Your ‘emergency supplies/stockpile’.

Has anyone else started stashing a few things away in the event of some kind of ‘national emergency’ and if so, what sort of things are you storing?

I’m certainly not going to turn into a prepper but as I have plenty of storage space, I’ve got two big plastic boxes filled with dried goods (rice/pasta etc) and then some tinned stuff. I’ve also stocked up on batteries, candles and matches and I bought a solar charger. And oh, got two 5 litre bottles of water.

The temptation to go a bit nuts and plan for Armageddon is high! 😂😂 But I’m being sensible and just having enough for the basics to keep us going for about a week. I’m also cycling through the food so it doesn’t get wasted - use a tin of beans and then replace it etc.

Crossbow is perfect! No noise, reusable ammunition.

Also handy in case of a Zombie Apocalypse!

I might rewatch The Walking Dead further inspiration.

We're just Daryl Dixon wannabes, aren't we! 😂

Absolutely.

In addition to saving the world one zombie at the time we’ll also be contributing to the Net Zero effort with an energy efficient weapon and reusable arrows.

I'm totally not up to date with this thread as I see we are discussing crossbows.

However, if anyone needs any baked beans, my local Morrisons were doing a 4pk of Heinz 415g for £2 😁

I should add that I live in a heavily populated student area.

HTH.

If you had a crossbow, you could shoot the students clamouring for cheap baked beans.

There is no way I’m buying baked beans if there’s no water.

Unless I can use them in a catapult.

GentleSheep · 24/09/2026 21:57

Bonus: you won't need a tin opener if you use a crossbow to open your baked beans tin!

If we're going to eat baked beans for a week I'm going to need to stockpile a lot more loo roll...

Then I would get free baked beans! This could be a good plan.

Has a PP indicated where I could acquire a reliable crossbow? Bonus points if I can thread it through the loops of a Kanken backpack. Just the normal size FYI, not the fancy laptop one.

Apparently it's illegal to carry a crossbow in a public place without a lawful reason or reasonable excuse, but surely needing baked beans is reasonable? In an apocalypse? You're not allowed to hunt animals but baked beans should be fine!

I reckon Decathlon would do a good, reasonably priced crossbow. Could use it to hunt for both beans and spaghetti hoops....

This is useful information, thanks. I'll add it to the Filofax (lo-fi). I wouldn't want to fall foul of the law. It is quite reasonable to expect a certain amount of bean related decorum in the event of an apocalypse, and everyone should understand what this meanz.

Oh, another thing to add to the Filofax. How did you know I like spaghetti hoops though? They haven't been in my basket for around 20 years.

Christ, I had better get some in.

Glampingqueenonly17 · 25/09/2026 00:51

I don’t have any extra but we always have lots of store cupboard ingredients and I believe we could make meals for at least 10 days - they’d be random!

I do wonder though if I should buy some water and a few other bits - we have severe allergies here so it might be a good idea to have a tub of some extras.

GarlicSomething · 22/09/2026 16:37

OMG, @Sweetpea1532, you're a serious prepper!

If I need to be whistling for rescue or starting fires in the wild, I'm giving up. My outward bound days are far behind me, with no wish to repeat. It was miserable enough while I was young and fit!

Hahaha! lol @GarlicSomething I live in California and the authorities drill into us the proper items needed if there’s an earthquake. Fortunately, I’ve had no occasion to use any of the items on my list.

Oh no, I almost forgot something…. A special wrench so you can turn off the gas at the meter in case of a gas leak, and also familiarize yourself with your water meter so you can turn it off at the main in case of a broken pipe.

You may wish to consider how you heat/cook your food when there is no gas or electricity?

Most people on here and the multiple other similar threads already have or are looking at portable gas stoves, firepits/bbqs and if they have them, wood burners as alternative cooking methods.

I’ve probably got enough canned/ dried/ long life food for a week now, plus I have cleared my freezer and have started adding to a freezer drawer of veg, fruit, and meat. I spend about £10 per week. I’m pretty much at the limit of food items really because otherwise things will be hard to keep in date. The next thing is a power bank and a torch. I also need to actually store it somewhere because currently it’s all in a big bag in my cupboard but I think I need to get hard plastic crates with lids.

Ive Just seen a great wind up radio on Amazon, runs on batteries, solar and wind up. It has a torch, a solar panel and you can charge your phone. Did a Which and it was the best on the market. https://amzn.eu/d/090IVDtS

😂 You'd think there's nothing in between everything going well and annihilation, wouldn't you?!

Power grid goes down - nothing works.
Storms, floods - no deliveries, no phone.
Water plant disrupted - no tap water.
Cable network disrupted - no phone or internet.
Local power outage - no fridge, cooker, heating, router.
Pandemic - imagine the next one has a high, fast mortality rate.

We're really lucky that we live in a place with very stable geology and pretty uneventful weather. We have had mega-storms in the past, though, and will again. Russia/China/Korea are less likely to nuke us than to disable our services by hacking or good old sabotage. We seem to be (mostly) fending these attacks off at present, but it's a race: probably not wise to assume Our Guys will always beat Their Guys. Oh, and the Sun's overdue for a massive geomagnetic storm that will fry a large portion of the world's electrics.

For the majority of us in the UK, these things are not fatal in themselves but very, very inconvenient. Therefore it's rational to make a modest amount of preparation so we've covered the basics for our households.

It doesn't matter if you don't, though. Well, it will if something happens but you'll be able to survive being hungry and cold until someone better prepared comes to help.

I have something similar to that @ThisWiseRobin 😊 It takes ages to wind up but it did a good job of being a torch. I'm going to try to charge it outside today and see how that goes
