Kemi Badenoch says he deserves a second chance. Would you want him on your council?

A man with short, coiffed hair, and a short ginger beard is smiling at the camera. He is wearing a blue suit and tie.

Tories offer Jewish groups meeting with ex neo-Nazi activist candidate

Joshua Bonehill-Paine was jailed over neo-Nazi activism, but has been selected to stand in a new Somerset Council seat in 2027.

I saw this this morning. Stupid decision by the cons.
We really don't have decent people representing and working for us anymore do we? Just the fact he wasn't thrown out in the trash is beyond me.

BitOutOfPractice · 05/08/2026 13:35

How can Badenoch stomach standing up for this man?

it only confirms that she’s a “if you don’t like my principles, I have others” sort of politician.

It certainly shows a shocking lack of judgement by her.

Im sure Reform will have him. They seem very comfortable with ex cons.

perhaps she thinks if I can't beat them I'll join them. Braverman would welcome him into Reform

I couldnt believe this when I read about it - I saw his antics first hand before he was stopped as I knew one of his other, many, victims. He was prolific - he came across as extremely unwell at the time.
It took an extremely long time and many offences before he was given a custodial sentence.
I really thought he's never appear online again but it looks like he couldnt resist a comeback. Thats what really concerns me - he wasnt prepared to lie low and do good works in the background...

Yowch. So you probably know more than has come out in public, @GrimDamnFanjo .

Yeah, no lying low for Bonehill-Paine. Wanting a stage seems to be one of his traits.

This is a reason I'm not yet fully convinced by his supposed reformation. The opportunity to go round lecturing on anti-semitism and being the centre of attention sounds like something which would appeal to him in itself.

It will bite them in the bum.

I incline to giving a pass to adults on their teenage fuckery, to a lesser extent early 20s fuckery depending on the type of fuckery. I’ve also seen first hand the postive impact of rehabilitated extremists (and criminals in general) in countering those views amongst young men/teens susceptible to the same messages. If he is genuine and successfully doing preventive work for eight years I can see why an organisation or public body might employ his services.

But - with that level of offences, continuing into his 20s its too soon to be standing even as a lowly councillor. If he were ten years older with nearly 20 years of good prevention work behind him then maybe.

I do have differing expectations for low office vs high office.

Yes, all of this.

Apparently he’s been cleared by the home office to re-educate others now on anti semitism .

Yeah this is bollocks. He was put on HII as part of his probation. It's the Home Office's de-radicalisation programme. It's not like he had a choice.

Badenoch saying he was "cleared" by the Home Office on the radio this morning is a complete joke. This guy could not ever achieve even the lowest level of security clearance given his convictions.

MissyB1 · 05/08/2026 14:03

I’ve never trusted Kemi, she’s always struck me as having a nasty streak. And now I know I was right, if she thinks this vile man is worthy of being in her party then that tells us everything.

Candleflakes · 05/08/2026 14:05

He hasn’t rehabilitated, no one is stupid enough to believe that.

Whatever he’s up to it’s just an act.

TemperanceWest · 05/08/2026 14:09

I just don't understand Badenoch in all this. It is really odd.

He must have done though - he found God while he was inside...

Nope!

And I have Braverman as an MP so the bar is already set pretty low 🤣

I agree. She's usually quite sharp on the issues. This is just so obviously going to backfire on her, what was she thinking of? Bonkers.

Maajid Nawaz, I was think about him too in this context.

Yep, was thinking about him as well. If someone has a personality that tends to easily be radicalised, I think they can pivot to other extremes as well.

There was no need to ever defend him. He simply should not have been a contender. By all means, allow him to speak in schools (under supervision) about the dangers of radicalisation or something. But he doesn't need to go to the next step of influencing local policies etc.

Another reason he shouldn’t be allowed to be a candidate, he’s delusional.

I am sure I have read previously that her insinct is to run towards fights instead of away from them.

I sympathise with this personality trait - it is one that I share (!) - and of course it has its benefits, but sometimes such an instinct can lead one astray.

It might be that they are short of people to stand. It's a big commitment so it's not like all the voters for a party will be willing/able to stand as councillors for them and the conservatives have been losing support quite a bit especially to Reform. So maybe that played a role as well, I'm not sure...
Or they saw he had an online presence and wanted to benefit from that. Which isn't in itself a bad tactic politically but it's different when the guy was a neo-Nazi.

Darragon · 05/08/2026 14:42

It’s all a bit ‘vampire working in a blood bank’ really. I mean, if someone was caught with their hand in the till and jailed for it, they shouldn’t become an accountant. If someone was caught selling organs on the black market and jailed for it, they shouldn’t be a doctor. And if someone was a neo nazi and jailed for behaviour relating to it, they have no place in politics. It should be the most basic dealbreaker for entry into the job.

Tralalalalatata · 05/08/2026 11:41

I find it very weird that CCHQ has not stepped in (let alone allowing him through the Parliamentary candidate assessment process to begin with) but has instead doubled down.

Perhaps this is one of the ways in which Kemi is looking to become more Reform-like in terms of dodgy candidates and vetting processes?

He is standing as councillor in the county council, not Parliament. Kemi Badenoch has dismissed the idea that he could be troublesome at local level by saying he will only be dealing with bins, etc. That conveniently misses out education, social services, housing, etc,. etc. that local authorities deal with.

Wanting to appeal to the woman hating neo Nazi contingent of the internet isn't a good tactic for anybody who isn't a woman hating neo Nazi.

Reckon the Green Party comment is more due to worries about what's in the back stories of some of theirs, too. 'But the Conservatives accepted a literal Nazi and that was fine!'.

countrygirl99 · 05/08/2026 15:03

Given her attitude to redemption presumably Kemi would be happy with a repentent convicted sex offender working in her kids school. Yes?

BIossomtoes · 05/08/2026 15:05

Given her attitude to redemption I assume we’ve heard the last of Haigh’s phone.

Yes the remit for local council is high. It's not just potholes.

Adult Social Care is the main chunk of all councils.

Education and SEND us next.

He should not be standing. But he obviously loves the attention, no matter how negative that might be.
