What do you do with your luggage when flying?

Inspired by another thread...and as its holiday season...

Are you a cabin bags only or prefer everything in hold luggage? Does it change depending on why your flying? (Im hoping the poll posts by the way)

Me personally I am a hold luggage person irrespective of why im flying. I cant stand trying to get through a busy airport with a cabin bag plus a handbag. I travel a lot for work and colleagues get irritated as I always put luggage in the hold.

Or do you take no luggage and wear everything possible at once?

Also the number of times ive used the word luggage in the above has just highlighted to me what a odd word it is.

When packing your bag for the overhead locker, imagine that hitting you on the head when opening the locker. l hate having to dodge other peoples' heavy cases/bags when walking down the isle. Whilst putting my rainwear/jacket/coat in the locker I don't want someones' case wheels tearing my clothes or smearing them with dirt either. Consider other people's belongings and safety when taking cabin bags etc.

You must have had terrible luck on planes. This has never happened to me or anyone around me for that matter, in loads of flights.

Think you should add other options-for a lot of people, it varies depending on length/type of trip. If I was travelling with someone who had a hold bag, there would be no point me not having one.

I hate packing light. I like to have a choice of clothes on holiday. So I always put my case in the hold. That said, I also hate waiting for luggage on arrival to airports. My ideal would be a flight that you could take your case on, and it would be placed behind your seat. Then you could just take it with you and no chance of lost luggage.

I’m a recent cabin bag only convert. I recently travelled on the first day of the school holidays and got dropped off and through security in under 7 minutes at Gatwick and 5 minutes in Florida.
I went for a week and packed 6 dresses, 2 cover ups, 2 swimming costumes, trousers, 3 tops, 2 shortie pj sets, sandals, 2 bags and looked nice every day.

That stuff isn't supposed to go in the overhead locker on most flights!

Ask the flight attendant: I think you are wrong and have been flying for very many years and recently. Flight attendants see us putting our coats and jackets in there and often help by moving any cases or bags in the way!

AFAIK It's not a hard rule either way but if the crew are struggling to find space in the overhead lockers for bags they might ask for soft items (e.g. coats) to be moved to generate space.

When I've flown in recent years (BA) they've asked people not to put jackets etc. in the overhead lockers to leave them for the cabin cases/bags.

I think you are wrong. If there's space they won't mind you putting them there but when the space has all been sold to people with cabin cases, they ask you to take coats etc out.

minipie · 05/08/2026 00:38

Coats can generally fit in the small space on top of the bags, but they need to be put in last. If you put them in first it’s annoying as then a cabin bag won’t fit in that space.

I use cabin luggage for short breaks and hold for anything else - or any trip with kids even if short.

It is really annoying if just one person in a group has booked hold luggage.

1 x large suitcase in the hold.
1 x carry-on bag.
1 x small handbag.

I couldn't go with less than that. 🤷

DearDenimEagle · 05/08/2026 00:51

I wear mine, plus a handbag..spacious handbag, ipad , knickers , spare t shirt in pockets of my coat. Spare jeans rolled up in shoulder bag . Not away more than 10 days. Can buy extras if needed once there, but usually just wash stuff and hang out to dry.

There was a thread recently by someone who was doing a 2 week trip, with 2 kids with cabin luggage only.

I was half in awe and half aghast.

We are travelling for two weeks soon (5 of us) and we are taking 4 cases to go in hold.

Hidaypopbob · 05/08/2026 07:51

We often do just the under-seat bag. This is ok for 4-5 days if going somewhere warm, I mainly struggle with the liquids even with decanting them all into little containers.

We’ve done two weeks with just hand luggage before, had the larger cabin bags that time. Liquids were still my issue, had plenty of room for clothes but ds reacts to most sun creams so wanted to ensure I had enough of his cream with us and that took up a lot of the allowance. And then I was struggling with all my lotions and potions- would cost a fortune to “just buy it all there” plus then I’d have to leave most of it behind on the way home!

Last year we shared one hold suitcase between six.

This year we are going all inclusive and big suitcases are included! I’m very excited to be able to take everything I want. Although I’ve started packing and I can’t see us needing more than 2 cases between the four of us. I’ve packed 7 day, 7 evening and 4 swim outfits for 3 of us plus beach towels, toiletries bag, medicine bag, and make up bag and we haven’t filled one case. Still need to do shoes and any random items plus dh needs to do his stuff but I’d be surprised if that fills more than one other case. It does make me wonder what people are taking! Although I’m sure I used to fill a case by myself in my younger years I just can’t remember what I took to do so!

But children get their own baggage allowance and their stuff is smaller! So it's actually easier with kids, unless they are under 2.
