Boiled eggs and buppy soldiers

Does anyone else say buppy soldiers? It’s what everyone said when I was a kid but I haven’t heard it for years. My boyfriend from near Oxford had no clue what I was making to dip into my eggs

I assume it comes from bap as in bacon bap, which I think I’ve heard called a bacon bappy??

Dippy soldiers...

Or, in our case dippy marmite soldiers 😋

WingBingo · 23/09/2026 13:12

boiled egg and soldier fingers. Not heard “fingers” mentioned yet.

@KatieKat88 yes we let the fairies out!

Pennyplant19 · 23/09/2026 13:12

My Mum used to say bread and buppy so I thought buppy was butter?

Hotafternoon · 23/09/2026 13:13

Just boiled egg and soldiers in our house always.

I don't like the term dippy egg, sounds really childish, see also picky tea or picky bits.

Seziah · 23/09/2026 15:40

I’ve just googled and it says it’s a regional word from the south east around London and Kent (I’m on the south coast).

It also says buppy is a traditional baby-talk or regional dialect word for bread and butter, so I guess bread and buppy kind of works. Just sounds like bread and bread to me though!

Just soldiers! In fact I’ve just eaten them..

Westfacing · 23/09/2026 18:30

When did boiled eggs (and soldiers) become dippy eggs?

Can’t bear it - akin to an adult referring to their tummy!

Never heard of buppy

HexInductionHour · 23/09/2026 18:32

I thought buppy was butter too

Davros · 23/09/2026 18:34

I've never heard of it. I’m from London but West and Northwest

Boiled eggs and buppy was a regular at tea time when I was a little girl.

RaraRachael · 23/09/2026 18:39

Scotland- have never said buppy, dippy eggs or soldiers.

Just plain old boiled eggs and toast.

MadellineBellPictureMeGoneNS · 23/09/2026 18:48

@RaraRachael Ne Scottish upbringing
Born mid 60s none of the childish language of dippy eggs etc.
Mums were a bit sterner back then.

AnythingGoesAllThroughTheNight · 23/09/2026 19:27

MermaidG · 23/09/2026 19:32

Yes! cockney family and they say “buppy eggs” meaning what nowadays is dippy soliders

muddyford · 23/09/2026 19:52

Buppy was bread and milk when I grew up in the olden days. Like sloppy porridge.

Laska2Meryls · 23/09/2026 20:01

Mum use to give us Egg and Buppy ( bread and butter either as soldiers or in triangles ) for breakfast or tea to us as kids and I still think of it as that. She was born in Hastings but lived most of her life in (and we grew up) in Hampshire ..

Caledoniablue · 23/09/2026 20:27

Egg and soldiers here (Cheshire) - we did have a thing where we were told to crack the eggshell after eating the egg 'to let the fairy out' - did anyone else have this because people look at me like I'm mad when I tell them... I've still passed on the tradition to DD(6) nonetheless😁

No no no. You bash the end of the egg to stop witches using it as a boat. Not nonsense about fairies.
