Why is Liam Payne seen as good?

I didn’t understand this at the time of his death, and I still
don’t. When he died, and afterwards his girlfriend made statements about how wonderful he was and how much he loved her. But he treated her appallingly by cheating on her and paying for prostitutes. If he hasn’t been in a boy band and wealthy, would people still be saying he was a wonderful partner? He chose a life of drugs and using women’s bodies over being a loving and kind person. I don’t get the love for his supposed ‘kind’ boyfriend traits. He didn’t seem loving to me.

I think sometimes when someone dies who is young, in such an unexpected way, people gloss over the bad times/their less endearing character traits because they are shocked and devastated. They can be put on a pedestal.

momager22 · 03/08/2026 07:34

I have a friend with a brother like this. Recently diagnosed with severe ADHD and mental health issues and sectioned which explains a lot of his impulsive, damaging, irresponsible, quite frankly awful behaviours. As well as self
Medicating with drugs and alcohol. He’s also a good bloke and loves his family very much and is a good bloke when he’s not ‘off on one’.
I think two things can be true at once, and when being thrust into the limelight at a young age and mental health issues could explain some of Liam’s behaviours, he may ‘get away with it’.
It would be interesting to see how his life would have turned out had he not had the life he had as a teen. If he’d be ‘normal’ or if he was just a dickhead - who knows. Same as Britney/ Amy winehouse etc. Some people’s psyche simply can’t cope with it and they hit the self destruct button.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 03/08/2026 07:37

She wanted a payday and her 15mins.

I thought it was widely known he was a right scuzzer / loser / druggie.

Its also fair to say 2 things can be true at once...

Abracadeborah · 03/08/2026 07:47

I don’t think anyone’s saying he was a wonderful partner. He was a selfish druggy who did whatever he wanted. His ex just wants to carry on making money off him.

MyDarlingRose · 03/08/2026 07:47

Presumably she knew who he was at his core behind the pain. People often see the bad behaviour as a symptom not as the person.

PeonyBulb · 03/08/2026 07:47

He was young. He died. It’s sad.

RoachFish · 03/08/2026 07:49

I completely agree OP. It's completely puzzling to me too. He also treated his ex gf and her parents horribly, long after they had broken up and whilst he was with his new gf. It's not like he was some musical genious either, he was just a boyband member formed on a reality show.

pinkandwhiteroses · 03/08/2026 07:55

Because it’s normal for people to only talk about the good parts of someone who has passed away.

Lexy2345 · 03/08/2026 08:03

He was severely unwell due to his mental health and addiction issues, and made irrational decisions due to this. He wasn’t able to get into recovery before he sadly died. I don’t think he was a bad man, just unable to cope with life after One Direction. Anyone who dies young, of unnatural causes, will be remembered with kindness.

Im not aware of his music but being part of a boy band doesnt mean he wasn't talented

DeathBanana · 03/08/2026 08:13

I’m inclined to feel sympathy if you can trace a persons impulsive / poor / whatever choices directly back to a cause.

thoae boys (and it happens with most boy / girl bands) were worked like animals. In fact you would not work an animal the way these kids get treated. It’s little wonder almost all of them end up with mental health issues which in turn lead to substance abuse which in turn leads to poor behaviour. I think it’s a bit of a glossed over scandal. Teenagers treated that way.

LooksLikeIPickedTheWrongWeekToQuitDrinking · 03/08/2026 08:20

A disturbed young father died. It’s sad even if he had problems and wasn’t a saint.

An as for “just” being in a (hugely successful!) boy band, Payne was a good singer and strongest live performer of the band. Not a musical genius perhaps, but nor are most successful musicians.

He had some talent. He was an OK singer and he co-wrote some of their songs, but didn't really succeed on his own. He was still not a musical genious though. Had he been I could have understood why people would still praise him regardless of how he was as a person.

Had his exgf written about some of the terrible things he did to her on here people would have not been saying that it was just the drugs or that he is suffering from bad mental health but that he is a good guy really. People would have said ltb, report him to the police, do the freedom program, send your burly brothers around to sort him out, etc.

Dollymylove · 03/08/2026 08:35

Its not exactly unknown for youngsters who make it big in the show biz/music industry, to end up going off the rails.
The money, the adulation, the temptation.
Here was someone who made it big as a youngster, the money, the adulation, the trappings of success.
Shame nobody intervened and got him into a rehab programme for the sake of his little boy who is now fatherless.(or maybe people tried but he refused to listen)
"Sex and drugs and rock'n' roll", as they say........

But prostitutes? How many women like Amy or Britney during a mental health crisis or bipolar episode used prostitutes? I can’t think of any women who have gone off the rails due to young celebrity and money pay men to have sex with them as a result.

If he hadn't been in a boy band during his formative years he probably wouldn't have had the issues he had.
A young man who was a father died. It's tragic. I think the stories being run about sex workers and drugs are disgusting. It's so disrespectful to tarnish someone like that after their death and have it out in the public domain for his son and all his sons peers to read.

You don't have to be a musical genius to be successful nor should you be. A good performer and entertainer are enough, which he was.

Well men are are known to exploit women sexually all the time. Women not so much!

Tableforjoan · 03/08/2026 09:50

It happens when people die. They try to gloss over the bad bits. The don’t speak ill of the dead stuff.

The tide was turning on Diana then she died and became a saint.

Payne had the horrible thing of being a rich young celeb and didn’t want or had nobody willing to rail him in. All that money and whatever demons he had were too much. His gf at the time was just after fame and fortune for herself. If only whatever he had with Cheryl had worked out for him and Bear. Because that’s the important person his son left behind with those pictures of his dads dead body on the internet.

Lomonald · 03/08/2026 09:51

Well she was his girlfriend and he died what did you expect her to say ? I imagine she had the same sort of lifestyle he did with drink/drugs/partying so to her he was a lovely boyfriend.

You can have negative opinions of Liam Payne I mean to me he was an out of control young man who wasted his life, to others he was sad addict.

LaLaBland · 03/08/2026 09:52

I think it's the fame + young death combination.

First, I think some people who aren't fans strongly believe "never talk ill of the dead" so they won't say anything negative, and then you have fans who feel sympathetic and also won't say anything negative.

I agree that if he was still alive, and a normal dad - who had a hard upbringing/life but did these things - he would be getting a lot of criticism and 0 sympathy.

At the same time, what does it achieve to be negative about a dead celebrity (assuming there was no criminal behaviour beyond drug taking)?

https://news.sky.com/story/lily-allen-i-slept-with-female-escorts-on-tour-11488740 .

Lily wasn't bipolar but she was lonely. So that obviously makes it ok to exploit another woman.

Deadleaves77 · 03/08/2026 10:01

Is he regarded as good? There was a lot of discussion on his bad behaviour around the time of his death and in the lead up. His girlfriend is obviously going to say she loved him and he was great, I dont think that's the general consensus

Its just a sad story, he was clearly very troubled and couldn't cope with fame and the subsequent loss of it. You'd been watching him self destruct for years. I think you can be saddened by someone dying young and acknowledge they weren't perhaps the nicest person

I think not saying anything negative is fine and understandable. It's the people who are worshipping him who creates the issue. If everyone had just said: it's a shame that he did the things he did, hopefully he is in a better place now etc. then he would have just been left to rest in peace. It's when people are trying to paint a picture of someone he clearly wasn't that it becomes hard to just ignore the fact that he used and abused women. It will never become easy for me to gloss over that just because he used to sing pop songs.

Cheese55 · 03/08/2026 10:56

Ozzy Osborne abused Sharon for years and thats been airbrushed away
