What's your favourite bread to make?

I've got a batch of dough on the rise now, just for plain white bread, nothing fancy. I like It's simplicity though.
It's nice to be able to take a few basic ingredients, and then turn it into something tasty and useful.
I also like the idea that you are following the same basic ritual humans have been doing for thousands of years.
I sometimes make a sweet bread, or seed bread, or a coffee bread like pulla.
If you bake, what's your favourite type to make? Just cause I'm nosy!

I love making wholemeal bread, either in the bread maker or by hand. I add milled nuts and seeds and ground almonds for extra protein etc and then feel happy when my kids eat it! It also tastes great, a bit more substantial. Sometimes I use the dough to make pizza bases too.

Irish brown bread as you just mix the ingredients and plop it in the tin and into the oven it goes. No proving or kneading or waiting around.

Linetree · 10/08/2026 18:22

My favourite is wheaten bread, a wholemeal soda bread from the North of Ireland. It takes no time to make and stays moist for days, plus is really tasty. Probably not technically bread though.

Cheesy bread with italian herbs and sundried tomato...😋

Another vote for Irish soda bread. Very simple to make and the family love it. This is my effort…

Focaccia! Really simple and yummy.

McSock · 10/08/2026 18:55

Faves are focaccia and fougasse - topped with oil, olives, sundried tomatoes and oregano then when hot out of the oven a drizzle of oil and sprinkling of salt

hahabahbag · 10/08/2026 18:55

Focaccia mostly, so easy, cinnamon and raisin bread on timer too

ToadRage · 10/08/2026 19:01

My husband makes lovely poppy seed rolls. We have a lot of soup in the winter cos it is cheap and I have a soup maker so he makes rolls to go with the soup.

Theyreeatingthedogs · 10/08/2026 19:07

My fave homemade is wholemeal sourdough with caraway seeds.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 10/08/2026 19:09

Sundried tomato bread

whippersnapper55 · 10/08/2026 19:12

For picnics I make a kind of chelsea bun with sundried tomatoes, cheese, chopped salami as the filling, it's yummy! I often make a sundried tomato and parmesan bread too which is lovely with homemade soup.

Is that the same as soda bread?

DewDropsAndCobWebs · 10/08/2026 19:57

It's almost out of the oven, and the house smells so good! I sometimes wish I could bottle the smell of fresh baked bread...or brownies...or pie, well any tasty baked goods really!
Maybe not a perfume, but a scratch Nd sniff, or air freshener thingie

Another vote for soda bread here. So easy, no bread maker or proving or any faff needed. Throw in the dry, add the wet, bring it together quickly, plop it out, make a cross and then pierce the corners to "let the fairies out" and job done.

I make a few loaves on a Sunday when the oven is going, and freeze in thick slices. White soda, brown soda, cheese soda, even with currants and raisins - the white one. And of course real salted butter preferably Kerrygold or the M+S one with salt crystals can't remember the name now.

So that's my favourite!

Missey85 · 10/08/2026 20:12

Banana bread 😊

Didimum · 10/08/2026 20:29

I make sourdough every weekend. I like it plain mostly, but also love a Parmesan and black pepper one.

I made Japanese milk bread a while ago and that was really nice.

Me and DH were just talking about making bread today as we have never made any. Yours looks delicious, could you let me have the recipe please? Many thanks.

We’ve got a sourdough starter on the go just now so it’s a currently a favourite 😂

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 10/08/2026 20:53

I made rye and orange bread yesterday, which is lovely.
Usually I do half white flour and half wholemeal but every now and then I do something a bit different.

That sounds delicious.

My favorites to make are oat and rye, but I tried a cheese jalapeño loaf that came out good and I'll make again. I use a bread maker, fantastic in the summer because it doesn't heat up my kitchen but will sometimes finish off in the oven in winter.

That soda bread looks delicious.

You’re welcome to it. Hope you enjoy it. I buy the 500ml size buttermilk in Tesco. I’ve only been able to find 300ml size in other supermarkets.

250g plain white flour
250g strong wholemeal bread flour (I use Allinsons)
100g porridge oats
one teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
one teaspoon salt
25g butter in pieces
450 ml buttermilk

Preheat oven 200c/gas 6/ fan 180c
line tray with baking sheet and dust with flour.
Mix dry ingredients in bowl and rub in butter.
Pour in buttermilk and mix together quickly with a table knife.
Bring dough together lightly with fingertips handling gently on a floured board.
Shape into a round approx 20cm/8 inches diameter.
Place on baking sheet and score a deep cross.
Bake 30-35 mins till bottom sounds hollow when tapped.
Cover with a tea towel while cooling to prevent crust becoming too hard.

Enjoy!

PS the leftover 50ml buttermilk makes a few lovely pancakes 😊
