Is it advisable to view a body several weeks after death?

Dhs step mum died around 2.5 weks ago. His dad said the body won't be ready to view until three weeks has passed. By the time the funeral happens it will be five weeks post death. Dh wants to see the body. I have told him to ask the funeral directors if this is good idea. To me, it seems to long since death as other relatives he has seen have been much sooner after death. However his cousin was viewed around 3-4 weeks and I was told they just looked exactly the same but asleep.

I’ve seen a couple of grandparents and I wish I hadn’t. I won’t be viewing my parents, and I hope people don’t want to view me like that. Just remember me as I was.

It was 3 weeks after my mum and the funeral director was very kind but said, ‘I wouldn’t advise it’. I’d definitely be guided by the FD.

I saw my beautiful dad 3 weeks after he passed. He wasn't embalmed and he looked better than he did towards the end of his life(bastard cancer). He even had a little smile on his face. I'd go with what the funeral directors advise. They will be honest. Your partner might end up resenting you if you try and stop him viewing xx

This was my experience ❤️

My dad looked awful when he died, I'll never forget the last few days before he died (cancer) When we saw him at the FD three weeks after he'd died, he looked lovely. So mum so that I expected him to get up as he just looked like he was asleep in his favourite shirt.

I know a funeral director. If a funeral is more than 3 weeks after death they recommend embalming as the body changes so much

Personally unless it’s just after death I would not be going

I saw my daughter before the funeral 4 weeks post death and they had done a really decent job in the funeral home with the makeup .She just looked like she had aged 20 years.

It's really up to him OP.

You have to seek advice from the funeral director. They will tell you truthfully. With my partner it had been four weeks whilst his body was still at hospital. The FD advised no viewing dur to 'skin slippage.' We sat with his closed casket instead.

It seems that he has been advised that she may not look the best, so I would leave the ball in his court. It's a very personal thing to do and everyone is different. He might hold it against you!

If he’s set on going then it’s his decision. He might regret it if he doesn’t. She will be in cold storage so shouldn’t look to different to when she passed away.
I didn’t like seeing my dad but I would have regretted it if I hadn’t. There’s no best option unfortunately.
