What’s doing well in your garden despite the heat?

And what kind of soil do you have/whereabouts are you?

Thought it might be interesting to see which plants are surviving (or even thriving) through this hot summer without watering in case anything has died and needs replacing. My garden is parched but the things still doing well are:

Sedums
Penstemons
Scabious
Hydrangea paniculata
Salvias
Mullein
Mexican fleabane

I’m in Cornwall on crappy stony acid soil.

Most of my established shrubs in the ground were doing ok until this week but they are suddenly all starting to look shrivelled and droopy 😞.

susiedaisy1912 · 14/08/2026 18:42

Verbena
crocosmia
Hollyhocks
Gaura

are all doing really well in my south facing garden even if they don’t get watered for a few days.

Without watering?

Established hydrangea, laurels, palm.

With watering?

Tomatoes, rose trees, squash.

What’s failing despite watering?
My damn courgettes.

Excluding things in pots; most of the planted garden is doing fine - I’m in Somerset on clay soil.
The ones thriving are the drought tolerant plants like rosemary, salvias, nepeta, verbena, Mexican fleabane, irises, thyme, oregano etc. But even the buddleia & roses etc are still fine. I’ve only given the garden a soak maybe 3-4 times since May? Usually if a few plants are wilting (usually the deutzia) I’ll get the hose (no hosepipe ban here yet). That’s not to say the plants aren’t stressed - they are, even the trees but the benefits of clay soil is it holds moisture deep down.

We are on clay (used to be a brickworks!) and lots of things are dying or at least struggling. Even our roses are turning yellow now. The plants in our raised bed though seem to be doing a lot better, we have acers, agapanthas, lavender and daphnes that are all fine.

And of course the 100+ year old Cedar is thriving and sucking all the water away from anything else I plant. It’s honestly an absolute behemoth.

CatrinVennastin · 14/08/2026 19:18

Our olive tree is thriving, rhubarb is ok, everything else is dead!

We are in London with heavy clay soil.

the olive tree was planted by the previous owner and came from the village in Italy where she grew up. It’s my favourite thing in the garden.

JurgenKloppsTeeth · 14/08/2026 20:37

@muddyford I’m surprised that the cistus are struggling, they are from the Med so I’d expect them to tolerate the drought well. Might rethink planting one in that case.

Whoever said ceanothus: yes! Mine is looking magnificent. It gets battered by cold winter winds but it’s resplendent at the moment. I don’t have roses but all the ones nearby are doing pretty well. Passion flower in a neighbour’s garden is also having a moment.

Ive been away for 5 weeks and DH did not water the patio pots at all. Oddly my ferns are doing really well. Lush, green. Geraniums are flowering. Lobelia dead. I have a garden full of David Austin climbing roses and they are flowering, fragrant and althougn the leaves have started to be a little yellow and dry, they are keeping on.

Morethanadecade · 14/08/2026 20:42
