The government are stuck between a rock and hard place regarding early prison releases.

Let me stress I’m not in agreement with prisoners not serving full/ adequate sentences

However I’m not sure what the answer is

  1. build more prisons or expand the prisons already there- there would be outcry. No one wants a prison near them or the prisons getting bigger
  2. review who should be sent to prison and for what in the first place- again there would be outcry

I just think there is no easy answer

Surely the answer is to build more prisons? 🤷‍♀️

Are you volunteering your town for that?
And volunteering to pay more taxes to fund it?

What about the prisoners that are on legacy sentences for stealing a mobile phone and still inside 20+ years later. They should be released before rapists and muderers

Or maybe make prison what it should be, an unpleasant experience not to be repeated?
its a social experience these days, catching up with fellow criminals, meeting new ones, getting told it’s against your human rights to be bored, you must be given education, entertainment..

Have you ever been in prison? Education is necessary because some will have missed out on school for reasons maybe beyond their control. Many prisoners have gone on to keern useful skills, pass exams, degrees even, in prison and hopefully come out more able to contribute positively to society. Entertainment is necessary to keep control and avoid bored men rioting.

I don't believe prison is a holiday camp.

Next door to your house then. Is that ok? Not that what you say isn't true but it can't be done quickly.

I agree we should prioritise early release and deportation for foreign nationals. Even if we have to pay for them to be taken and imprisoned in their own country. They should be deported and if they are captive it should be easier. The grooming gang members are exempt from the scheme but how many of them should be deported on release? If they should be, just do it earlier. Also agree with releasing women who are in for minor issues and convert winds to male prisons.

What if their country of origin won't take them back? Like Britain refused to take Shamima Begum back.

This is what I mean. I can see why successive governments have kicked the can down the road with regards prisons.

This would be great but you then need people to staff them and that's not easy looking at current staffing in prisons.
