Frying pans and saucepans.

Hi, this is a world that I don’t understand. Apparently lots of frying pans and saucepans have unsafe, toxic surfaces. I need to replace my set of mixed makes of pans as they are all old and worn out. Can anyone please recommend some good sauce pans and frying pans that won’t stick, are safe to use and don’t cost the earth. I’m thinking maybe two sizes of frying pans, maybe two sauce pans and hopefully not more than £150 all together. If there are really good ones that are a bit more money I could buy a couple now and a couple in a few months. Thank you.

Scoville from Asda do the job.

3wheels · 11/08/2026 12:57

I’ve just looked them up, such good value!!

Stainless steel for saucepans, cast iron for frying pans and woks - they will need to be seasoned and washed with care, enameled cast iron for casseroles and baking dishes (I understand Le Creuset is a decent brand). People were cooking long before the invention of teflon.

I do not rate the scovill ones. They take for ever to heat up. And I disliked the texture

I've got stainless pans (prestige?) had them decades. They come up lovely if I do manage to burn something. Plus it doesn't matter if someone uses a metal implement.

My frying pan is just a random non stick pan that I get whenever I need a new one (scratched surface etc).. Never spend more than £15 or so

I dont have aluminium pans and never have. Because of the leeching .

Tried cast iron but too heavy for me.

CherryPieToday · 11/08/2026 13:42

Very expensive, but I have a giant Le Crueset stainless steel saute pan and it is so good - was so surprised how different it was to cook on. I'm going to gradually replace my frying pans with these as they wear out.

mbonfield · 11/08/2026 13:45

We use two 28in Tefal wok pans for all our frying needs excellent value at about £30.00

Hayley1256 · 11/08/2026 13:47

Stellar do really good pans! I have the Stainless steel ones and love them. I've started buying younger family members a set when they buy their first home.

I can't remember the brand of my frying pans but they are casr iron. I avoid any non stick pans as they have that horrible coating

knottywig · 11/08/2026 13:50

I have had scoville and it was ok to start off with (but had to have highest heat on when cooking (induction hob))but then everything started to stick. I’ve have a Blackmoor one I bought from Amazon on prime day , which was marginally better than scoville. Last one was a tefal one which was brilliant to begin with, we hand washed it (much to my chagrin), bought the spontex tefal safe scourer when things started to stick but now it’s crap, everything sticks!
I just want a nonstick pan that stays none stick for longer then a couple of months!

Coldnorthwind · 11/08/2026 13:53

We have a cast iron frying pan from Netherton Foundry - it's great, it needs a bit of care in its treatment but it really develops a non stick surface without all of the extra chemicals.

MissyB1 · 11/08/2026 13:57

Look at Pro Cook, their pans are excellent.

Bizkibee · 11/08/2026 13:58

I took advantage of daughter going off to uni to give her our pans and upgrade. I have Procook "professional" line saucepans, stainless steel. Haven"t braved stainless steel frying pans yet, I understand the key is to get it really hot before you add the oil (so water beads dance across it) but my induction hob instructions said don't heat empty pans so I haven't made the leap.

3wheels · 11/08/2026 14:58

Thanks, I’m going to look these up. I’m cooking on gas (literally!! Haha) so I don’t have to worry about induction pans. It’s the tefal coating that’s worrying me nowadays so I think I want to avoid that.

Vision glass.

Ilovemyshed · 11/08/2026 15:00

Le Creuset - 3 ply stainless are a good weight and heat evenly.

Totally agree re the Scoville and Tefal pans. I’d like a non stick frying pan that lasts. My daughter loves scrambled eggs and I’m not sure I can cope with her using a stainless steel frying pan. I’m imagining a lot of stuck on eggs and having to scrub it clean.

minipie · 11/08/2026 15:11

As far as I can tell nobody has yet come up with a non stick frying pan that is non toxic and lasts. Loads get rave reviews, and then they die after a few months maybe a year with kid gloves treatment.

I use a combination of:
Le creuset enamelled cast iron - for “saucey” meals (also doubles as oven casserole pot). Cheaper brands like Chasseur are good too

Cast iron flat griddle - for searing meat, veg that benefit from some browning (courgette, aubergine), also anything that won’t stick too much like tomatoes

Steel wok - for stir fry/ other fried veg that don’t need to brown

Non stick pan - for eggs, pancakes and anything else that sticks horribly. I have a ProCook, it’s not bad but I know it will die quite quickly

Stainless steel saucepans - for cooking in water so pasta, potatoes, rice, veg, boiled eggs etc. Ikea 365 are perfect

Wouldn't buy Scoville again, nothing special, and i dropped one 6 inches from the bottom cupboard onto vinyl floor and it bent out of shape.

Scoville from Asda do the job.

Had mine for a few years but they’re now peeling and sticking. Going to upgrade to stainless steel as tired of having to replace non stick pans.

ScottBakula · 11/08/2026 15:23

I have copper bottom prestige pans , they are my DMs and easily 35 years old and still going strong.
I have a 7" frying pan that I am sure only cost a few pounds from woolies that's great for eggs, and other sticky food.
My most recent purchase was about 5 years ago a cast iron duch oven made by logic, it is very heavy and the handles get incredibly hot but it's absolutely brilliant to cook in.

macaroon8 · 11/08/2026 15:26

Stellar are the stainless steel pans I have ( think I said prestige earlier) must have had them 30+ years. They still look like new, even after so many decades of poor cooking skills .

I have three pans + a steamer. Which is generally enough. I've also got a massive stock pot which is also stainless steel, but just a random make and infrequently used.

They were my mum's leaving home present to me and my siblings. As far as I know they are all in daily use.

HarrietSchulenberg · 11/08/2026 15:30

I have the stainless steel ones with the stainless steel lids from Ikea. I have had no problems with them, and the large saute pan is my main frying pan. On the rare occasions when something has stuck, I heat a cm of water in it and it just lifts off with a wooden spatula.
I also have a well seasoned cast iron pan but tend to use the Ikea pan more as it's deeper.

Myotherrideisabroom · 11/08/2026 15:32

We use Scoville pans, they're really good quality and don't scratch like normal non stick pans do. Keep checking Asda as they often reduce the price of the boxed sets of pans

M and S stainless steel ones are fantastic. I’ve had mine around 30 years now and still as good as new

@Lizchapman same here. My M&S stainless steel ones are also around 30 years old and still going strong.
