Why can't you sleep?

I can't sleep because sadly my little dog passed away this afternoon. This is my first night in bed without him, the house feels so empty and quiet. Why can't you sleep?

So sorry for your loss 😢 💐

I can’t sleep because I did my stupid usual thing of taking a nap too late 🙄

Somewhereovertherainbowwewillmeetagain · 07/08/2026 03:34

@Pieceofpurplesky so sorry to read why you are awake at this time of nigh. I really do hope that you are doing ok and getting better. Do you know I actually don't 100% know the signs. I remember from Just 17 magazine years and years ago but haven't kept up over time.

Thank you for your kind words. I hope your sleep cycle can get on an even keel soon. A nap is lovely though it always feels indulgent to me.

So sorry about your pooch op.

Can't sleep as I'm on the newborn night shift with my 3 week old. DH did 8-2 (though an 11pm nappy blowout meant I was awake) and now she's with me. 3 wakes and 1 nappy so far....plus the swaddle has gone astray so only managing to settle her on my chest. Putting her down in the cot not happening in the slightest 😅

Luckily not my first baby so I know this is a fleeting phase and as such I'll just enjoy the snuggles. Have Mumsnet and a good book!

@Autumngirl5 Elvis and Murphy are excellent dog names ❤️

Raccoonsmacaroons · 07/08/2026 03:46

I have a hospital procedure in a few hours and the prep has been unpleasant. Crashed out for a couple of hours earlier but it woke me up again about 3am and here I still am.

I’m so sorry about your dog @Somewhereovertherainbowwewillmeetagain . We said goodbye to our 15yo dog a few months ago and it was devastating.

Somewhereovertherainbowwewillmeetagain · 07/08/2026 03:47

Thanks @lemoncurdcupcake oh congratulations on your new baby. You sound like you have a sound plan in place after a restless night. Take it easy and try to grab some rest whenever you can.

Gosh sending strength and peaceful vibes to all the people undergoing medical treatment, feels like there are a fair few of you. Hope you can switch off and rest super soon xx

Thanks @Raccoonsmacaroons so sorry for your loss, does things get better with time? Sorry to read about your prep and I hope your procedure goes well.

So thankful for the company tonight, thanks everyone. I honestly didn't want to switch my light off without Murphy here beside me. My eyes are closing now so going to try and get some sleep. I hope you can all rest tonight Flowers

So sorry you have lost your dog, it’s heartbreaking I know. Take it easy over the coming weeks.

i have been awake since 1:38, up for the loo, then loo again, I have MS and my sleep is so bad, been referred for my bladder this week, but I usually wake due to spasm, needed the loo or side effects of my disease modifying therapy. So used to lack of sleep now.

lemoncurdcupcake · 07/08/2026 04:02

Sleep well OP xx

@Somewhereovertherainbowwewillmeetagain
For you and all other posters - symptoms
of ovarian cancer. I knew nothing - had some spotting and was waiting for an appointment when I suddenly felt like I couldn't swallow - could not take tablets as they all got stuck. A week later I was told I had a rare type of
ovarian cancer. I was lucky - so many women with ovarian cancer are not listened too which is why most cases do not get caught until Stage 4. The type I have can appear in your 20s - it's so important.

I’m so sorry for your loss, OP. I can’t sleep without my two if I have to go away.

We actually have 3, but one likes her own bed.

Our dogs are all rescues, and when we lose one, we usually look for another after a short while, because we think that the dog we’ve lost would want us to give another dog a chance. It doesn’t stop us missing that particular dog terribly, but it makes us think we’re doing something positive in their memory- if that makes sense?

I hope you got some sleep eventually. Your vet was very kind to come out; I suspect that made things easier for both you and Murphy. 💐

Somewhereovertherainbowwewillmeetagain · 07/08/2026 21:09

@NormasArse that does make sense and it's so kind of you to give dogs a loving home. I managed to get a few hours sleep, then jumped awake with grief. Today has been really tough, I just miss him so much 💔 we went to pick up his ashes today so he's back home now.

Sorry for your loss OP - pets are such a huge part of the family and leave a big hole when they leave us. Be kind to yourself and grieve in your own way.

Last night of our holiday today and all week the poxy gulls have woken me up at 5am every day so I'm longing for my bed tomorrow night.

clearlyy · 07/08/2026 22:56

I’m so sorry for your loss :(

I can’t sleep because my brain won’t let me. I find it so difficult to fall asleep it takes me hours and I’m so exhausted every day. Have nightmares and sometimes sleep paralysis. I just want a good nights sleep and to not wake up 4 times through the night every night, even if I take a sleepeeze. Always up at 7am even on weekends and can’t get back to sleep. I’m very active every day and just can’t rest. No wonder I was diagnosed with adhd this year at 30, my brain just doesn’t shut up ever. I’ve not ever had a time where I felt rested.

Somewhereovertherainbowwewillmeetagain · 07/08/2026 23:14

@Yellowsubmarine55 thanks and that's so true. You must be exhausted! Hope the gulls give you a rest in the morning, nothing like your own bed.

@clearlyy so sorry to read about your sleeping problems. Can they prescribe you anything to help you sleep?

Unfortunately no because I haven’t been for a sleep study. I probably should, what with my sleep paralysis. One day it might work itself out! I’m in bed now, was shattered on the couch but now I’m wide awake.

Somewhereovertherainbowwewillmeetagain · 08/08/2026 00:31

@clearlyy I hope you get some sleep tonight and you should ask for a sleep study.

Back tonight. Still no sleep. I’m feeling so wrung out. I’ve had severe period pain all day - so bad I’ve spent the last couple of hours wondering about going to a&e because it’s never felt like this, and what if it’s my appendix etc etc. None of my normal stuff painkillers have touched it. Big perimenopause energy, suspect I’ve developed endo or ando.

If I was at home I would have just taken myself there by now, to be better safe than sorry, but we’re at a holiday cottage and we’re leaving at 8am tomorrow so I just want to get home now. It’s been a pretty rubbish week all told.

I’m sitting up on the sofa here under a duvet, trying to get a tiny bit of sleep because it hurts to lie down properly.

I just want to get home now. It’s been a rubbish week all round. If I still feel this bad when we get near home I’ll get DH to drive me to our nearest a&e

Obviously if I get even worse in the next 4 hours I’ll just have to call someone, but that would be such a ballache. I really hope the painkillers just finally kick in/ the hormones ebb, and give me some peace
