What is this white powder outside my house and what should I do?

I will attach a photo of a pile of white powder outside my house. Anyone know what it could be/why?

I live on an estate of hundreds of cookie cutter houses. Ordinary town. The houses are not cheap, but they are also not a £million. Lots of older people live here - they bought in the late 90s when the place was built, had a couple of kids who left home and the parents just stayed. So quite quiet. Some families, including us. Ordinary place.

Outside my house, there is a path/driveway. You can use it to walk between 2 of the estate roads, but you can't drive between them as there is a bollard on the footpath preventing this. You can drive in and get to my driveway and 4 other houses. So only vehicles coming to/from the houses such as our own cars/delivery drivers/trades would drive down here. But many people would walk with dogs, kids whatever.

The bush in the photo is mine. It's cut reasonably, it shouldn't be pissing anyone off or anything. I don't piss anyone off or argue with anyone over anything. It's not a place where anyone would park, unless someone had several visitors at once.

Other than this, at the entrance to the path/driveway by the road, there is a symbol, like a chalk outline in the shape of a lollypop or magnifying glass.

I don't think someone could have got out with shopping and dropped flour by accident as you wouldn't park up against the bush, you'd park on your own drive.

Amazon have been today, but they don't make a habit of chucking white stuff about!

I have a small dog so I am a bit pissed off about this and not keen on going to clear up random fucking powder, or having it blowing about by my property.

Any ideas?

Is there a shop nearby? Could someone have dropped a bag of flour?

hugasaurus · 17/08/2026 20:29

Is there a running club nearby? They sometimes use flour or chalk to mark a course.

There is a shop 5 mins walk away, however, it would be quite unusual to be walking so close to the bush. The width of the joint driveway/pathway is just under the width of 2 cars. So people just generally walk down the middle.

Do they often deposit so much flour?
I could understand that for the chalk mark, but the flour is odd - the path/drive just is like route between 2 estate roads - you would only be going back or forwards if you were by the flour, it's not like you could make a turn.

We have this all round our village occasionally. It’s used as waymarkers for walkers or joggers. They use it as it’s environmentally friendly.
Someone usually posts on the local facebook to pre warn the locals.

mysteriousdeposit · 17/08/2026 20:33

I mean there are some walking groups - often there will be about 15-20 retired people on an organised walk. I guess they may do it here as it's an estate that you can't go right through so there is not too much traffic.

Running club. I watched a man do this on a hiking path once and thought he must be mental until someone told me what it was.

RappelChoan · 17/08/2026 20:35

It’s called Hashing, posho runners do it.

TrugFullofLove · 17/08/2026 20:35

Definitely a running or walking club way marker. I see them every day around where I live.

mysteriousdeposit · 17/08/2026 20:35

There is a running club in the town. We are on the outskirts of the town.

Has your husband/partner showed any signs of withdrawal recently or mood swings (from one extreme to another)? I'll get to the point, could your husband be taking cocaine and he fallen over on the drive after inhalation? You can pick up a drug testing kit (goes different colour to indicate which substance) for less the £7

pimplebum · 17/08/2026 20:40

Who cares ? Sniff it , most likely chalk or flour

Noone sells drugs in that quantity/ theyd scoop it up

chemicals that hurt dog are usually blue pellets for slugs or weedkiller is a wet spray

OrangeFlower14 · 17/08/2026 20:40

So the flower or the powder isn’t actually on your property, maybe they’re running past it

The bush is the edge of my property, the pavers are council property

😂

Those pavers are about 20cm in length

If it was cocaine it would be long gone! Someone would have scooped (or snorted) it up! Wonder what the street value of a pile like that would be?!

I only wish it was pimplebum, a good friend of mine (of 20years) had a husband who was a secret drug user and she had no idea until the police caught him on the roof one day but I won't go into details. Drug use amongst the middle class is the highest it has ever been

If she scoops it up carefully she could be quids in!

Joking obviously, it's probably just flour.

I mean it's like half a bag of flour. My DH was working at the time it appeared. I've been to and from my house 4 times today and it appeared early afternoon.

Possibly used to mark distance

GreenFootstool · 17/08/2026 20:47

It'll be hash markings for a running club.

They dump it in our town every year without notices anywhere and every year the local Facebook groups are full of "lock up your dogs, the travellers have marked the field as a place to kidnap dogs / marked up my home for burglary / my sisters cousins dogs grandmother's dead uncle knows it's a signal that the house contains drugs and should be raided"
