Is this enough food for a barbecue?

I’m having a barbecue for 24 people on Saturday. I haven’t hosted for this many before so can I check with those if you who are more experienced whether this is the right amount of food?

On the barbecue:

24 burgers
24 hot dogs

Prepared in advance and served cold:

50 buns
A large gammon joint
15 barbecue chicken drumsticks
15 plain drumsticks
A potato salad with lemon and garlic
Homemade coleslaw
A Caesar salad
Another type of vegan salad

Then for people arriving I’ll have a cheeseboard, crisps, dips, and sweets out.

Is it enough? Should I add a pasta salad?

I think it's probably because of what comes across as repeated incredulity that people won't eat as much as X, when there have been numerous comments and anecdotes about people eating X.

That's not to say your guests will, I hasten to add. They may be far more reserved. But you asked if the amounts you were planning to serve were enough and quite a few people have said, in simple terms, no.

I appreciate you have said throughout the thread about mixing things up a bit and adding more in, but not everyone will have followed all 7 pages of comments and may only have seen more recent posts (which may include you questioning whether people will really eat that much).

I think if you are really concerned about over-catering the BBQ and not having enough space on the BBQ itself, perhaps get some frozen pizzas and garlic bread which you can whack in the oven, later on, if people get the munchies and all the meat / stodge has gone.

I cannot be arsed with an argument on a thread about barbecue food.

Whilst it may be enough food overall, it doesn't offer enough flexibility only offering 1 of each item per person. I'd probably buy 35-40 each of burgets, sausages and drumsticks. You can always chuck any unused/uncooked things in the freezer.

It’s nowhere near enough food. Plus it’s not all going to be ready at once and people graze at a BBQ. Blokes will help themselves to several sausages whilst waiting for the burgers to be ready, a couple of chicken drumsticks and then pile on the coleslaw, potato salad.

You’ll have non red meat eaters taking 2 or 3 chicken pieces each, they aren't exactly filling.

I’d do way more meat than you have planned, 24 people eat a lot, especially when drinking - 72 different flavours of quality sausages (not hot dogs filled with crap and no protein). 48 burgers - pork and apple, lamb and mint, beef, 48 chicken drumsticks. Don’t bother with gammon or hot dogs, both weird at a bbq and don’t be the person who runs out of food halfway through the guests being fed.

This is standard in hospitality for bbq per person - approx 400g raw meat per person, some will eat more, some less.

  • Burgers: 1 thick burger (150g to 200g) or 2 thin burgers (75g each)
  • Sausages: 1 large quality gourmet sausage (100g) or 2 standard sausages (60g to 75g each)
  • Chicken Drumsticks: 1 large drumstick (100g) or 2 standard drumsticks (60g to 75g each)

Bleeding eck that's a lot of food!

But why don’t you eat it? It doesn’t have to go in the bin? Sausage sarnie the next day? Nothing better than a bowl of mixed salads leftover from a Barbie for lunch - makes me feel like I’m at the Morrisons deli 🤣

It’s only me in the house. I’m not particularly keen on sausages or burgers but even if I did have one the next day, I couldn’t eat it all before it was off.

From my barbecue on Friday I ate the left over chicken and hot dogs the next day, and had the potato salad and coleslaw for a couple of meals, but I am going to have to throw most of it out. There’s just loads left.

I am amazed at the number of people saying this massive amount of food isn't enough! It's so much!

We all have different ideas about what should be on a barbie and OP knows her guests better than us so will know what people will want.

Personally, I am vege and don't like fake meat. I do love a vege and tofu skewer though.. We usually have a meat and a vege barbecue set up because everyone likes the veges.

Husband barbecues a lot of fish for the - esp mackeral and large prawns & oysters. If sausages - the higher welfare ones. Sometimes home made lamb burgers but otherwise we don't do them. Kids always want chicken IME.

