And would it be a good test of "Britishness" whatever that is ?

I see stories like this, and my first thought is almost never "What would Rupert do ?"

Yes. They used to do them on Croydon High Street on Good Friday. Whipping Jesus carrying a cross etc. Not sure if they still do

Tiltedd · 08/08/2026 16:26

Yes I do.. it’s a play about Jesus’ crucifixion where people essentially recreate the crucifixion in the street. I only know this because my mum is a Vicar

Cuwins · 08/08/2026 16:27

Yes but only from a very old fashioned children’s book

VivienneDelacroix · 08/08/2026 16:28

Of course. Do adult people not know? Philistines!

BirdLandedonmyHead · 08/08/2026 16:28

I do.

But they atent "British" are they? One of the most famous (indeed maybe the most famous) is in the Alps.

RaraRachael · 08/08/2026 16:29

Yes. My mother and her friend went to the one in Oberammergau that's held every 10 years.

HeCouldNotWouldNotOnABike · 08/08/2026 16:29

Yes, we went to watch them in secondary school.

MirandaWest · 08/08/2026 16:29

I know about them through the Chalet School books. And I don’t think they are particularly British - the most famous one is in Oberammagau in Germany,

I see the article linked to is over 12 years old - am guessing there was some training after that.

ExtremeDecluttering · 08/08/2026 16:29

Yes, there's still one local to us

JustSmiling · 08/08/2026 16:29

Yes, they are not exclusive to Britain.

Pericombobulations · 08/08/2026 16:32

RaraRachael · 08/08/2026 16:29

Yes. My mother and her friend went to the one in Oberammergau that's held every 10 years.

My mum always wanted to go to one of these but think she has missed her opportunity

trumpredcard · 08/08/2026 16:33

Yes, I do know what a Passion Play is, but why do you think knowledge of it is a suitable test of Britishness?

As only 37% of the UK population identifies as Christian and not all Christian denominations have passion plays, not knowing what it is would be the better 'test' imho.

HollyGolightly4 · 08/08/2026 16:33

Another one who knows them from the Chalet School!

EmmaOfNormandy · 08/08/2026 16:34

So 11 answers in from people who were all better candidates for the job than

THE council officer who told Cowley Road Passion Play organisers to cancel their event

then ?

If you just said "Passion Play" to me I wouldn't have known but I worked it out from the photo.

I've never seen one or heard of one happening near me I've seen photos of them in the news sometimes around Easter but in other countries.
I am not religious though and was brought up in a very none religious family so maybe it was just never on my radar.

Edited to say that me and all my ancestors are British.
Did I fail the Britishness test?

ThreeYearsOut · 08/08/2026 16:35

Yes, I do. I have attended in Spain as part of Santa Semana

Me too! If done properly it causes sensitive schoolgirls to faint.

Wouldn't the people who answer be more likely to be those with knowledge of it?

LlynTegid · 08/08/2026 16:36

RaraRachael · 08/08/2026 16:29

Yes. My mother and her friend went to the one in Oberammergau that's held every 10 years.

I went in 2022 to see it. Wish my German had been a bit better and that I had been a bit more adult about the camel dung on stage.

MissyB1 · 08/08/2026 16:36

I’ve always wanted to go to the Oberammagau one after reading about it in the Chalet School.

Self selection is a phenomena to be wary of. But that is a ground rule anyway, surely.

I found the story amusing more than anything. My eye was caught by the photo - basically wtf is that doing in a newspaper !?!

Dokushozanmai · 08/08/2026 16:42

but yes I know what a passion play is. A mystery play is probably more standard British (or mummers). The chalet school has a lot to answer for.

orangehandles · 08/08/2026 16:43

My eye was caught by the date of the newspaper in which you saw the story. 2014.

ShanghaiDiva · 08/08/2026 16:45

Yes, I do as I have visited Oberammergau.
