Kemi Badenoch says he deserves a second chance. Would you want him on your council?

I don’t believe in redemption. He has that cast of mind.. he’s an extremist and an antagonist. Perhaps she wanted to have someone very off kilter in her party, to match the lunacy that is the Green Party accepting Zach.

it levels the playing field.. no party is free from dimwits and lunatics.

How would the recruitment of a neo nazi anti semite bring her level with a party led by a (admittedly dimwitted) Jewish man? I don't follow your logic.

I’m in this area and any alternative to the current useless, Lib Dem council leadership is
welcome.

What? Even Joshua Adolf Bonehead ? Blimey!

Good, he's stepped down (though Conservative staffers will now get the joy of working with him directly...)

Not a bad day when you go from would be councillor to special consultant to the Tories. The way he has handled this 'difficult situation' must have really made an impression on Badenoch.

Kemi has just gone right down in my estimation.

Totally this. I'm not a Tory voter but I admired Kemi, not anymore after this. I really don't believe there is not a better candidate.

SwedishEdith · 05/08/2026 18:07

She would never have heard of him 48 hours ago but she dug herself into a corner because non-Tories have scrutinised his past. She has created this drama herself. Such very poor judgment.

Is that Badenoch's way of saving face? She doesn't have to apologise or admit she got it wrong.

It is very strange indeed.

I imagine so.

but looks as if she knew who he was and decided to employ him anyway she's going on about redemption and shit like that and it's just like no this is not who we want to vote for

NeverDropYourMooncup · 05/08/2026 18:14

Fuck me, he's going to have access to some very sensitive information there, isn't he?

MushMonster · 05/08/2026 18:14

Nope, I would not want anyone like him anywhere near government or any position of power or influence.
Yet, here we are. Why and how have come to this?

Yeah, the redemption stuff is bullshit. She should have nipped this mess in the bud as soon as she heard about him. Who would even want to work with him?

"But Reform UK hit out at Badenoch's decision to offer him the adviser role, with a spokesman saying it "beggars belief" and was "alarming news for the Jewish community in Britain".

You know something's a bit screwy when Reform has higher standards than your own party...

She has made herself look worse!Presumably she didn't personally select him as a candidate, so she had some distance. Now she has spent 24 hours batting for him and has directly offered him a job.

Has she decided she doesn't want to be leader any longer?

I'm not sure having alleged links to Russia with its history of anti-semitism is higher standards, just Reform seeking to jump on a bandwagon.

Reform is no measure of decency in public office.

Bloody hell. Although Farage believes in worse, or has done.

I've read his statement. He said he left Reform to join the tories. He also said that Reform wanted him to stand.
The whole thing is weird. None of it makes any sense.

LoveItaly · 05/08/2026 18:53

No I wouldn’t want someone like that. But I also don’t want someone tried and sentenced for corruption in another country sitting in Parliament (Tulip Siddiq) or convicted for fraud by misrepresentation (Louise Haigh). The whole UK political scene makes me sick, frankly.

Wut?

OK, I've just found this article by Oliver Dean, the assistant editor of Conservative Home, who is not impressed at Badenoch's support for Bonehill-Paine. Dean thinks Luciana Berger should have been the Tories' first port of call:
https://conservativehome.com/2026/08/05/i-believe-in-second-chances-but-not-for-neo-nazis/

The article links to this Xwitter post where Bonehill-Paine claims Reform asked him to be their candidate (though as the comments point out, this may have been a generic email at the stage where he'd expressed interest in standing for Reform but they hadn't yet vetted him).
https://x.com/CrewkerneMan/status/2084381552583094744?s=20

I believe in second chances - but not for former neo-Nazis | Conservative Home

Again, I reiterate that I am all for second chances. But there comes a point in which one cannot extend the generosity of yet another attempt. Bonehill-Paine - I believe -, despite what he has done since being released, crossed that point of no return
