πŸ€” Ukraine has begun receiving three times fewer anti-ballistic missiles, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
According to the president, Ukraine’s partners have officially attributed the reduction in deliveries to the fighting in the Middle East.
However, Zelenskyy suggested there could be other reasons.
β€œPerhaps these are political steps intended to make Ukraine more compliant. In my opinion, that is also part of it,” he said

⚑️North Korean missile units will become legitimate military targets for Ukraine's Defense Forces if they are deployed in Russia, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said. [...]
According to the foreign minister, Kyiv is closely monitoring military cooperation between Russia and North Korea and recognizes the risks it poses. Ukraine is also coordinating with its allies, including Japan and South Korea.
Sybiha added that Ukraine is calling for tougher sanctions on North Korea to increase pressure on and further isolate the regime.

πŸ•― Russia continues to attack civilian vessels in the Black Sea. One person was killed and three others were injured, according to Odesa Regional Military Administration Head Oleh Kiper.
β€œThis time, a commercial dry cargo ship flying the flag of Guinea-Bissau and carrying Ukrainian wheat was damaged. The attack breached the vessel’s hull and sparked a fire on board. The crew was evacuated to shore. The injured are receiving all necessary medical assistance,” Kiper said.

πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ώ Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov has arrived in Kyiv.
During the visit, he is expected to hold bilateral meetings with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and other senior Ukrainian officials.

πŸ”₯ Ukraine’s drone campaign against Russian refineries is producing results: Russia has increased its gasoline imports from Belarus to a record high, according to Reuters.
In July alone, Belarus supplied Russia with 212,000 tons of gasoline and 162,000 tons of diesel fuelβ€”nearly double the volume delivered the previous month.

πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ Germany could become a Patriot missile assembly site for Ukraine, Reuters reports.
The United States is continuing discussions with Ukraine on the possible production of Patriot interceptor missiles or their components, despite President Donald Trump's recent public reservations about transferring the technology.
One option under consideration is manufacturing individual components in Ukraine, followed by final assembly in Germany.
However, even if an agreement is reached, the first missiles are not expected to be delivered for at least a year, meaning Ukraine will remain dependent on supplies from its allies in the near term.

πŸ›’ The cost of shipping Russian oil to India has increased by 50%, a development that could reduce Russia's export revenues, according to Reuters.
The agency reports that the increase affects Urals, Russia's main export-grade crude oil. Freight rates began rising sharply in mid-July.
Traders attribute the surge to higher global shipping costs and shipowners' reluctance to call at Russian ports because of the risks in the Black Sea posed by Ukrainian attacks.
According to market participants, the cost of transporting a 100,000-ton shipment of oil from Primorsk to India on an Aframax tanker has risen from $8–9 million to about $13 million since mid-July. Meanwhile, shipping a 140,000-ton cargo from Novorossiysk on a Suezmax tanker has increased from $10 million to $15 million.
According to Reuters, the higher freight costs could reduce Russia's oil export revenues by at least $5 per barrel.

Live: Ukraine Telegram Highlights

Ferrexpo, one of Ukraine's largest mining companies, has temporarily halted iron ore production.
This concerns the operations of the Poltava and Yeristovo mining and processing plants. The reason is the threat of Russian attacks near Ukrainian ports, which has made it more difficult to export products via the Black Sea.
Currently, Ferrexpo is supplying its European clients from existing stockpiles. A return to operations depends on additional funding, ore prices, energy costs, and the maritime export situation.
The company also reported that a cargo of iron ore pellets from a vessel damaged by Russia in the Black Sea may not be lost. The vessel has been towed out of the danger zone and is being brought to port for technical inspection.
The production halt has also helped postpone the threat of bankruptcy until mid-September 2026.
β–ͺ️Ferrexpo is a Swiss-based company with assets in Ukraine that produces iron ore pellets for the global steel industry. Prior to February 2022, it was the world's third-largest exporter of pellets.
β–ͺ️On July 28, due to maritime export problems following Russian attacks on vessels carrying metal products, the Southern Mining and Processing Plant also suspended operations.

