Are heels or sandals better

OP posts:

Trainers. Haven't worn anything except trainers on a night out since my 6th form days, when clubs wouldn't let you in with trainers.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 18/08/2026 17:07

I wear smart flat shoes. I went to a reflexologist a while ago, and one of her first comments was, "I see that you're not one who wears heels very often!"

Reader, I have tried heels for the occasional wedding and things. I would prefer to wear wellies all day instead!

Dragonscaledaisy · 18/08/2026 17:11

Heels - very fashionable despite what people on MN may claim. Mine are always super comfortable and easy to walk in.

If we're going dancing than ballet flats or some cute Mary Jane's. If dinner than heels. If we're going to the movies anything goes.

330ml · 18/08/2026 17:13

Depends on what I am wearing but usually a heel of some form, even heeled sandals.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 18/08/2026 17:14

Adidas samba

Epoisses · 18/08/2026 17:15

Trainers.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 18/08/2026 17:17

I wore heels to the races recently and hugely regretted it. I would've stood out as just about the only woman there not in heels if I'd been sensible and worn flats, but Christ did I pay for it.

Trainers, wedge sandals or flats are my options now. I'm committed to comfort.

EvelynBeatrice · 18/08/2026 17:22

Perhaps I have overly sensitive feet but I find most of the stylish fashionable ( and expensive) trainer brands mentioned on mumsnet very uncomfortable. When I wear trainers it’s for walking or exercising so it’s Skechers!

But I wont wear them ‘out’ or to work. At the moment I have a couple of pairs of ballet flats in neutral colours plus low wedge espadrilles for a little height.

I’m also a devotee of the ‘summer boot’! - suede ankle or cowboy boot in nude or tan - which are great for rainy days and which I feel make everything look good.

GoodkneeBadKnee · 18/08/2026 17:25

Trainers. Kitten heel thong sandals are in too and look good with capri trousers.

RockGirl · 18/08/2026 17:30

I wear DMs, with pretty much everything. Last time I did black tie I wore a dress to the floor and shiny DMs underneath.

How do heels make a woman look vulnerable?

Because it limits their mobility and ability to hurry or run away from potentially dangerous situations or people.

bananaboats · 18/08/2026 18:14

Most people just wear trainers these days but I have seen some mesh flats about as well. Never wear heels now or see anyone in them

What type wpuld go with a skirt tho

Have you honestly not seen women out wearing trainers with skirts and dresses? Have you been living under a rock for the last 10 years?

Exactly. Surely you’ve noticed that everyone wears trainers with everything.

I do wear my DM boots in winter.

TheChosenTwo · 18/08/2026 18:24

I don’t wear short skirts in the summer, only with tights in the winter (I do wear shorts in the summer and short summer dresses), I just wear whatever colourful trainers will go with the outfit. Whatever style that may be.
It’s really quite the norm to wear trainers with skirts and dresses and basically everything these days.
So much nicer than heels imo!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 18/08/2026 18:28

I wear Adidas Gazelle Bolds with most things. Matt silver Birkie Mayari sandals for posh. My feet are very big, my left ankle is very weak, and so my footwear is very informal. In this post Covid, post 50 world, I really don’t care.

Heels are so bad for posture, so bad for the back, so bad for the feet and legs that I honestly don't understand why anyone wears heels. On top of that the number of accidents people have wearing them and the fact tottering around on high heels generally looks pretty ridiculous and has the effect of making a woman look vulnerable.
Stick to sandals or footwear that actually looks good, is comfortable, and you can actually walk in OP.

I'm reaping the benefits now in my calf muscles of dancing all night in high heels in my youth.

Squidlette · 18/08/2026 18:39

I love heels so much, but my knees are paying the price of my 20s and 30s in heels all day.
Mind you, I can't wear flat flats either.

I wear trainers or a wedge now. Or a block heel for a posh night. Lifelong love of an Adidas shell toe.I hate wedges though. They just scream middle age- which I am!

Dontevenlookatme · 18/08/2026 18:49

If you want a vintage look with your capri pants wear a Breton shirt and ballet pumps.

minnowonthesay · 18/08/2026 19:20

I’d wear a kitten heel thong sandal with capri pants, but if you haven’t got any, I’d buy a kitten heel closed toe mule for going towards winter. They look good with barrel leg jeans too.

I think that’s more dated than vintage,,,,

countrylifeorcitylife · 18/08/2026 19:33

I was always a body con and sky high heels. I’m a doc marten gal now

Yes it would be a bit theme-y. I wasn’t entirely serious.

Zaza2020 · 18/08/2026 21:06

Maybe wedges of espadrils would be my summer go to rather than a heel these days.
