Is your council run pool like this?

Today, my daughter was at a pool party at the local leisure centre and the changing room stank of wee. Then, looking at the floor there were dried, yellow puddles. This is a very recently built pool!

Is this a thing at council pools?

I thought the faeces part was made up! But perhaps if you have little kids and a swimming pool...

My local council pool seems to have a closure every month because of faeces in the pool.

I suspect it’s down to inadequate swim nappies, because they have a lot of sessions aimed at babies and pre-schoolers.

No kids were involved. It was a communal pool (I don't live in the UK) It actually gets worse the more I describe the incident as measures had to be taken 💩🤮

Used to be. Then it was rebuilt - about 10 years ago and has since not smelled of wee.

This is the thing. The pool looks so nice from the outside because it is quite new. But the changing rooms clearly are dirty.

Nope, the changing rooms of my council leisure centre are spotless, there is always someone going around cleaning them when I'm there.

They do have the occasional code brown where the pool has to be shut for 24 hours.

I was once in the pool when a child vomited. I've never seen the staff move so quickly trying to contain the vomit and evacuate the pool.

BringBackCatsEyes · 09/08/2026 04:04

The floors are cleaned regularly, but the nappy bins often stink. On reporting this I was told an outside agency is responsible for them and there was nothing they could do.

Stressedoutmummyof3 · 09/08/2026 04:14

There's no excuse. The lifeguards and matinence team are regularly cleaning the floors at our local pool. In fact if anything I'd say they over clean the floor.. They certainly don't ever smell of piss or have dried yellow puddles on the floor.
Presumably though it's made clear to the staff that they have to do cleaning when they start. I'm not sure if they have actual cleaners at the pool or if the lifeguards do it all.
If other pools don't insist the staff clean the floor then I can imagine they would be disgusting but it must vary from place to place.

I can’t think it is adults - it’s probably non-potty trained children.

erm, adults are just as bad as children. My DCs are lifeguards and have spent a lot of time around pools prior to that.

Adults piss on the floor in changing rooms??

What’s it got to do with it being a council pool? Regardless of the operator I’m sure if someone reported it to a member of staff it would get cleaned up

I saw number 2s floating in a kids pool in center parcs once

Sadly, it boils down to councils being bankrupt and this sort of thing being the first to be cut.

And to people no longer having any respect for themselves, others or their surroundings-all aided and abetted by the "Don't Judge" brigade.

WoollyandSarah · 09/08/2026 11:37

Ours is outsourced to a private chain. Under the first private chain, the changing rooms stank of wee. With the latest provider, the smell is gone, but the arrangement of sessions is much worse, so we've stopped going.

Summerlovingtheraspberries · 09/08/2026 12:25

Who are these scrubbers?
Seriously if your child cannot control their bladder then they should be in nappy pants.
Some people are just scrubbers thought. Look at the amount of people who think it’s fine to throw cigarette butts on the floor.

I think the council are cutting corners on the cleaning teams.

The changing room I’m taking about clearly hasn’t been cleaned for weeks, I would say. It is a very very big changing rooms (village), more like the size of Center Parcs than say a health club. I was walking quite some distance, trying to find an area where the floor wasn’t yellow.

interestingly, the entrance (where the staff work) was spotless.

IME it’s not just children….

There are flies flying around the drains in our local one 🤮

and not just at council run pools sadly.

Nameshavebeenchangedtoprotect · 09/08/2026 18:22

I was at a local council pool once, the changing room was heaving but there was a gap in one place. I went over to use that space and realised the gap was there because there was poo on the floor...

Latenightreader · 09/08/2026 18:27

No, and I swim in one of three local council pools at least twice a week. I have once or twice smelt wee, but it has tended to be related to a nappy bin and was gone when I was there the next day.

stichguru · 09/08/2026 18:30

How many puddles? I mean honestly piss stinks. Only take one toddler to have a accident and a parent not notice and that could be the whole changing room easily!

OhBotherSaidPoo · 09/08/2026 18:31

Mine had semen on the walls.

itsgettingweird · 09/08/2026 19:06

Yes ours does.

However there are not puddles of pee and they are always cleaning it.

I think it’s a crappy drainage system.

WoollyandSarah · 09/08/2026 19:23

One council sports centre near us had a jacuzzi (posh area), with a sign next to it asking people not to shave there. Not sure if people were shaving in the shower next to the jacuzzi or in the actual jacuzzi. Neither is a pleasant thought.

WoollyandSarah · 09/08/2026 19:26

And the once a monthish reminder on Facebook by the leisure centre not to go swimming if you are unwell, always ends with "the pool will be closed until the end of the day".

We once went to our nearest leisure centre to find the pool closed due to some sort of contamination, but thought we'd drive on to another town instead. 20 minutes into our swim, there was a code brown and that pool had to be closed too.

They just leave the used nappies in the changing rooms instead...

THisbackwithavengeance · 09/08/2026 19:40

I live in a “naice” town and our council pools are clean and well run and the clientele respectful. But yes, I can imagine in a rough area, it’s different. But you’re not allowed to point out on MN that some people are disgusting filthy skanks who would allow their kids and possibly even themselves to piss and shit everywhere.