⚑️European and Russian representatives held an informal meeting in Vienna to discuss conditions for peace talks, Bloomberg reports.
Around the table were former senior officials from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Russia. The meeting was organized by the Swiss Center for Humanitarian Dialogue.
Such contacts are not official β€” participants merely exchange ideas, which may later be passed on to governments.
According to the agency, the three largest European countries, together with Ukraine, are attempting to establish direct contact with the Kremlin. Meanwhile, one of the top advisors to European Council President AntΓ³nio Costa has been trying to set up a separate channel of communication with Moscow, but so far without success.
At the same time, it is unclear whether Putin is willing to speak with European leaders at all. Bloomberg notes that Moscow still considers the US β€” not Europe β€” as its primary interlocutor.

Polish volunteer Marek Rusek-Wolski was killed in a Russian attack on Kharkiv.
His death was announced today by the spokesperson of Poland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Since 2023, Marek had been administering the Facebook group "Razem dla Ukrainy," where he regularly organized fundraisers for humanitarian aid. He personally delivered aid to Ukraine, distributing it to residents of settlements near the front line. The volunteer also assisted with the evacuation of the deceased.

[yesterday]
The Russian attack also destroyed warehouses of PUMA, INTERTOP, NOVUS, and LIQUI MOLY in Ukraine.
πŸ”΄PUMA reported that its logistics complex was completely destroyed. The team is safe, but due to the loss of stock, certain brand products may face shortages in Ukraine in the coming weeks or months.
πŸ”΄INTERTOP also confirmed that its main warehouse with products was completely destroyed. The company is already working to restore supplies.
πŸ”΄The logistics center of the NOVUS supermarket chain sustained several direct missile strikes β€” no casualties were reported.
πŸ”΄The Russian strike destroyed the central warehouse of LIQUI MOLY, which supplies motor oils to Ukraine. The company reported the loss of tons of products.
β–ͺ️During the same overnight attack, Russia also damaged warehouses of Epicentr, Silpo, Rozetka, and Nova Poshta. In total, at least 10 company employees were killed in the Russian attacks.

Overnight, Russia launched 101 strike drones and four missiles at Ukraine β€” two Onyx and two Kh-31P. Air defense neutralized 66 drones.
However, 29 drones and one Onyx missile struck 18 locations, with debris from downed targets falling in five more places. The other missiles missed their targets. Here is what is known about the aftermath in the regions:
πŸ”΄Kharkiv region. In Balakliia, three people were killed in Russian strikes; Russia also struck an agricultural warehouse three times. In Lozova, a drone attacked a railway station β€” two people were killed and eight others injured, some in serious condition.
πŸ”΄Sumy. Over eight minutes, Russia dropped eight guided aerial bombs on the city. Twelve people were injured. Residential areas, a shopping center, five stores, three private houses, five cars were damaged, and hundreds of windows were shattered.
πŸ”΄Zaporizhzhia. A Russian drone struck an apartment building. Four people were injured; a man is believed to be trapped under the rubble.
πŸ”΄Kherson region. An FPV drone struck a bus carrying workers in Komyshany. Six people were injured β€” they sustained blast injuries and concussions.
πŸ”΄Odesa region. Russia struck a civilian vessel in the Black Sea again. One person was killed and three others injured. The target was a cargo ship flying the flag of Guinea-Bissau, carrying Ukrainian wheat. The vessel's hull was damaged, and a fire broke out. The crew was evacuated to shore.

https://understandingwar.org/research/russia-ukraine/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-august-5-2026/

