Do you make an assumption about someone based on their name?

I'll start on the next post....

What kind of assumptions? What are you implying?

SaraHoliday · 17/08/2026 11:27

I work in HR. We do this all the time! BUT 'Don't judge a book by it's title!'....

Harry - Smart. Polite. Well mannered. Impeccable dress sense. Excellent at monotonous tasks.

Dan - Fit. Nice on the eyes. Not much else going on.

(These are all to be taken light-heartedly by the way!)

Zero - Young. Fashionable. Laid back. Likely to have added an inappropriate email address on his application form.

Yes of course. If a “Chardonnay” applied for a role it’s difficult to remain unbiased. Doubly so if they have a “unique” spelling.

SaraHoliday · 17/08/2026 11:32

Brian - Not dangerous. Reliable. Quiet. Competent.

I’m afraid so - I’ve never met many Lee’s or Darrens or Wayne’s who were not ‘Im funny me’ ‘geezers’ - I’m sure some mumsnetters will say their H is called this and not like that atall

Brian - Not dangerous. Reliable. Quiet. Competent.

And aged at least 65!

SaraHoliday · 17/08/2026 11:36

Jamie - Spoilt as a child. Thinks the world should revolve around him. Inflated ego.

I think it will depend on the age you are as a lot of name stereotypes are outdated.

Alexandra - Doesn't like her name. Has to keep repeating with an 'ra' not a 'er'. Long straight hair.

Daisy-Mae

Lily-Mae

Aleesha-Mae

Screamy, shouty parents and spends a lot of time out with friends to avoid them.

Jenny - Pleasant. A 'girl next door' type. Loyal. Reliable.

Im more likely to make judgements on their parents more then the person themselves 😂

Æ A Xii (one of Elon Musk’s!)

First impression would be how the f**k do you pronounce it!!

Daffodilsinthespring · 17/08/2026 12:11

I can tell which of our patients will have safeguard issues by their name.

I mean, there are studies showing people do this all the time - if you have a name that is traditionally white and upper class you're much more likely to get a job interview than one that is obviously non-white or associated with working class families. Male names likewise - Stephen is more likely to get a job interview for senior management than Stephanie, even with the exact same CV.

Why? As a teacher I never judged a child by their name but possibly their parents. The child has no say in it.
