Scrabble is good but what else is there?

I’ve loved playing a board game in an evening with dh. We play Scrabble. I can’t think of any other games to play. I don’t want to play chess or similar (draughts etc), not sure about card games. Any suggestions?

I like Othello, and I want to learn to play backgammon.
Though not a board game, Mil like mah-jong, it’s brilliant apparently.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 19/08/2026 09:43

Backgammon. Great fun

Poppingby · 19/08/2026 09:48

Oooooooh so many things. Letter games: Bananagrams, Boggle. Collaborative games: The Mind, in which you try to tune in to each other, Sky Team where you are a plane pilot and copilot landing a plane, Dorf Romantic where you're building villages and train tracks. Competitive: Timeline (put historical events in order, it's French so some of the facts are a bit, well, French), Odin's Ravens which is effectively a race between crows, Wingspan is a nice bird based game.

Gin rummy always fun too! Or any Exit game if you fancy a puzzle together.

Bananagrams
Qwirkle
Ticket to Ride
Azul

We like rummikub (not sure if that’s how it’s spelt) - same kind of thinking ahead and strategy as Scrabble at times.

Card games - Rummi (also don’t know how to spell that!), not sure if you could learn bridge/whist with two people?

We’ve got a Sherlock Holmes board game that is very good.

Do you think you could get into any of the role playing type games like Dungeons and Dragons? Not our thing but I know some peoole love them.

APurpleSquirrel · 19/08/2026 09:58

Board game variety is huge outside of the popular ones (Scrabble, Monopoly etc). Find a Board Game shop & have a browse or a Board Game Cafe were you can have a go before committing to buying one (they can be very expensive!).
Even the board game selection in places like Waterstones is expanding.

Trivial Pursuit?

PaperPanama · 19/08/2026 10:14

We introduced dd's boyfriend to Labyrinth last night. Dd wanted to play board games, and it was clear that her bf was just being polite. By the end of the game he was totally hooked and playing to win! It's an excellent game - highly recommend.

Fiddlesticks1 · 19/08/2026 10:18

Othello- game for two.

PotatoesAreLife · 19/08/2026 10:39

Qwirkle! It’s a tile game where you score for tiles you put down so similar to scrabble and I love it!

itsgettingweird · 19/08/2026 10:41

Boggle

Yahtzee

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 19/08/2026 10:42

Bananagrams if you like scrabble
we also really enjoy azul as a simple ish game

dizzydizzydizzy · 19/08/2026 10:43

I like Qwirkle and Othello too. I also recommend Splendor and Carcasonne.

elliehamster · 19/08/2026 11:10

Thanks everyone! It’s going to take me a while to research which ones we like. I seem to remember a Sherlock Holmes game many years ago. It’s murky in my memory but I do remember enjoying it. There were four players then but I assume two can play?

Othello is another one I remember playing exactly once. Strategy. I enjoyed that.

I’ll research all the others. Now that tv (in my mind) is getting a bit boring I am excited to actually do something. I’m sure tv isn’t actually boring, it’s just that I don’t particularly like fiction (with the exception of Ludwig!) or crime, hospital type programmes (shudder). I could go for days without missing tv. Reading is my thing.

So many to try! It’s obvious you love games. Thanks for the suggestions. I am excited to look at those.

Second Labyrinth. Easy rules but needs some brain power.
I love the Cryptic Killers murder mystery packs.

handmademitlove · 19/08/2026 18:14

Upwords, which is a variant on Scrabble but requires a different way of thinking!

southchinasea · 19/08/2026 21:34

We like Scrabble and also enjoy Qwirkle, it's similar in some ways but you make patterns with colours and shapes rather than words.

inkgirl · 19/08/2026 21:38

Depends on your sense of humour but cards against humanity can be a good laugh

FunnyOrca · 19/08/2026 21:43

Carcassonne
Tsuro
Tokaido
