If you know the next lines, where did you grow up?

We did it all the time as children. It didnt make sense then. It doesnt make sense now.

It popped into my head and no one here knew what I was talking about with with the finger action. I grew up West Mids.

Opened the doors, and here's the people. Grew up in Coventry. Sadly.

Variationofnormal · 17/08/2026 16:02

I loved that rhyme (home counties)

Also with similar actions but in reverse, here's the lady's knives and forks, here's the lady's table, here's the lady's looking glass and here's the baby's cradle.

‘Open the doors and here’s all the people’. East Mids

Why doesn’t it make sense? The church, the steeple, the doors, the people. I like it 😂

Yes exactly this
also East mids
My 7 yr old still does this!

EasyLifer · 17/08/2026 16:03

I am in W Mids too and also never saw or heard the bit about the parson.

Could I ask about a different rhyme? Does anyone remember the tricksy and slightly unkind actions that went with the following:

Here's a tree in summer.
Here's a tree in winter.
Here's a bunch of flowers.
And here's the April showers!

We did that, and also another "rhyme" which ended "spider crawling up your back, does this make you shiver?" (someone would crawl their fingers up your back then blow on your neck) - but I can't remember the rest of it!

feellikeanalien · 17/08/2026 16:06

Look inside and see the people
Here is the minister going upstairs
Here is the minister saying his prayers

Grew up in Scotland.

Open the doors and here are the people - south coast, Hampshire

I'm in the U.S, did this as a child and with my (now grown) children. We used to say, "Open the doors and see all the people."

I'll have to add it to my "I'm a Little Teapot" and other silly kid songs repertoire for the grandchildren.

Which bit doesn’t make sense?
I mean it’s not to scale but apart from that it’s spot on!
Norfolk

DerangedBillionaire · 17/08/2026 16:15

Open the doors
And here's all the people (waggle).
Also west mids/staffs border.

There's a whole other thread to be had about 80's clapping game rhymes. Some were very inappropriate for 7yo children.

My name's Davy
In the navy,
Sitting in the backseat
Nudge nudge.

DaisyDooley · 17/08/2026 16:16

Here’s the church
Here’s the steeple
Open the doors
And here’s all the people
Here is the Parson walking up the stairs
And here we are saying our prayers.

North Yorkshire.

HelenaWilson · 17/08/2026 16:17

Open the doors (move your thumbs) and here's all the people. SE London/Kent.

I'd forgotten the baby's cradle. You had your first two fingers together for the looking glass, then put the last two fingers together, and rocked your hands from side to side.

Can't remember where I learned them, whether from mother or at school.

'Open the doors, here are the people'

Cheshire and always known it. Also 'two little dickie birds ...' where you hid your fingers behind your back.

Gosh, that makes me think of my granny who always did the two little dickie birds one for us!

ScotiaLass · 17/08/2026 16:19

I grew up in Central Scotland and it was open the doors and see all the people which were your wiggly fingers!

Does anyone remember a similar rhyme that started "Here's Maggie Thatcher..."?

SeraphinaRainbird · 17/08/2026 16:19
