Newborn settles in Moses basket but not bedside cot upstairs. Help!

Has anyone experienced and found a way around a newborn who wont settle in their crib? My baby will settle in their moses basket downstairs but not in the bigger bedside cot upstairs.

I've tried heating pads with little effect. I was recommended using a sleepyhead style pod in the crib by a family member but don't think that follows safe sleep rules.

Any tips? Id love to sleep for an hour in my own bed!

Take the moses basket upstairs? Put the moses basket in the cot next to you.

I asked about putting the moses basket inside the next to me but our health visitor said its a bad idea. Something about poor air ventilation?

If there arent any wild but workable suggestions I will start taking the downstairs set up to the bedroom each night.

Think most newborns prefer a Moses or similar small place to sleep. My grandson did and his newborn baby did late last year. They had a small Moses basket which they put in the middle of the two of them. He sent photos of it. He said there was no way they could suffocate the baby but the baby seemed happy between them.

Put the Moses basket on the floor by the bed and move the cot away for now?

Mathair2 · 20/08/2026 03:51

I used a clevesleep pod until they got bigger with both of mine!

HalftimeDaisy · 20/08/2026 03:51

I have dogs so putting the basket on the floor isn't an option (they are great dogs, but still not worth the risk).

I was reluctant to move the moses basket up so that I have a faff free room (downstairs) to take the baby if he stirs during the night but it sounds like maybe a second stand for upstairs and moving the basket might be my best option.

Either put the Moses basket in the crib (which our health visitor actually recommended to us!) or just move the whole basket and stand upstairs with you when you go to bed

God its crazy how advice changes between health visitors and midwives isn't it! Ive just ordered a second stand so I can retire the next to me for now, and take the basket up and down as needed.

Thanks everyone!

Just put the moses basket next to your bed.

Just put the moses basket next to your bed.

I've been trying to avoid that, so that Im not moving a baby/stand/basket downstairs when he's unsettled during the night. The second stand will hopefully give me less to mess about with between rooms.

Put a T shirt that you’ve been wearing into the crib.

FruAashild · 20/08/2026 05:35

Don't go downstairs with him if he stirs overnight, you want to start teaching the difference between night and day from the beginning. Keep him upstairs in the dark while feeding, just meet his needs but no stimulation. And if BF feed him lying down so you can rest, makes life a lot easier for you. There will no doubt be a bit of cosleeping but if he starts the night in his own bed that's fine.

QueenStevie · 20/08/2026 08:22

Take the moses basket upstairs for nighttime for now. Babies feel unsafe in a big crib. They need to feel secure in a smaller space.

Don't take him downstairs in the night if he stirs. Keep him upstairs in the bedroom so he knows it is nighttime and not play time. Have a lamp with a red coloured bulb in and use only that at night for feeds or nappy changes. Feed and change with as little fuss and interaction as possible during the night. Make it clear that night time is different to day time.

SleepingisanArt · 20/08/2026 08:48

Your baby has been snuggly cocooned inside your body before birth. The moses basket is a small safe space to a baby whereas a cot feels like a huge empty wilderness. Once the moses basket feels cramped your little one will be much happier to go into the cot. (It's the same as noise - people tiptoe around sleeping babies but the womb is a very loud place and babies can find silence terrifying. )

Peonies12 · 20/08/2026 09:10

Absolutely do not use a pod overnight. They are only to be used when fully supervised. Of course baby wants to feel cocooned.
You'll get more sleep if you can safely cosleep, especially if you're breastfeeding, you can just feed to sleep lying down then you don't have to move.

Luckymama2014 · 20/08/2026 10:24

We had same issue. Wouldn't sleep upstairs in anything, yet would sleep downstairs, we tried moving it upstairs, nope! Ended up taking turns sleeping on the sofa for 6 months!

ttcnumero2 · 20/08/2026 11:41

My baby wouldn't sleep in next to me at all and only slept in crib around 5 or 6 months. Before that, he would only sleep in the bassinet of the buggy. I think the next to me and crib just felt too open for him

Bitzee · 20/08/2026 11:52

Just get a stand for the moses basket? That’s what we had.

we had this. It basically fit in everything. The Moses basket, pram, next to me etc.

so baby always knew that was their bed. Made it a lot easier. Especially when travelling/visiting too

Did you make sure the sheet in the next to me smells of you? Also what does your DX sleep in? Mine loved grow-bags, so again I made sure they smelled of me

I did, he sleeps in a love to dream swaddle or sometimes a blanket swaddle.

The extra stand is due to arrive this afternoon so I'll be moving the moses basket up tonight and asking my husband to wear some noise cancelling headphones while we bed it in

I hope that solution works, OP. Sounds the best idea.
In the meantime, I want to say how adorable it is that your little guy already knows his own mind! I predict great things for him!
