How often do you hoover your stair?

For 20+ years I had a plain stair carpet that I hoovered twice a week because it always looked like it needed it.

I now have a flecked carpet and I've realised that since I bought in in April I've only hoovered it three times becuase it never "looks" like it needs doing to remind me.

2 or 3 times a week, the cats like to track cat litter up the stairs.

Everyday, navy thick pile carpet and two cats, one of which is mostly white. Wasn't my best decision. Going to replace it before Christmas with a more neutral tight carpet.

Once a week.

Every two days if not daily. We have cats and three kids though.

caringcarer · 24/09/2026 15:50

Once a week. I have 2 cats.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/09/2026 16:07

A lot less often than when we had a dog and a cat.*
Dh has taken to doing it when his French conversation group meets here - they don’t go upstairs so not sure why, but I have no objection!

*I used to go over the stairs with a damp cloth to collect up all the dog/cat hair pre hoovering.

Once a month maybe. I pick up anything obvious like bits of fluff etc almost every day when I go up and down then. It’s my most hated job. We have a cat and 2 adult dc and a very busy house, I just can’t be bothered to do it more than that.

scrivette · 24/09/2026 16:14

When it looks really bad (and I try to convince DC to do it) Maybe once a month.

BluebellBeth · 24/09/2026 16:21

No where near as often as I should as I hate hoovering the stairs, but always admire how lovely they look when I do.

AlwaysPurple · 24/09/2026 16:24

When my parents are coming to visit.

StabiaGirl · 24/09/2026 16:48

a. Your stairs deserve vacuuming. Here we are two adults, no outdoor shoes and no pets. Twice a week the clear vacuum canister goes from almost empty having vacuumed the rest of the house to half full after vacuuming the stairs.
b. Use a cordless vacuum and it's much less of a chore. The Bosch one has batteries that are interchangeable with the other Bosch household/garden appliances. I get through half a dozen batteries doing a full vacuum but swapping them out is easy and yes, it's just as thorough as a corded vacuum.

Whenever I remember. We got a loft conversion in our bungalow a couple of years ago and I keep forgetting that I have stairs to vacuum. Well, that’s my excuse anyway😃

mondaytosunday · 24/09/2026 17:29

Meh it’s hard to hoover the stairs - I have a Henry and the tube isn’t long enough, the stairs are steep and narrow so you have to do an awkward balance thing. So I get my son to do it when he visits about once a month!

ThatKindCrab · 24/09/2026 17:47

It’s the blinking black socks and the “bits”…!

KiwiFall · 24/09/2026 18:16

Every time I hoover which is 1-2 times a week (no pets and children grown up).

Wonderknicks · 24/09/2026 18:27

Once in a blue moon until I got cleaners who do it every other week.

Springbuck · 24/09/2026 19:53

Daily, along with the rest of my house. I have three very fluffy cats so no choice.

CremeDeMure · 24/09/2026 19:56

Cleaner does it weekly.
I also have a fluffy cat. This has never felt like a reason to get the vacuum out in between her visits. I am a slattern.

therockingbird · 24/09/2026 20:07

Once a week, I do a room a day and the hallway and stairs is Thursdays ☺️

Ilikebluewhataboutyou · 24/09/2026 22:13

Never as we have laminate wooden floors for hall, stairs and landing. They do need sweeping and dusting though.

Weekly - or as needed. It doesn't really ever get 'dirty' as I don't wear shoes in the house.

ACatInHellsChance · 24/09/2026 22:17

Used to do it about once a month but more kids later even though it needs doing more often we just don't have the time. So its probably like 6 times a year or so now. Not proud, looks terrible in between, but Im not house proud and housework wise we are just able to manage the bare minimum to avoid living in utter squalor, don't have time for anything more than that.

globalswimmer · 24/09/2026 22:19

Maybe once every 6 weeks. Or less

sandwalk · 24/09/2026 22:28

Every 1-2 weeks, well maybe nearer 2, when I go through the whole house, 2 of us, no DC or pets.

rainbowsparkle28 · 24/09/2026 22:33

Never (the fact I’m in a flat might have something to do with it 🫣)…
