Can anyone read this old inscription?

Any educated guesses as to what this might say/have once said? I’ll put it both ways up as I’m not sure what’s right. Wonder if it was Holly? Or maybe the Ls are 7s the other way up?

Is it 1. 10. 11? A date?

rainydaysandmondaysagain · 15/08/2026 17:16

Ooh maybe, I like that

Yep it’s a date for sure

chirrupybird · 15/08/2026 17:22

I thought it was a name or a word but too worn to read. Is it attached to a person with a particular name that would look like that when worn? Or a particular loving word that they used?

KnittingBasket · 15/08/2026 17:42

Could it be the year 1704.

I'm interested in old print and to me that looks like 1704 written in the style of that era. The 4 particularly looks like from the Queen Anne era to me.

You generally only see writing of this type o0n graves these days.

Igmum · 15/08/2026 17:58

1104 or possibly 7104 or 1704

The last digit is definitely a 4

Notbuiltforheat · 15/08/2026 18:02

Is there a hallmark too? That’s a ring isn’t it? Can we see the rest of it for style?

rainydaysandmondaysagain · 15/08/2026 20:51

Oh 1704 is interesting. I’m pretty sure it’s Edwardian, so could be 17th April?

It is a ring and there is a hallmark (that I also can’t read, but I’m told it’s 18k gold).

Whole ring looks like this.

another vote for 1104 as there seems to be a base for both first digits. guess an engagement date or similar?

TwitTwoodiniEscapeOwlogist · 15/08/2026 21:40

To me it looks like the four numbers weren't inscribed at the same time. The 04 is beautifully etched in a pretty font. The two 1s are not of the same quality. and not done by the same person as the 04. I wonder if 04 was the date of manufacture (e.g.1904). And perhaps the other two numbers are pawnshop marks from when it was pawned at a later time.

MrsMoastyToasty · 15/08/2026 21:43

Can you put a picture of the hallmark? It will tell us city where it was made and when.

I’ll take one in the morning - I can’t read anything at all of it tbh.

7104

Venusunbroken · 15/08/2026 21:55

Likely a date, I wear my grandmothers engagement ring and it has the date of their engagement engraved on the inside.

Definitely numbers - not letters x How did you acquire it?

The best thread on here just now! I like a mystery

rainydaysandmondaysagain · 16/08/2026 08:07

I’m afraid this doesn’t help - it might just need a good clean, I’m not sure! Both ways up again, as I’m not sure which is right.

From an antique shop, as my engagement ring 😁❤️ I love the idea of it having a history

I tried to enhance the hallmark in photoshop, but I can't see anything more on the lighter version. Possibly there's something that looks a bit like a crown on the top right, but it seems too small to be a crown hallmark. It also looks to me (I'm no expert though), as though the hallmark is one long punch, (British hallmarks are usually small individual punches) and then there has been a second small square punch (maker's mark?) punched slightly over it on the right hand side, as you can see the top and bottom of the punch don't quite match the rest of the long punch.

I meant to say that the second punch is on the left hand side, not the right

That’s so interesting! So maybe not British?

1104 I think…could it be 1st October ‘04? I only say that because it looks ‘home made’ and not done by a proper engraver.
