What do you do with your luggage when flying?

Inspired by another thread...and as its holiday season...

Are you a cabin bags only or prefer everything in hold luggage? Does it change depending on why your flying? (Im hoping the poll posts by the way)

Me personally I am a hold luggage person irrespective of why im flying. I cant stand trying to get through a busy airport with a cabin bag plus a handbag. I travel a lot for work and colleagues get irritated as I always put luggage in the hold.

Or do you take no luggage and wear everything possible at once?

Also the number of times ive used the word luggage in the above has just highlighted to me what a odd word it is.

With kids, we have to take at least 1 hold bag. Pre-kids, usually managed just cabin bag, unless hold bags were included anyway.

I pack light, and hate waiting around for the luggage at the end. Would rather get off and get to accommodation asap. With kids, I use the hold but it's reluctant, just have too much stuff

Octavia64 · 03/08/2026 11:20

I use a wheelchair.

i get whooshed through security and passport control. Usually quick through.

always hold baggage but drugs go in my hand luggage along with a change of clothes (it’s been lost before)

only time I’ve taken ages was when they lost my wheelchair (temporarily)

Depends where to and for how long. 10 days in Europe DH and I share 1 hold bag, no cabin bags.
4 day city break, just cabin bags.

Culpeper · 03/08/2026 11:22

I can’t do hold luggage only, even for a short trip. I take too many lotions and potions.

MidnightPatrol · 03/08/2026 11:22

I both use hold luggage and book flights at times that are convenient for me…

… that is the new ‘luxury travel’, and I accept I have to pay a premium for it! Makes the whole thing far more
pleasant however.

I think it’s a false economy to avoid taking luggage - I don’t see the victory in managing to make two pairs of pants last a week on a holiday that has otherwise cost £££.

timoteigirl · 03/08/2026 11:22

Surely this also depends on what time of year you travel and Ryanair versus other airline hand luggage dimensions?

Dogdaycommeth · 03/08/2026 11:25

It probably does matter time of year, length of travel etc to some people.

Im still a die hard in that its always hold luggage. I will never again carry a cabin bag through the airport. I will always pay extra for it and factor that in to every bit of travel.

Yeah you aren’t going to get skis and boots and helmet and ski wear into cabin baggage.

we used to drive to ski mostly because we had so much stuff!

principalskinna · 03/08/2026 11:29

I agree if you can't afford to put luggage in the hole and don't fly

You obviously havent met my mother. She could get them into hand luggage with room to spare.

I always claimed that i could never do hang luggage only, used to drive DH mad but since the DC got older its all we do now (apart from 2 weeks AI in a posh hotel occasionally). We almost missed a flight once despite being there over 2 hours before as luggage drop was a nightmare and I love just going straight through.
I can't do the underseat only but I find that even with a small overhead bag I have plenty to wear andf sometimes don't wear some things. the kind of holidays we tend to do mean that we don't need lots of posh outfits anyway so once nice dress is fine.
We also do Fast Track and Lounge now too, really relaxing and not too expensive if bought in a package with parking

Melancholyflower · 03/08/2026 11:31

it depends where we are going/what sort of holiday and how many of us are going. City break then cabin bag per person, but family two week villa holiday then will probably put a couple of cases in the hold to put plenty of suncream/toiletries in. We usually fly BA when going on city breaks and a cabin case is included in the price, rather than just a small rucksack like on the real budget airlines, but it's actually not much more expensive.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 03/08/2026 11:33

Hold luggage for a longer trip, cabin bag for short one. If it's borderline I'd check it in as hold luggage, as I'd rather not lug bags round the airport or onto the plane, out of choice.

Simonjt · 03/08/2026 11:37

If we’re doing a week or less we do hand luggage, longer and we tend to do hand luggage and add one suitcase in the hold.

MiddleAgedDread · 03/08/2026 11:39

totally depends where I'm going, what I'm going to be doing, and what the weather is going to be like!