Key Takeaways

  1. Russian President Vladimir Putin reshuffled military commanders, including those associated with logistics and Russia’s Unmanned Systems Forces (USF), against the backdrop of Ukrainian strike campaigns that these services have failed to defend against.
  2. Russian forces launched a relatively small strike package against Ukraine on the night of August 4 to 5 nonetheless causing significant civilian damage and casualties due to Russia’s use of ballistic and quasi-ballistic missiles that Ukraine was unable to intercept.
  3. Ukrainian forces did not intercept any of the 28 missiles that Russia launched overnight, as Russia continues to purposefully exploit Ukraine’s depleted stocks of anti-ballistic missile interceptors.
  4. North Korea has escalated its involvement in Russia’s war in Ukraine, reportedly deploying missileers and over 100 ballistic missiles to Russia.
  5. The addition of more North Korean missiles to Russia’s arsenal will likely allow Russia to intensify its ballistic missile strikes against Ukraine in the near future without having to dip into its S-400 and Zirkon missile stocks.
  6. Unspecified actors likely piloted a drone containing explosives at Germany’s Leipzig/Halle Airport, a known hub for transporting Western-provided military equipment to Ukraine.
  7. Ukrainian forces continued their long-range strike campaigns against Wildberries warehouses and Russian oil infrastructure on August 4 and 5.
  8. Ukrainian forces recently advanced in the Kostyantynivka-Druzhkivka tactical area and Slovyansk and Oleksandrivka directions on August 4 and 5.

Journalism always takes a mental toll. Reporters often deal with traumatic events, footage, and testimonies β€” it is built into the job. In Ukraine, that trauma hits closer to home. Our journalists live through the attacks and then report on them to the world.
We are resilient. But we are not unbreakable. In the first year of the full-scale invasion, 93% of Ukrainians surveyed for one study reported at least one mental health issue at a moderate or severe level. That was year one. We are now in year five, and the pressure keeps growing.
This is why the Kyiv Independent is raising $68,000 to fund a full year of mental health support for our entire team β€” so the people who live through this war and report on it can keep going. The funds raised would allow us to cover therapy costs for a full year and continue providing this support as the team expands.

UNITED24 Media Telegram summary of possibility of Russia's potential for limited attack on NATO country

⚠️ Russia could launch a limited attack on a NATO country as early as this fall, according to new U.S. intelligence assessments cited by The Wall Street Journal.

The scenarios considered by U.S. intelligence officials range from a cyberattack on a NATO member or the deployment of unidentified armed groups to seize territory to a limited invasion of NATO’s eastern flank.

The most extreme scenarioβ€”a limited ground invasionβ€”is considered unlikely but increasingly plausible, according to the WSJ’s sources. Such an attack has long been viewed as unlikely because it would trigger Article 5 of the NATO treaty, which provides for collective defense.

According to U.S. intelligence estimates, Moscow could potentially launch an attack sometime between this fall and 2029.

The U.S. assessment changed earlier this year. Washington previously believed Russia would avoid provoking another conflict while the war in Ukraine continued. However, U.S. officials now fear that Vladimir Putin could become more dangerous as Russia struggles to consolidate its gains in Ukraine and faces growing pressure at home.

If Russia were to attack, the goal would be to split NATO, according to the report.

The new assessment has also renewed concerns among U.S. officials about shortages of ammunition, interceptor missiles, radar systems, and air defense artillery. The Pentagon, however, has rejected reports of a U.S. ammunition shortage.

The Pentagon and NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe declined to comment on the classified intelligence. A spokesperson for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence did not respond to the WSJ’s request for comment.

UNITED24 Media Telegram Highlights

⚑️Ukraine expects to achieve key results in ballistic missile development and the FREYJA anti-ballistic program by 2026–2027, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
The president announced that a meeting had been held on the development of Ukraine’s ballistic missile program and the implementation of the FREYJA anti-ballistic initiative. A timeline and those responsible for accelerating key areas have already been identified. [...]The meeting also covered access to critical components, localization of production, and cooperation with partners, particularly regarding PAC-2 and PAC-3 missiles. Zelenskyy said he expects the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense to deliver results in negotiations with international partners.

πŸš€ Ukraine's FP-7 ballistic missile is expected to make its first combat launch as early as this fall, Reuters reports.
According to the outlet, the missile is currently undergoing codification by the Ministry of Defense, a process expected to take another two to four weeks.
The FP-7 has already completed around 15 test launches.
Meanwhile, the larger FP-9 ballistic missile is expected to make its first flight over Russian territory in late autumn.

