Fed up of electric toothbrushes breaking. Are there any reliable brands?

We've always used Oral B but they just stop working after a while. I've lost track of how many we've had but we probably have to replace one a year.

Are there any (not too expensive) brands which are more reliable?

Another vote for Suri. Not cheap but they are made in the uk and reparable plus you can send the heads back to them pre paid for recycling. Plus they look bouji 😁

ToadRage · 13/08/2026 09:41

You are unlucky, I have had oral b for years and they didn't break. I just have a cheap battery one now but I have had expensive rechargeables in the past.

My oral B toothbrush is about 15 years old and still going strong.

I love my Suri!

RamsayBoltonsConscience · 13/08/2026 09:49

Another vote for Siri here. Mine had a fault were it spontaneously turned on and ran the battery down (after having had it for two years), they sent me a new one no problem at all.

I've just replaced my 5 year old Philips Sonicare because the spindle came out. A shame really, as it still held a good charge. I replaced with another, as I like the shape of the heads. Dentist said my teeth were tip top at my last check up a few weeks ago.

crazytiredrn · 13/08/2026 10:03

I use Philips and whilst I really like their toothbrushes they stop charging after a few years.

LeapyearLoser · 13/08/2026 10:04

Had my oral b for years too; heads are the cheap ones from Amazon.
Never a problem here.

Doggymummar · 13/08/2026 10:11

Ours is over a decade old, what are people doing to them?

Thatcannotberight · 13/08/2026 10:22

We've got Oral Bs. A couple of the chargers have stopped working but the toothbrushes are still good after several years.

I've ben using Oral B for years but the last three I bought all lose their charge really quickly...

😬

I've had 2 oral b io2 in less than a year. Batteries just won't hold their charge.

You've got me wondering now. Perhaps the issue with my replacement heads never fitting is an issue with the spindle rather than the heads?

ExtremeDecluttering · 13/08/2026 11:02

We share one Oral B between 4 of us (different heads obvs). Usually have to replace it every 4 or 5 years when the battery stops holding charge so well. Only charge it when it flashes or slows down.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 13/08/2026 11:21

Mine is either Braun or oral b. Never broke

SettledAndHappy · 13/08/2026 13:01

I think it's a charging issue.

I aim to put it on the charger overnight every night, which does happen sometimes, but I'm chronically disorganised so most of the time in practice it charges every 4 days or so.

When they break, you press the on button and nothing happens. Often a few minutes later or the next day it works again. After a few more days you press the button and nothing happens, which is usually the end, though sometimes it will work for a couple of minutes only over a few days before finally giving up the ghost. Every toothbrush we've had has followed the same pattern

Is your charging point overcharging? That's why mine finally stopped working after about 8 years. The charger was getting very hot and cooked the battery. I initially changed the brush handle but realised it was the wall-mounted charger at fault.

I only charge mine when the battery runs out. You'll ruin the battery charging it every night.

IdentifyingAsAWoollyMammoth · 13/08/2026 13:10

I only charge mine once a week when it tells me it needs charging.

On my second Oral B in nine years.

SettledAndHappy · 13/08/2026 13:12

Sounds like I might be charging it too often. I've never used one where it tells me it needs charging.

My Suri only needs charging once a month at most !

There's supposed to be a mm or 2 gap between the head and the body i think? Mine doesn't fit flush, but it feels stable. Maybe you do have a loose spindle.

You can tell it needs charging as the speed of rotation suddenly drops and it sounds duller. Mine also has flashing red light when it needs to charge.

oneoffname · 13/08/2026 19:26

We first got electric toothbrushes about 25 years ago. All oral B. I replaced my first one when it got to the stage of needing charging virtually daily. In January this year, my second one suddenly started turning itself on randomly at all times of day and night. I replaced with another oral B in January this year. DH is still on his second oral B and so far no problems with it.
OP, it sounds as though you have been very unlucky with your toothbrushes!

I bought my current one direct from the oral B website as they had an offer which gave me the toothbrush, a pack of replacement heads of my choice, a travel pouch, mouthwash and toothpaste for a price that was much cheaper than Boots, Amazon etc, so definitely worth having a look on there.

Happytaytos · 13/08/2026 19:45

I'm using a 20+ year old oral B. What are you doing to them?

Charging every night isn't needed. They aren't like a phone.

inkgirl · 13/08/2026 20:24

They should be lasting longer than that. My last oral b lasted 4 years before it broke