ChiasMarineras · 03/08/2026 11:46

Backpack only if up to 4 days. Cabin luggage for anything else. I only put a suitcase in the hold if travelling long-haul. Because it usually involves multiple climates and I like to take food with me, especially to N America - hate the food there.

I travel a lot, mostly for work (as in 5-6 flights a month) and yes, I would find you irritating too OP 😂

What is it about carrying a small suitcase through the airport that you dislike? I have a good quality, 8-wheel small Roncato Modo that is ultra light and easy to manoeuvre, lasts for more than 5 years at a time. It doesn’t take much space to roll it next to me, regardless of how busy the airport is.

Bimblesalong · 03/08/2026 11:49

Just done 10 days in S of France hand luggage only (under seat and cabin bag overhead). Fresh changes of clothes each day and plenty of room to bring back the purchases I’d planned. Can’t be faffed with waiting for hold luggage or lugging heavy cases around on trains between hotel locations.

You obviously havent met my mother. She could get them into hand luggage with room to spare.

Not into a small cabin bag on a budget airline she couldn't. However good the compression packing cubes are.

We mostly fly Ryanair or Jet2 and I've purposely bought the following:

A rucksack that fits the 'small' cabin bag size. Good for a day or two at most not because I take endless crap but because I don't want to limit myself with clothes, toiletries and other necessary bits and pieces on longer trips. I don't want to buy a load of toiletries and leave 90% of them behind either.

A cabin size wheelie case that is the maximum allowed on Ryanair but in reality is a bit too small for more than a few days especially for one of my regular autumn/spring European hiking holidays where the temperature could be anywhere between 5 C and 25 C so I need a variety of clothes, waterproof etc.

So I've now just bought one that's slightly bigger, and expandable. So unexpanded, it's good for Jet2 in the cabin but not Ryanair, but expanded it can go in the hold for either and it's often about the same price to put 20 kg in the Ryanair hold as it is to take 10 kg on the plane.

We also sometimes go on Jet2 packages, which include a hold bag as well as 2 cabin bags, so there I'd probably take the expanded hold case and the small cabin bag. It's worth it to me to check the bag so I don't need to take it through security and into the cabin, and 9/10 it's there on the belt by the time I've got through passport control.

So those bags cover all my anticipated needs seeing as I don't travel long haul or stay away for more than a week.

CountessBinface · 03/08/2026 11:55

I don't take a cabin bag as such. Important documents and medication go in my handbag and everything else goes in the hold. Cabin bags are a source of irritation, hold up the boarding process and the system of storing them over people's heads is not particularly safe.

badboss2020 · 03/08/2026 11:55

Always cabin unless I absolutely have to do hold.
would annoy me to wait for someone’s hold luggage on a work trip if it was anything less than a week

Kidsandhouse · 03/08/2026 12:00

Hand luggage only where possible.

But we'll take one hold luggage for our 2 week camping holiday as we like to bring a few bits to make the self catering a bit more practical.

Topseyt123 · 03/08/2026 12:00

I normally go for two, or occasionally three, weeks. I travel one hold suitcase and one small cabin case (overhead locker).

Ilovemyfam · 03/08/2026 12:01

principalskinna · 03/08/2026 11:29

I agree if you can't afford to put luggage in the hole and don't fly

I have done a lot of flights to Uk to visit aged parents. I have a spare small wardrobe in parents house. I begrudge the extra. I do underseat only. I have a rucksack designed for this and it takes so much stuff. My last flight was with a toddler so we took an extra carry on. We seemed to have so much room.

When we repeat that trip in December it will be different with thick clothes. Mid season journeys can challenge too.

MrsShawnHatosy · 03/08/2026 12:01

1 Hold 1 cabin. Prefer to be as unencumbered as possible when negotiating airports.

Little kids pulling tiny trolley suitcases are a serious trip hazard in busy airports.