❗️Russian military enlistment offices have begun mass-sending summonses to men under the pretext of "clarifying information," according to Russian media.
Formally, the summonses request updates on an individual's address, employment, marital status, or health. In practice, however, recipients are reportedly pressured to sign a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense.
Bashkortostan is reportedly one of the first regions where the practice became widespread.
Those who ignore the summonses may face restrictions on leaving the country, blocked vehicle registration, and temporary suspension of their driver's licenses.
According to Ukrainian intelligence, the Kremlin is preparing for a new wave of mass mobilization this fall, immediately after the State Duma elections. If Russia takes this step, Ukraine will also have to increase mobilization.

From Mariupol to Chonhar: SIGNUM puts one of Russia's key supply routes under fire control.
The route, a major logistics corridor for Russian forces and a key section of the so-called land corridor to Crimea, is now within the strike range of SIGNUM drone operators.
According to the unit, attacks on the route have significantly disrupted the delivery of personnel, ammunition, and fuel, turning what was once considered a "safe" supply line into a dangerous bottleneck.

πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ͺ A Swedish court has ruled that the Russian "shadow fleet" cargo ship Caffa, detained in March, can be handed over to Ukraine, Reuters reports.

πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ Germany’s largest airports are being urgently equipped with anti-drone systems, according to DW.
Eight of the country’s busiest airportsβ€”Frankfurt, Berlin, Munich, DΓΌsseldorf, Stuttgart, Hamburg, Leipzig, and Cologneβ€”are being rapidly outfitted with modern counter-UAV systems.

πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ A foreign state may be involved in the drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport, Germany's Interior Ministry says.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described the August 5 incident as "a new level of danger" and evidence of a professionally executed hybrid operation.
A UAV carrying a detonator was found near a Ukrainian An-124 Ruslan cargo aircraft, and investigators are treating it as a possible explosive device. Dobrindt said that foreign states seeking to destabilize Germany could be behind the incident.
NATO confirmed it is aware of the case. Ukrainian Ambassador Oleksii Makeiev directly blamed Russia, saying:
"Who else could it be if not Russia?"
Leipzig/Halle Airport has served as a base for the Ukrainian cargo airline Antonov since 2022.

⚠️ The Ukrainian cargo aircraft near which a drone carrying explosives was discovered had been loaded with ammunition, according to Süddeutsche Zeitung.

πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ Germany’s Foreign Ministry has denied reports that the Ukrainian An-124 cargo plane, near which a drone carrying explosives was found at Leipzig/Halle Airport, was loaded with ammunition, according to DW.
The absence of weapons on board was explicitly confirmed during a closed briefing in the Bundestag attended by members of the Interior and Defense committees.

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ The United Kingdom has imposed sanctions on 12 more companies, one individual, and six vessels linked to Russia.
The UK Foreign Office said the new measures target Russia's financial, energy, and industrial sectors, as well as its oil and liquefied natural gas exports.
The sanctions cover Ozon Bank, Roseximbank, Center-Invest, Realist Bank, Stavr, and TelePort Bank. Alexander Zhdanov, the owner of the chemical company Siltron, was also added to the sanctions list.
The companies Metalkomplekt, Nikom, Promsiz, and Technolux were also sanctioned. In addition, the restrictions apply to six vessels, including the LNG carrier Arctic Express and the tankers Perseas, Torvian, Asteras, Visund, and Zenturo.

πŸ‘€ Colombian drug cartels are reportedly trying to send members to fight in Ukraine to learn how to operate FPV drones, according to the Financial Times.
The publication reports that criminal groups are seeking to gain experience with attack drones on the battlefield and later use those skills against the Colombian military.
According to the report, the Ukrainian military has identified several Colombians linked to organized crime and sent them back.
The Financial Times notes that drones have fundamentally changed the nature of the conflict in Colombia in recent years. While the military previously dominated the airspace, cartels and rebel groups are increasingly using drones to attack security forces and are seeking to master more advanced technologies developed during the war in Ukraine.

