Never had a manicure...is this unusual?

Late 30s woman living in UK. Just reading an article about "bare nails".

I've never had my nails done professionally or had a manicure. When I was much younger I would attempt nail varnish at home and it would usually look rubbish. I think in my 20s, I didn't feel like I had enough money for it (although I had a professional job and didn't really know the cost). Then at some point I considered it but felt overwhelmed with all the options and not knowing what to ask for, so never went. Is this a common experience?

I have recently started having paraffin manicures, no polish, about twice a year as I am not very good dealing with my cuticles. Not into this gel and nail art crap. What a waste of time and money.

And what is a paraffin manicure??

Having your nails done has nothing to do with looking smart.

It definitely does . If they are short and well cared for with no dry cuticles and a clear varnish or polish it can look very smart. If someone dresses smart but nails are different lengths, dry cuticles, ridges, irregular ends it can ruin a look and just looks scruffy . What do u think ? U dont need a professional manicure for it to look good but a manicure nonetheless is needed

I’m nearly 50 and have never had one either, it doesn’t appeal to me. I don’t like the look or feel of long, painted nails so I just keep mine short and clean. I don’t have facials either- had one once which someone bought me as a gift. I didn’t enjoy it and couldn’t wait for it to be over 🥴 I don’t mind a couple of hours in a spa but just for the sauna and steam room and loafing about in a warm room. But I don’t want ‘treatments’ and would get bored and restless if I had to spend any longer than two hours there.

No. I use a glass nail fail and apply oils or nourishing creams a few times a day and occasional exfoliation. This means I never have overgrown, raggy cuticles (whereas some regularly manicured hands frequently reveal these), and peeling and breaking is minimal. I rarely use polish.

So I don't just not bother. I simply dislike fake nails, and even without these, manicuring weakens and damages mine through overbuffing. I would rather look after my own.

Do love a spa day, though!

Gall10 · 26/09/2026 12:37

Nope…no manicure, no eyebrow waxing, never trimmed my bush and the thought of a spa day gives me a panic attack.

Tickingcrocodile · 26/09/2026 12:37

Me neither, nearly 50. I just prefer to spend my money on other things. I have a mobile hairdersser who comes a couple of times a year. Went to a day spa once for someone's birthday but wasn't really my thing. I don't think anyone looks at my hands in horror but maybe they do!

What a load of nonsense 😂

You can just use hand cream and cut your nails at home. Or do you think men all look scruffy because they don't get manicures?

Dontcallmescarface · 26/09/2026 12:48

I'm 60 and have never had my nails done or done them myself.

Rollergirl79 · 26/09/2026 12:48

Im 41 and I've never had my nails done. Really can't be bothered!

And what is a paraffin manicure??

A deep moisturising treatment where your hands are dipped into warm wax.

I've had fewer than 10 manicures in my life and I'm early 50s. Acrylic, gel and BIAB all require upkeep and I don't like them on me. I find they damage my nails. I absolutely hate the dry filing off of cuticles with an electric file - it's to stop introducing moisture with gel polishes that needs curing, but I've had this make my cuticles bleed and cause a groove in my nails. Revolting. The UV curing of polishes, etc isn't good for you either.

I had a naked manicure recently where my nails were shaped, cuticles sorted out without an electric file, and the nails buffed. I was really impressed with the result. Pedicures I quite like, but I won't have cured, gel polish.

Me neither, nor a pedicure, facial or ‘spa day’, none of these appeal at all. Rarely go to the hairdresser either,

Im the same - Ive never had any of these and I haven’t been to a hairdresser for well over 20 years.

FruAashild · 26/09/2026 12:54

I had a french manicure for my wedding 25 years ago. I'm a scientist so working in the lab I kept my nails very short so grew them for 2 weeks so they could be painted and the beautician said she'd never seen such short nails! I have brachydactyly ('murder's thumbs') so some of my nails are shorter and wider than normal. I have sometimes buffed my nails at home which is a much nicer look than bright gels IMHO. I'm very minimal generally, I don't wear makeup or dye my hair.

Was just about to type exactly this.
No man in the world has ever felt the need to start having manicures and wearing nail polish as part of needing to look smart at work.

mugglewump · 26/09/2026 12:59

I read the same article on bare nails and thought yippee! I've never had my nails done. When I was younger, I occasionally used nail polish at home, but I hated the feel of it and it made taking out contact lenses much harder. I still paint my toe nails, but never my fingers.

I’ve had none of those either.
I was given a voucher for a manicure for my birthday a few years ago and it went unused.

I do my own nails, I keep them short and wear a pale pink nail polish.

I couldn’t agree more. The idea of a spa day makes me shudder. Complete waste of time & money. I’d rather go to Sainsbury’s, at least I can buy nice wine there.

Deadringer · 26/09/2026 13:13

I had one once because I got a voucher, the polish was coming off after a couple of days so I never bothered again.

backformoreofthesame · 26/09/2026 13:14

Can’t see the point

never had manicure , pedicure, facial and probably lots of other things I don’t know the name of

always better things to spend my time and money on and there is nothing wrong with me as I am

Mercurial1 · 26/09/2026 13:14

I love the idea that someone decides that natural and clean isn’t smart and then invents activities for people to do, and things for people to buy, to overcome this perceived weakness

GentleSheep · 26/09/2026 13:16

No I've never had one either.

Deadringer · 26/09/2026 13:18

I just remembered, the manicurist told me i had lovely shaped nails and asked me how i trimmed them, I told her I used a clippers, and she said 'you use a clippers? Like a man?' Such a weird thing to say I still remember it 20 years later.

fmlnotagain · 26/09/2026 13:20

My mum used to be like this and she’s 64 but I’d say since she turned 60 and having adult granddaughters to help her navigate what to ask for she’s changed a lot she now has botox, gets her nails done regularly and have eyebrow waxes. She’s not taken to kindly to aging but she looks great!

Cushionseams · 26/09/2026 13:22

Never had a manicure, and these days tend to just cut them short but used to do my own. Always found it really relaxing.
