToadRage · 26/09/2026 20:01

I was born in Dorset and lived there til i went to Secondary school. We moved because there wasn't a bus from our town to my brothers school and he really didn't want to board. I lived there till I was 23 with a brief stint in Devon at uni. I now live in Coventry but I don't particularly feel adopted by it. What does it mean to be adopted by a place?

ACatInHellsChance · 26/09/2026 20:02

Not born, but I moved here as a toddler so it's all I remember.

SweatyGibbon · 26/09/2026 20:02

Born in a nearby town, so I'll say born.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 26/09/2026 20:06

Born. Lived here or in a small, adjacent town my whole life except one uni year. Couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. DH grew up in Kent and moved here.

Brendayouknowthatyouremuchtoolazy · 26/09/2026 20:06

Not my home by birth but by choice. Been here over half my life. Left the countryside as soon as I could, would hate to return.

myjamisbetterthanyours · 26/09/2026 20:11

I was born on a ship.

Nodirectionhome · 26/09/2026 20:17

I was born close to central Manchester. Stayed there 25 years and have lived in two of its satellite towns for the last 41 years.

TheoreticallyAdult · 26/09/2026 20:20

Born but I’ve lived out of the city for a decade. Back two years now and I won’t ever leave it again.

autumnalannie · 26/09/2026 20:23

i think I’ve only been back to the city I was born in once, and my first town I last visited when I was about 5. I don’t have that sense of “home”

DilemmaDelilah · 27/09/2026 08:43

Born in Plymouth. Moved to Singapore. Came back to Devon (different place). School in Surrey. Moved to Australia. Back to Devon. University in Bristol. Back to Devon.

Moved around a bit, but mostly the same area in Devon. It's where I consider home to be.

TruffleSlinky · 27/09/2026 08:46

Lived in my town of birth until I was 33, then moved here.

QuirkyHorse · 27/09/2026 08:49

Born - 13 years
Next place - 16 years
Current place - 29 years - I belong here.

gingercat02 · 27/09/2026 09:15

Born 18y
Uni 3y
Here 5y
Other places 5y
Here 22y

Here is home the 5y away was a job necessity we always planned to come back. I adopted it not the other way.

reluctantbrit · 27/09/2026 09:15

What does adopted mean to you?

I was born in a different country, moved to the town I actually grew up when I was 2 years and lived there for 22 years. That's what I call my hometown.

I now live in a part of London for 16 years. I like it here and enjoy it but I could pack my bags and move somewhere else if moving and buying a house wouldn't be so bloody expensive and stressful.

I think "adopted" means for me I embrace the town, have a local, know everyone by their first name and are greeted when going out. But maybe that's just because it's suburban London that this is not what I experience - and I don't think I need it anyway.