It wouldn't work for a large gathering like this but husband loves barbecuing a leg of lamb, carving bits off it like a kebab. It only works for a long and casual meal with old friends & some nice red.

It's an odd BBQ if the only meat actually cooked on the BBQ is burgers and sausages and not even real sausages but hog dogs. Why bother lighting the BBQ? In my experience most people, especially men eat 2 burgers and several sausages. I understand 24 is a lot to cater for, if you are set on doing cold meats why not just have a garden party?

This is what I’m doing though? A thick burger, a big sausage and 1-2 drumsticks each?

Because I’ve told her people it’s a barbecue. I’m certain people aren’t coming for the culinary experience, but I don’t want them to be hungry. I want to be able to chat to them and socialise, not be stuck at the barbecue all day. So I want plenty of food and then just lighting the barbecue as a gesture towards it.

Why do you need a gesture towards a BBQ, you are allowed to change your mind and just have buffet food. Hot dog sausages are just vile. If you do light the barbie for goodness sake cook a real sausage.

Jaimelefromage · 11/08/2026 17:10

I’ve never had hot dog sausages cooked on a BBQ before. I thought they were generally boiled? I wouldn’t eat them so would probably want more than one burger.

Why on earth did you tell people it was a BBQ, if you can't actually be bothered to cook a proper BBQ? You'd have been better off hosting a buffet you could prepare in advance.

If I'm invited to a BBQ, I'd expect, as a minimum, plentiful food cooked on the BBQ.

dontmalbeconme · 11/08/2026 17:14

Oh God, just seen you're planning on serving hot dog sausages. Please don't. They're vile. At least get decent butchers sausages.

Are you really short of money? Are you just trying to host people on the cheap?

BreadInCaptivity · 11/08/2026 17:14

I’d definitely get more sausages rather than one per head. I think a burger per person is fine, but I can absolutely see quite a few people having more than one sausage (especially if they don’t like chicken drumsticks- and not everyone likes dark chicken meat).

impatientfury · 11/08/2026 17:15

In my experience, people have one burger and one sausage in a bun/roll each, then at least 1 maybe 2 more loose sausages on the plate. I wouldn't do gammon, I'd do the chicken, id do at least double the sausages to people and maybe 34 burgers, minimum. Just do one large leaf salad, one large pasta bowl, and your usual coleslaw and potato salad. Condiments, cheese slices, jar of pickled bettroot. Done.

BreadInCaptivity · 11/08/2026 17:16

Oh god please proper sausages and not hot dogs….

Agree - more (proper sausages) and ditch the gammon.

I have done some very limited market research and of the five people I’ve asked four prefer hot dogs and only one sausage, so I thought hot dogs were a safe bet.

I don’t mind doing the burgers and sausages/hot dogs, but I don’t want to do loads more on it.

I first had them barbecued in Finland whilst looking at the Northern Lights. They were absolutely delicious but the vibe might not be the same in my garden.

If I went to a barbecue I wouldn’t ‘expect’ anything other than food, drink and good company.

It’s a small barbecue and the burgers and hot dogs will take plenty of time. I’m not spending more hours cooking on it, and that is that.

Loads of people prefer hot dogs. You’re not coming so you don’t have to worry about it. I asked about quantity not whether you personally like hot dogs.

They definitely are. Millions of people cook hotdogs on the barbecue.

I just don't understand threads like this. OP asks if what they are offering will be enough food. Very nearly everyone says no. OP argues blind that it absolutely will be.
Hot dog sausages are VILE. A proper Butcher's sausage done on the barbecue is yummy. I could eat six.
And drum-sticks, cold, are ick.
Lose the gammon/pulled pork/whatever it ended up being, increase the burgers by 10, replace the hot dogs with double the number of proper sausages.

YouSawBrigadoon · 11/08/2026 17:26

I presumed you meant actual proper sausages in rolls rather than those processed hotdogs you get from carts in the US. This coupled with the gammon and cold chicken drumsticks is making me think it’s quite an unusual spread!
