Do you know what a Passion Play is ?

And would it be a good test of "Britishness" whatever that is ?

I see stories like this, and my first thought is almost never "What would Rupert do ?"

Council officer apologises for Passion Play mistake

THE council officer who told Cowley Road Passion Play organisers to cancel their event has apologised for his mistake.

My eye was caught by the date of the newspaper in which you saw the story. 2014.

LOL - I'm still getting the hang of feeds it sees.

There used to be one at our primary school but I have forgotten what it is. Something to do with Jesus or Easter?

Cuwins · 08/08/2026 16:27

Yes but only from a very old fashioned children’s book

Chalet School?

OreganoandFeta · 08/08/2026 16:50

Yes, like others on this thread, I read about it in the Chalet School books as a child and I actually went to the Oberammergau one with my mum. It sounds like there might be scope for a Chalet School thread! 😀 Edited to add that I don't think it would be a particularly good test of Britishness as it is a Christian tradition held in many countries.

Octavia64 · 08/08/2026 16:55

Yes but they are hardly common.

OtherS · 08/08/2026 17:00

Yeah, I went to the Oberammagau when I was kid. Too young to remember much about it though. Don't really think of them of a British thing, though I believe there was one, or something similar, in London this year which was apparently rather gruesome. I'm not sure I actually relish the idea of more public religious events, so rather hope they're not becoming more common. Or if they are, that they're tucked away so we don't find ourselves accidently stumbling across crucifixions as we amble round town!

EmpressaurusKitty · 08/08/2026 16:55

Thank you very much @EmpressaurusKitty !

RaininSummer · 08/08/2026 17:07

Yes.

Whynottryagain · 08/08/2026 17:07

Yes, my RE teacher in the 90s wanted to go to Oberammergau. I admit I haven't heard offer any in the UK before though.

ComtesseDeSpair · 08/08/2026 17:16

I’ve seen one, though not in the UK so wouldn’t have assumed there was anything particularly British about it; but have never heard the phrase Passion Play and had no idea that they had a name beyond “reenactment of the story of Jesus’s death.”

So 11 answers in from people who were all better candidates for the job than

THE council officer who told Cowley Road Passion Play organisers to cancel their event

then ?

Surely that's not his only job though? Just because you know what a passion play is isn't a qualification for the job of a council planning officer! As for a test of Britishness, they aren't British. They happen here but mostly happen in Catholic Europe.

Arlanymor · 08/08/2026 17:30

I don't know now and I wouldn't have known about it in 2014 which is when that newspaper article is from... over a decade ago!

I do however know lots about Mari Lwyd which to my mind - having heard a bit now from posters about passion plays - sounds a lot more entertaining. We were doing The Pwnco before rap battles were even a thing!

Pascha · 08/08/2026 17:32

I knew through the Chalet School book which I must've read aged about 10 in the 1980s.

It reminded me that my sister played Isaac in the Mystery Plays at our local cathedral at about the same time. She would have been about 13 and the only thing I remember is that Marius Goring played God. I just found her name amongst an online archive of the play programme.

I feel old now.

ErrolTheDragon · 08/08/2026 17:32

I know what they are. Parents did a coach trip to Oberammagau. Not really sure of the full backstory here - if other street theatre would have needed permits and been cancelled by the council if they’d not been applied for, then I don’t see why a a religious one should get a free pass. Confused

This article is 12 years old. Not sure why you are bringing this up now.

TheOnlyWayIsIlford · 08/08/2026 17:34

That news report is from 2014.

Yes, I know what a Passion Play is. I am not remotely religious. But I have a broad education.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 08/08/2026 17:36

I know, and I'm not particularly interested in them. I know they're not a peculiarly British thing.

JustGiveMeReason · 08/08/2026 17:38

Yes. I went to see one in my home City a few years ago. But I'd heard of them before.

However, not sure how you are equating this to Britishness though, as the most famous one is in Oberammergau.

Ilovecheeseyah · 08/08/2026 17:40

Yea the most famous one is in Oberammergau Bavaria
well worth seeing

As a few people have kindly pointed out I'm still getting the hang of how to look at stories in my feed.

Clearly I'll have to up my game.

Me too! If done properly it causes sensitive schoolgirls to faint.

Yes!

dizzydizzydizzy · 08/08/2026 17:41

i connect ‘passion play’ to Bavaria. There is a world-famous one in a place called Oberammergau every 10 years.

deeahgwitch · 08/08/2026 17:41

Yes. Isn’t there a famous one in Oberammergau ?

Popstarrrrr · 08/08/2026 17:42

Yes, I've seen one in both the UK and Cadiz in Spain. I'm not sure they're particularly British though.
