Your ‘emergency supplies/stockpile’.

Has anyone else started stashing a few things away in the event of some kind of ‘national emergency’ and if so, what sort of things are you storing?

I’m certainly not going to turn into a prepper but as I have plenty of storage space, I’ve got two big plastic boxes filled with dried goods (rice/pasta etc) and then some tinned stuff. I’ve also stocked up on batteries, candles and matches and I bought a solar charger. And oh, got two 5 litre bottles of water.

The temptation to go a bit nuts and plan for Armageddon is high! 😂😂 But I’m being sensible and just having enough for the basics to keep us going for about a week. I’m also cycling through the food so it doesn’t get wasted - use a tin of beans and then replace it etc.

It’s you again. Why go on another thread like this and take over, just replying with yet another question that doesn’t make much sense. Only acceptable to somewhat prep if you live in a rural place. I mean, I know you can because it’s a chat forum after all. But why bother, just do you.

Because it’s gleeful scaremongering.

I think you do you is the best advice for people who think it isn't necessary. I don't think it's possible to change the minds of those who are determined they are right on this sort of thing. Some seem to get satisfaction out of sneering at others.

Most sensible people realise that when the world is so unstable for all sorts of different reasons, then it's sensible to listen to the government when they ask us to be prepared for emergency situations. Those who don't listen will be the ones complaining and standing in queues.

Most people haven’t got the money and space to do all of this insane prepping. It is a privileged hobby being touted and selfless and sensible.

CandidHedgehog · 24/09/2026 18:31

Also, the idea is to prepare for different emergencies. If there is an issue with food getting to the shops (weather or cyber attack on distribution) but the power and water stay on, the water bottles and camping stove stay in the cupboard and I eat the stuff from my cupboards and freezer that needs cooking.

If there’s a power cut but my gas hob works, I use the matches I’ve bought plus stored water to cook some food (anything in the freezer first) but eat a fair amount of tinned food / ready to eat food to save water.

If the gas hob doesn’t work in the power cut, it’s a greater amount of tinned food that can be eaten cold.

If there is no emergency at all, I eat the stored food on rotation, having probably bought it at considerably cheaper prices than it will be after the drought this summer.

As I’ve said, I leave the preppers board to it, because they’re not harming anyone and it’s a hobby.

But these threads telling people they’re going to have no food and water or electric and water, and anything short of having gallons of water, a crossbow and enough food to feed the family for ten days (all of which has been said on Mumsnet on the last 24 hours) means you’ll be joining a sort of Hunger Games? It is stupid.

That’s fine. But that is a privileged stance and not a necessary one.

Ok so we all now know that FCCRULES isn't going to ensure she/he has emergency supplies. Thats fine. Lets move on

Good luck with that. Unfortunately that person keeps spamming until people leave the post because it becomes boring and fills up with meaningless crap.

Three days. And that’s been the advice for ages. Not bunkers.

You don’t have to agree or like it being discussed in this forum. But it is the governments advice, and it is an important subject to make people aware and help those who are vulnerable around them. Three days ot three weeks. Or however long. Don’t agree, but please stop reading and perhaps join a subject you do like. You are stopping people discussing in an unhelpful way, again.

WintersFrog · 24/09/2026 19:06

I'm quite curious to see what happens with El Nino in the next few months. And fuel prices. I've enjoyed some of the ideas on the thread. I was outside drinking coffee today at 6am and it was quite cold. I found an unzipped sleeping bag over me kept me a lot warmer than the throw i originally tried. Very handy if worried about heating costs or power cuts.
I don't feel inclined to get a crossbow or guns as apart from the fights over water i mentioned upthread, when there have been difficulties in bad weather or ie during covid, people mostly pulled together. I do still think that some of the so called greedy selfish people trying to buy more that what was perceived to be their fair share of say toilet paper or pasta could have been trying to get some for themselves and some for their elderly parents or someone they knew who couldn't get any.

They don’t. The vast majority of us are not going to find ourselves in a position where our taps are not giving us water, and all the shops are closed. It’s ridiculous.

The vast majority of us aren’t ever going to be in a position where our houses burn down either, but we still get insurance. Or do you think insurance is ridiculous too?

No, but if your house burns down you can’t just go to the shop and buy one.

Dannexe · 24/09/2026 19:25

I realised today that DS2 (teen) has two very large tubs of protein powder which he bought when on health kick and now seems to have abandoned. They would provide a useful source of protein even if you just had that and water available.

That's the thing, isn't it? Worth looking now and calculating what you've already got and what you might need to add. Bit like creating a capsule wardrobe rather than randomly buying anything that takes your fancy.

Our water went off abruptly for a day in the middle of the June heatwave. The humans in the house were happy to drink juice or beer, but we had to go to a neighbour for water for the pets.

So I now have a couple of big water bottles in the garage. We'll use them for camping, probably, and then replace them. In fact most of the prepping lists sound quite like my holiday packing anyway.

Maybe not the crossbow.

CatnipLeaves · 24/09/2026 19:48

Only one person on any of this week's threads has mentioned a crossbow, as far as I know, and tbh I'm not 100% sure they're not trolling. Even they haven't said that anyone else should have one, and quite possibly it's just something they had anyway and didn't buy specially (some people do own them anyway).

I think some people's understandable fear of disruption scenarios can't be eased by action, only by not thinking about them. Other people's understandable fear of those scenarios is eased by making plans. Different strokes. I think if you're in the first group you'd do better just avoiding threads like this. Discussion about something every single household in the country is in theory supposed to be doing is naturally going to turn up on all sorts of boards.

WintersFrog · 24/09/2026 19:49

Oh come on @ProsyFossil is it even a real camping holiday without a crossbow? 😂

Crossbow is perfect! No noise, reusable ammunition.

Also handy in case of a Zombie Apocalypse!

I might rewatch The Walking Dead further inspiration.

Silver bolts for werewolves? Garlic-tipped for vampires?

I always have garlic in the house, and MIL’s silver canteen.

I’m all set.
