Why is Liam Payne seen as good?

I didn’t understand this at the time of his death, and I still
don’t. When he died, and afterwards his girlfriend made statements about how wonderful he was and how much he loved her. But he treated her appallingly by cheating on her and paying for prostitutes. If he hasn’t been in a boy band and wealthy, would people still be saying he was a wonderful partner? He chose a life of drugs and using women’s bodies over being a loving and kind person. I don’t get the love for his supposed ‘kind’ boyfriend traits. He didn’t seem loving to me.

https://news.sky.com/story/lily-allen-i-slept-with-female-escorts-on-tour-11488740 .

Lily wasn't bipolar but she was lonely. So that obviously makes it ok to exploit another woman.

Were these staff members or prostitutes? Still exploitative but slightly different

The latter.
"During the breakdown of my marriage, I was very promiscuous and experimental, and I... had sex with female prostitutes,” she said, correcting herself to say “sex workers”.

And obviously in Lily land different terminology makes it ok.

If he hadn't been in a boy band during his formative years he probably wouldn't have had the issues he had.
A young man who was a father died. It's tragic. I think the stories being run about sex workers and drugs are disgusting. It's so disrespectful to tarnish someone like that after their death and have it out in the public domain for his son and all his sons peers to read.

No one is saying his death wasn’t tragic. It was. No one is saying talk ill of the dead. But if I was his girlfriend and found out he’d dialled for two prostitutes within a day or so of my going home, I wouldn’t be publicly saying he was a great bf and how great the love was. I’d say nothing. His behaviour towards his gf and women generally was cruel and abusive. So at best - say nothing.

When someone dies, if you want to, you can just keep the good parts and let the rest go. They're dead, after all, so you can neither hurt nor help them. It's only for the living.

Netcurtainnelly · 03/08/2026 12:36

He didn't need to go that way did he. The others didn't. Whether he would have been the same if he wasn't in a boy band and nobody knows .

Be careful what you wish for it it was because of his fame with a boyband.

I think there is a sadness with addiction that it took over their life. I don’t think he was seen as good but it was reported he gave a lot of money to charity. No he didn’t treat his gf well and I presume that it was he was no longer with Cheryl. I think the gf has sold her story and made money from being his girlfriend. I think it’s sad rather than anything else.

I was just thinking the same about Ozzy Osbourne @Cheese55was walking through Birmingham city centre today and the hero worship for Ozzy is unbelievable. Lots of people taking photos of the black sabbath bench. His treatment of his family all forgotten! At risk of derailing the thread but wanted to comment re this!

I thought the same too when he died.

I guess because being an addict doesn't necessarily make you a bad person and good people do bad things.

Sartre · 04/08/2026 08:55

I think this was a massive issue with shows like X Factor/Pop Idol as has been widely reported in recent years. You’re taking completely average people, in this case literal children, from “normal” households (in some cases very poor) and shoving them into the crazy world of fame and excessive money.

At their height, 1D were very big and girls were crazy over them. Imagine being a teenage boy filled with hormones and suddenly you’re being paid crazy sums of money and having girls throw themselves at you. It’s really easy to see why many develop issues with addiction and have poor MH. Not just that but every action is suddenly under intense scrutiny and you can’t even go for a coffee without creepy men taking pics of you.

So yeah, it’s sad because he was just a regular lad from the midlands and he likely would still be here had he not gone on the X factor.

You can be an incredibly talented artist and a massive dickhead at the same time.

Ireallycantthinkofagoodone · 04/08/2026 19:43

I always find it odd that people mention MH first, and then suggesting that it can lead to addiction.
It’s really well documented that drug use has a phenomenally damaging impact on the brain, especially in younger people, and is frequently the cause of poor mental health.

Young people, suddenly famous and with more money than they could ever have imagined, will often go off the rails, drinking and experimenting with drugs. It’s often a slippery slope. Many die young. It’s very sad.

However, they can only be ‘helped’ if they want to change. Unfortunately, I suppose they all think they are in control, and that it won’t happen to them.

NerrSnerr · 04/08/2026 19:53

My sister died by suicide in her 30s. She was addled by addiction and in her final year was awful to everyone. Cheated on her husband, her son had to be taken off her because she was sleeping with random men while he was awake and in the house, was up to all sorts of seedy stuff.

Then she died and of course all of that stuff got brushed under the carpet. Mainly to protect her child and our parents. it was terrible enough for them just reminding them of how bad it was just felt cruel.

My mum now has memory problems (also due to addiction) and her reality of my sister’s life is so different to the truth. I am unsure how much my nephew remembers or has been told. It’s just pretty tragic all round.

I would say in response to a previous post it was mental illness that came first for her, and drinking to cope.

x2boys · 04/08/2026 20:01

Well no ones going to say what a terrible person he was
Hes dead he has friends and family and a son that loved him .

Bitolderandwiser · 04/08/2026 20:12

He couldn't cope with the fame at such an early age and it was sad for his family and friends no matter what the public thought of him.
Cheryl is meant to have said he was the only partner who didnt cheat on her .

Someone tell me when you have EVER seen normal everyday people state good riddance, or similar messages when someone dies? Always makes me smile, there's no way that everyone who dies is perfect! lol

I don’t think it’s appropriate to say good riddance when someone dies, but I do think it’s ridiculous to post a narrative publicly online making out someone was a great boyfriend. When they were clearly a terrible one. Just say nothing.

See, with this I disagree, if someone was a total dick in real life, why cover for them? If they caused you pain while they were around they do not deserve to be remembered otherwise

Apricotdog · 05/08/2026 14:48

Money, lust and boredom. He had enough money to not have a 9-5 job keeping him busy, many other wealthy folks similar

Because maybe that person still loved them despite being a dick
Life isnt black and white
When you lose somone you love most peoples automatic responss isnt to slag them off on social media
If you have ever bern to a funeral and listened to the Eulogy it alwys focuses on the positive
" Bill was a much loved father of 3 married to Brenda for fifty years adored by his five grandchildren"
Rather than
"Bill was a grumpy old sod who bickered with his wfe of fifty years Brenda on a daily basis
His 3 kids visited out of duty and he had little interest in his five grandchildren "

I know what DOES happen and what is "expected", I just stated I don't understand how this came to be or is right. I have been to family funerals where my abuser was exalted... despite almost everyone present knowing what they did and what they were really like. I don't think this is right or fair tbh, Someone can live a bad life, harm others and still get to go out with a fabulous sendoff.
Some things in society need to be re-conditioned, was all I was saying
