Why can't you sleep?

I can't sleep because sadly my little dog passed away this afternoon. This is my first night in bed without him, the house feels so empty and quiet. Why can't you sleep?

I'n so sorry! I hope you find some comfort from giving him a great life.

Somewhereovertherainbowwewillmeetagain · 07/08/2026 01:07

@EconomyClassRockstar thank you Flowers the vet came out to the house and thankfully it was all very peaceful for him.

Not a pet owner but do admire the devotion shown by many pet owners
Sorry for your loss

KitTea3 · 07/08/2026 01:14

I'm sorry for your loss 😞

I can't sleep cos for some reason I can't our my phone down and stop scrolling bloody Mumsnet. Also I have big important stuff I need to deal with tomorrow and subconsciously I think my brain feels the longer I put off going to bed ....well basically once I go to bed I sleep and then wake up and have to deal with it so I think I'm in some ways procrastinating going to bed cos my stupid brain somehow thinks it will delay the inevitable?! 😩

Somewhereovertherainbowwewillmeetagain · 07/08/2026 01:20

@JesseDavisGonnaHangOnInThereNSoul thank you. Pets really do steal your heart and soul.

@KitTea3 thanks
Sorry you are going through this. Have you tried finding a cosy mumsnet thread and reading it in bed? That usually helps me fall asleep. A thread like... do you remember when? Type of thing.

Sorry about your dog, ours died in January.
This is my normal bedtime.

Somewhereovertherainbowwewillmeetagain · 07/08/2026 01:48

@mondaytosunday I am so sorry for your loss. I hope you are doing ok Flowers are you a natural night owl? I am usually asleep by now but in all honesty I will do whatever it takes to get through this.

Because I am on Mumsnet, doing research and offering probably not very useful nuggets of tips to people.

Oh this is very intriguing 🤔 can I be nosy and ask what sort of research on mumsnet ? I bet your tips are good and if not for tonight's thread people then probably future thread readers.

So sorry to hear this. I dread the day mine goes. He’s 4.5 and I adore the bones of him!

I dropped off briefly earlier, then jerked awake as I’d been dribbling on my pillow and it was all wet and cold and then my DH was breathing on me and snoring and now I’m just wide awake and have been for 2 hours……..

Frannieisnthappy · 07/08/2026 02:11

Im so sorry to hear about your dog. What was his name?

Im awake as had a very fraught GP appointment today. Im going to complain but am ruminating on how women's health just doesn't seem to be prioritised in the NHS. The GP I saw today was so dismissive and did not listen to me. Am so fed up as it means it will be weeks before I get the treatment I need to just feel slightly better.

WhatNextImScared · 07/08/2026 02:20

Dreadful anxiety. Away on holiday and my DD has a bad graze that isn’t healing well. She’s had a reaction to the plaster glue and now have better plasters but noticed this evening there’s some tiny spots on her skin a few cm from the wound. Therefore terrified about sepsis.

There is no basis for this. She is absolutely well in herself, fast asleep and despite the adhesive reaction redness/roughnesss, the actual wound site doesn’t look bad and though it has been wet it is shrinking daily. I am just paralysed by anxiety at the moment.

Therapy isn’t helping this much, though very useful for other things. Perimenopause and day 1’of period so hormonal plunge is probably the real cause. I have really become a pathetic person that I tire of.

my DD will be fine but I’ll probably still try to find a pharmacist tomorrow to have a look.

Sorry you are all awake too. I’m glad to feel a little less alone here. My DH is oblivious gently snoring beside me. We’re supposed to be having a big beach day tomorrow

I’m sorry to read this… can you pay to see a women’s health doctor privately? Some of my friends say it’s the best money they’ve ever spent and if you pick one who works inside and out the nhs they will cross refer you into their nhs clinic if you need ongoing treatment

@Theheatishot try not to worry and just enjoy each day having a lovely life and making memories. One thing I would advise is buying a note pad or journal and every now and again making notes of just simple day to day life with you and your dog Flowers I hope you can get back to sleep and cuddle into your fur baby.

@Frannieisnthappy his name was Murphy. Sorry to read why you are awake at this time and I hope things work out fine for you. Your experience sounds horrible I hope you are ok Flowers

@WhatNextImScared that's a heavy load you are carrying. Please be gentle with yourself Flowers have you tried washing the area with hot water cooled with salt in it or a epsom salt bath? Pharmacy tomorrow sounds sensible to rest your mind. Try and get some sleep to enjoy your beach day. Actually see water would help the area also. * please don't take my thoughts as gospel, this is just things I do for me and my family.

I’m so sorry about your little dog, OP. I adore mine (Elvis) and he is 12 now so precious.
I am wide awake planning what to do tomorrow but will probably be too exhausted to do anything now! Honestly … life!
Sending hugs to everyone x

Aww that made me laugh. I know what you mean about life! Try and get some sleep and have you tried chatgbt or Gemini to sort out these things for you? Honestly it's a total game changer in life.
Give Elvis a massive hug. Murphy was 12 also.

I can only imagine what it’s like to lose Murphy and I hope you are not on your own.
I’ll try to sleep now so wish me luck! You get off to sleep too and know that I will be thinking of you. x

There is no pain like the loss of our beloved dogs or cats OP, I'm so sorry. I dread the emptiness so much and to this end, have always got another when the first is about 4/5yrs. Tonight, my 'emptiness filler' of a young Labrador, joined in the chase of a (squirrel, magpie, or crow) with my older Newfoundland and launched herself over my garden wall into the horses field on the other side. She's very athletic and I thought she may be able to jump back with the assistance of me/ladders/a plank ... to no avail. It's about a 6ft drop 🙄. After both her and the horses freaking out, I eventually got some assistance from a horse owner and had to drive down to the gate to collect her. Of course I needed a large glass of wine to calm myself down after that. And now I'm wine-awake... hope you get some rest soon ❤️

DoAWheelie · 07/08/2026 03:13

My thyroxine dose was increased so it's making me hyper awake for around 18-20 hours followed by crashing out for 12 hours.

It usually lasts about 10 days each time the dose goes up and I'm only on day two. I've given up all hopes of a normal sleeping pattern for the next couple of weeks.

Gosh that sounds exhausting. Is there any way to avoid that roller coaster?

Crumbs sounds like you had a very lively night. Glad you are all home and settled in now. I can understand your large glass of wine to steady the nerves. I haven't had wine since the pandemic days and have tonight drunk a full bottle to myself. Thank you hopefully I can get some rest soon.

@SomewhereovertherainbowwewillmeetagainI am so sorry to hear about Murphy. They steal our hearts, I hope you manage to get some sleep.
@Frannieisnthappyplease fight to be heard. It is so important - I hope
you get answers, I have been very lucky (see below)
@WhatNextImScaredits normal to Be anxious when our kids hurt. She will be fine, you will still panic next time she does something - it's what we do!
I hope everyone else gets some rest.

I am not sleeping as I had chemo today and the steroids keep me awake for hours. Please everyone know the symptoms for ovarian cancer (and others) and make the doctors listen.

Sorry to read about your sleeping problems. I've seen a mixed bag on the magnesium some love it and unfortunately some say it does nothing for them. Yes let's hope that we can all get some sleep tonight.
