Is this enough food for a barbecue?

I’m having a barbecue for 24 people on Saturday. I haven’t hosted for this many before so can I check with those if you who are more experienced whether this is the right amount of food?

On the barbecue:

24 burgers
24 hot dogs

Prepared in advance and served cold:

50 buns
A large gammon joint
15 barbecue chicken drumsticks
15 plain drumsticks
A potato salad with lemon and garlic
Homemade coleslaw
A Caesar salad
Another type of vegan salad

Then for people arriving I’ll have a cheeseboard, crisps, dips, and sweets out.

Is it enough? Should I add a pasta salad?

Actually, I am. We are all chatting about how you always under-cater in the group chat. We are planning to stop in at McDonalds on the way home.
We've had days of laughter regarding your gammon addiction and are wishing you weren't so stingy with the beers. No-one enjoys your salad.
And your veggie friend? She isn't actually veggie. She just can't face telling you that, really, she doesn't want a hot dog.

This is quite unhinged.

And she’s vegan.

To be fair there are two types of frankfurter. Premium (mainly smoked pork), and budget (may contain lips, eyelids, arse etc., more likely to be referred to as a hot dog sausage). I'm not keen on either but hopefully op will use the former.

Sorry, OP, but that's pretty hilarious.

TheGirlWhoLived · 11/08/2026 17:48

I think it’s a great amount of meat and salad but would probably add something like a fruit salad, fruit skewers or just a large platter of watermelon, nice and easy to prep in advance and will definitely break up the food

I do think it’s unusual to be able to eat two burgers, two hot dogs, chicken, gammon/pork and sides. Fair dos to those who can but it isn’t the norm.

I’m not eating your crap pink hot dogs, stop pushing them onto me!
I said I could eat two proper meaty sausages, 2 burgers, chicken if it was hot and off the bbq and the sides.
I don’t want any of your lips and arse pink E number sausages thanks and gammon makes people too thirsty, and on a bbq? 🤔

Is this menu due to wanting to keep costs low? Genuine question as I'm sure people could help with low cost ideas that would be a hit with most people.
I'm thinking things like bean salads, cous cous, chicken thighs and drumsticks (could be cooked in oven and crisped on BBQ), quiche etc.
Personally I think people would prefer less but better quality meat - so one chicken skewer with veg rather than two tinned sausages etc.

CatVester · 11/08/2026 17:50

In my experience of catering for big groups of people, they always eat less than you think they will oddly. Especially if not sitting at a table.

That isn’t a normal appetite, whether two sausages or two hot dogs.

Agree. That's a huge amount of meat for one meal.

No, I’m not bothered about the cost. I don’t want mountains of leftovers like I usually have though.

Get extra burgers and sausages. Only cook them if necessary. If not used then put them in the freezer.

It really is very common to barbecue hot dogs of this type.

Those pictures are not the tinned or jarred "hot dogs" that we get in the UK. They look like proper "wurst" sausages or American "weiners". They also look minging, and I don't know anyone in the UK who would eat them, when we have proper sausages available and fridges to store them in.

OP, I think you're on to a winner. You clearly don't want to spend effort or money hosting, and you're making sure that you'll never have to again, as future invitations are going to declined after this shitshow! Nothing says 'You're not welcome' more than cheap, shit food and a host who can't be bothered.

aburrsir · 11/08/2026 17:51

I think burgers are enough but I’d add on another pack or two of sausages - lots of people like 2 in a bun!

also I suggest that while you “pre-cook” the chicken, don’t serve it cold! Bung it on the bbq for 5 mins when everything else is basically ready :) people generally prefer things like that hot!

Velvera · 11/08/2026 17:52

I love hot dog sausages.

backformoreofthesame · 11/08/2026 17:52

To be honest of you will eat meat why wouldn’t you eat it all?

hot dogs are for me a very occasional treat - unhealthy but once a year they taste real good

unless you are hosting some people who clearly have problems with food , just ignore the greedy guts in here

DuckyLuck · 11/08/2026 17:53

Wow! Everyone’s a critic! I had no idea that people felt so strongly about someone else’s BBQ!

OP - I always over cater and under eat and am quite picky at other people’s food but I think your numbers and changes all sound fine! When it’s gone, it’s gone! I would perhaps just add some extra bread (French sticks perhaps) and maybe a rice salad.

It must be an extremely sad life you are leading.

Seriously though another point to consider is how long the event will last. Most BBQs go on for hours so people don't demolish two burgers and two sausages at once but rather eat one of each, drink loads and then eat some more.

Thanks. I’d be mortified if I ran out so I don’t want to underserve but just don’t want to waste loads of food like normally happens.

It starts at four and people can stay as long as they like, but I won’t be sober enough to light the barbecue again once the food is cooked. I’ve got nets for the flies and then I’ll take the food that needs to be refrigerated inside after people have finished helping themselves, and let them know they can get whatever they want from the fridge for the rest of the night.
