Do you say ‘love you’ to friends?

Curious as to how others handle this. In our family we always said we loved each other but I know (of course) that not every family is like that.

Today if I’m chatting to friends who I’ve known for a long time or who genuinely feel like family I’ll say ‘love you bye’. Most of the time it’s met with ‘love you too’ or occasionally it’s a bit awkward. I only say it to people where there’s a genuine depth of relationship.

Curious as to others - do you say ‘love you’ to friends?

Only Mum Dad and DH

Adviceneededtonightplease · 16/08/2026 18:36

Not to all friends, even close ones, but the ones who we’ve been through a lot together, yes. More of a Love you, bye! Saying that out loud though, maybe it is unusual.

Coincidinki · 16/08/2026 18:37

No. I don't think I have had any friends I've loved since I was a teenager. I'd say I'm fond of my friends but I wouldn't describe it as love. The only people I love are my parents, sister, husband and I'd probably include my mother-in-law as well after 20+ years of her kindness to me. And I love my cats.

There's nothing wrong with loving your friends and telling them so, I'm just not that close to any of mine.

Summerhillsquare · 16/08/2026 18:38

Yes, some of them.

I saw Adrian Edmondson performing last year, he talked about Rik Mayall and their enduring friendship til the latter's death. He said he never told him he loved him and regrets that now. He asked us to do so. Not a dry eye in the house...

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 16/08/2026 18:39

Yes, but only to my bf. Her dad killed himself and the day it happened (we were 26) she called me and was screaming ‘who will love me now’ and sobbing and I said I would always love her. We’re 52 now and I tell her I love her all the time, at least 3x a week. She loves me too. It’s good.

TheyGrewUp · 16/08/2026 18:39

No. Only to DH and the DC. Wouldn't say it to DIL or future son in law. Never to my parents. My dad's been dead for decades although I loved him very much. My mum, never. She made it very clear she didn't love me.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 16/08/2026 18:39

Yes.

Probably too much. I have a small circle but they mean the world to me.

Arlanymor · 16/08/2026 18:40

There five people in my life who I say "I love you to" and two of them are two of my best friends who I am not related to. Love isn't finite, there's plenty to go around.

LondonLass2026 · 16/08/2026 18:40

Just my good friend in America, we've seen each other through affairs, (not ours) deaths of parents, and childbirth. We don't get to meet up much as she is in the US, and me UK, but yes when we email and it's an emotional time, we will say I love you at the end.

IdaGlossop · 16/08/2026 18:40

I never say it to anyone. I say 'I love you' because 'love you' is lazy.

SunshineAndFizz · 16/08/2026 18:41

Bit weird.

Oooo10000 · 16/08/2026 18:41

I have many good friends but there are 2 that i love dearly.I always finish a call with love you.

EmailsaysOOO · 16/08/2026 18:41

Nope. I would write it in a card but that's all.

TheEarlofButties · 16/08/2026 18:42

All but my best friend who is creeped out by any kind of affection so we say f you, f you too. Sometimes f you to the moon and back.

youalright · 16/08/2026 18:42

No never say it only to kids

CordwainerBird · 16/08/2026 18:42

I never say “love you bye” to anyone, ever. It’s odd!

Softcream · 16/08/2026 18:44

No I don't. Only my parents, DC and DH.

Crudd99 · 16/08/2026 18:44

Oh my…I understand that all too well. Your response was completely perfect. I’ve been through a lot with one of my friends too. We’ve been besties for 35+ years and so many times she’s told me the truth of what I don’t want to hear or we’ve stuck together through divorce and bereavement - I love her to bits. We’re fortunate (and rare) to have a solid friendship like that.

Bit weird.

Why?

Indianajet · 16/08/2026 18:49

I lost my best friend of over 30 years last Christmas - I am so glad I told her I loved her the last time I saw her.

FamingolosForDays · 16/08/2026 18:50

Yes. All of them. Plenty of it to go round and everyone needs to hear they are loved. Im fortunate to have some really really good friends.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 16/08/2026 18:50

Yes I do, I've lost too many people without having told them. So now I tell them. I don't have many close friends but we all know we are loved!

Helpwithdivorce · 16/08/2026 18:50

Not to all of them but to the closest ones.
My best friend I tell her I love her every single day without fail, always before I go to sleep. I send her a message to tell her I love her. She has incurable cancer and I never know when that last I love you will be