⛽️ Amid a fuel crisis, the Russian government has authorized the production and sale of lower environmental-grade gasolineβ€”K2 to K4 ("Euro-2," "Euro-3," and "Euro-4")β€”until July 1, 2027.
The decision was announced on August 5 by Russia's Ministry of Energy via Telegram.
At the same time, the government revoked an earlier decision that had allowed the sale of K5 gasoline with a higher sulfur content through the end of 2026.
The ministry said fuel stations will be required to clearly display the environmental class of the fuel being sold. Officials described the measure as temporary and part of "anti-crisis measures" aimed at balancing fuel quality requirements with the need to ensure sufficient fuel supplies for consumers.

Live: Ukraine Telegram Highlights

πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡ΊThe European Commission has responded to President Volodymyr Zelensky's statement that partners have refused to provide Ukraine with additional anti-ballistic systems.
European Commission spokesperson BalΓ‘zs UjvΓ‘ri stated at a briefing in Brussels that Ukraine itself determines its defense needs and can submit relevant requests to the EU, including for interceptor missiles.
UjvΓ‘ri noted that the European Commission regularly receives new requests from Ukraine and processes them "as quickly as possible."
When asked about possible obstacles to transferring interceptor missiles already available to individual EU countries, the spokesperson said he was "not aware of any problems."
β–ͺ️According to President Zelensky, in the first half of 2026, supplies of air defense missiles to Ukraine from partners decreased threefold compared to last year. The official reason given to Kyiv by partners was the fighting in the Middle East.

The strike on the Yaroslavl oil refinery damaged four RVS-2000 tanks containing crude oil, causing a spill, the SBU reported.
Two of the tanks are on fire. The attack also damaged the ELOU-1 and AVT-3 processing units, which caught fire. [...]
In Crimea, a Ukrainian strike also damaged two Project 10410 (Svetlyak) patrol boats of the Russian FSB Coast Guard β€” the Balaklava and the Kerch.

Overnight, Russia attacked Ukraine with 147 drones. Air defense neutralized 114 of them, but 29 UAVs reached their targets in 15 locations, with debris falling in four more.
Here is what is known about the aftermath in the regions so far:
πŸ”΄Sumy. The Russians struck with guided aerial bombs and drones. Two people were injured. Private houses, non-residential buildings, vehicles, and infrastructure facilities were damaged.
πŸ”΄Dnipropetrovsk region. The enemy attacked the Kryvyi Rih and Nikopol districts. A private house, a post office, and a gymnasium were damaged. No casualties were reported.
πŸ”΄Zaporizhzhia. Russia damaged an office building, where a fire broke out. No casualties were reported.
πŸ”΄Kherson. The Russians attacked civilians with drones twice. First, they struck a vehicle in the city center, injuring two people. Later, a drone attacked a 66-year-old man β€” he sustained a blast injury and shrapnel wounds.
πŸ”΄Kharkiv region. Enemy drones struck an agricultural enterprise in the Volokhovo-Yarsky starostyn district. After two hits, warehouses caught fire. No casualties were reported.

The Russians attacked people with a drone at a market in the Bilopillia community of Sumy region.
Currently, 10 people are reported injured, two of them in serious condition. They are being hospitalized.

Former US Marine Robert Gilman, who has been held in Russia since 2022, is near death after beatings and torture, his lawyers and sister told Reuters.
Gilman was detained in January 2022 in Voronezh. Russian authorities accused him of assaulting a police officer while intoxicated and sentenced him to 4.5 years in a penal colony. The sentence was later increased to 10 years after he was charged with assaulting colony staff.
Since late June, the 32-year-old American has been in the hospital in a stupor-like state, according to his lawyers. He cannot communicate, does not respond to external stimuli, and is being fed through a tube β€” making him unable to participate in court proceedings.
Gilman's family claims that in the Russian colony, he was tortured and forcibly administered mind-altering drugs, which they say caused his sharp deterioration in health.

This was my first thought that Russia was involved. Even if they turn out not to be, I am sure we will always suspect them to somehow be involved in things like this.

@MagicFox I’m a couple of days late checking in, thanks for the new thread as always.

So sorry @Mb76, it’s awful to hear, and to keep hearing.

agree re first thought. All this talk of Russia as a β€œdisruptor” really underplays the inhumane evilness of the regime
