I just found this on youtube. Amazing. Thank you ❤️

Me too... super voice

StressyMcStressFace · 08/08/2026 17:50

Its on my playlist of my favourite songs. Loving the love on this thread 💕
🎶 Take! My hand!🎶

This was one of mine and OHs songs (Soft Cells version obvs) when we met. Bit of an odd one really but no harm done, still together over 40 years on!

Purplecatshopaholic · 08/08/2026 17:59

The 12” Soft Cell version is one of our favourites. Partner and I are having it at our wedding.

Such an amazing voice. Saw Soft Cell for the first time only a few years ago at a festival and he still sounds beautiful. My favourite songs are Frustration and Bedsitter (and Sex Dwarf - which we all, in our innocence, thought was so naughty!!!)

I think he's a bad singer when judged against standard measures.

But that's what makes that song, and Tainted Love etc, so incredibly poignant and moving. It's the failure, and all the other failures it conjures up, that's so resonant. It's a small voice 😪.

Oh!! I’d forgotten about Bedsitter!
I associate all of these with being young, full of hope, a long life ahead of me..

Now 55 and Say Hello, Wave Goodbye is one of the best songs to sing in the car - lyrics are clear, no mumbling or ambiguity Grin just pure genius story telling evocative angst.

I haven't listened to that song or that album for many years so THANK YOU for the reminder! It's a spectacular song ❤️

Can't bear David Gray's version I'm afraid. Too earnest, and sucks all the arch campness out of it

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 08/08/2026 19:10

Being sung by a gay man gives it a different twist. I always heard it as him going out with her as a front(it was the 80s) and this was the last ditch attempt at making people think he was straight. But everyone knows and hes miserable.Shes trying to be the perfect partner .And he despises her for it. And blames her for his unhappiness.

Really? Its about a horrible rejection.

Oh we know that. It’s one of our favourite songs, we sing it to each other in the house, and I guess we both have a weird sense of humour…(plus we’re old and don’t care) lol

Alucard55 · 08/08/2026 20:42

A lot of people saying they don't like David Gray's version. I think when you listen to the White Ladder album as a whole it's a really good ending.

Although if you don't like that sort of music you wouldn't be listening to the whole album 😂.

You are sooooooo wrong !
His voice has changed as he has aged but he is still pretty wonderful .
He has never been a bad singer , i wonder what you consider standard measures to be .

thestudio · 09/08/2026 12:14

He doesn’t sing in tune - but that’s not a criticism. Lots of singers don’t. In his case it absolutely adds to the pathos.

Lottapianos · 09/08/2026 12:51

Thanks to this thread I watched the Hootenanny 2001 performance, having not heard the song in years. It's a great song, with some very witty and cutting lyrics. They're pretty misogynistic too though!

'Youre used to wearing less'
'A nice little housewife who'll give me a steady life'
'Ill find someone who's not going cheap in the sales '

Women do not come out of this song well!

Thanks that's the line I couldn't remember.
Me in a suit
And you in a cocktail dress

David Gray's Tainted Love (live) is the best cover I've ever heard. Joyous.
