Did you know there are two Aldi’s?

Aldi Nord and Aldi Sud

originally started by brothers who fell out over selling tobacco. Rather than following the puma/adidas nuclear route they split the company and still share branding/own products etc.

I believe the UK Aldi is Sud and the French Aldi is Nord as they agreed not to compete in international markets

a lesson to all siblings who fall out I suppose!

I should have gone for the AI suggested title which focussed on the brotherly feud🤣

Yes, I remember watching a programme about this at some point in the dim and distant past.

BillieWiper · 02/08/2026 15:38

Aldi doesn't sell tobacco! Maybe that's why 🤣

LoafofSellotape · 02/08/2026 15:39

Yes I did know.

UrbanFan · 02/08/2026 15:42

I did not know. Very interesting 🤔

likelysuspect · 02/08/2026 15:43

I didnt know that

I would like to know why there are so many Aldis, yet so few Lidls

It is annoying.

Its because Aldi is far better than Lidl 😂

Yes because it’s Aldi Sud! Despite the fallout being in the 60’s the Sud have maintained the stance

I did know that 😁

can’t remember how I know that but I do!

BeardySchnauzer · 02/08/2026 15:46

I also love that the adidas/puma town was nicknamed ‘town of the bent necks’ because everyone took sides and would check shoes to know which side you were on! Apparently the brothers burial plots are as far away as they can possibly be in the towns graveyard!

I bet Aldi Nud has the products I want in stock

Busybookworm · 02/08/2026 15:53

I never knew this! How intriguing.

mamaduckbone · 02/08/2026 15:55

I did know this (my sister lives in Germany) but didn’t know about Adidas and Puma - interesting!

Purplecatshopaholic · 02/08/2026 15:57

I did not know this. I will sleep better tonight.

7238SM · 02/08/2026 15:57

I'd knew about the feuding brothers, but for some reason thought one went on to became lidl and the other aldi.

Strangely I'd also heard of the aldi sud and nord though but never realised the reason for it.

ShanghaiDiva · 02/08/2026 15:58

I did know this as I lived in Germany for 9 years. In Austria it’s called Hofer which is part of Aldi South.

I assume Aldi bought an existing brand but changed the branding as it looks kind of weird!! The Aldi branding is quite distinctive

Yes, I think they bought an existing chain of supermarkets.

whirlyhead · 02/08/2026 16:04

We have Aldi Nord in Spain and it does not have all the interesting makeup etc you get in the UK stores which are Aldi sud. Swizz.

IaltagDhubh · 02/08/2026 16:08

Yes, Aldi Nord has better chocolate. Always have to stock up on the coffee chocolate when we go to Germany.

spiderlight · 02/08/2026 16:12

I did know this, but only because my son has a part-time job in Aldi and comes home with all sorts of random Aldi-related facts!

Cherrysoup · 02/08/2026 16:12

I thought Aldi and Lidl were the 2 brothers’ shops?

Zephyrcrossing · 02/08/2026 16:13

My cousin lives in New York state.
I think she still shops at Aldi supermarket.
It operates under Aldi Sud. They are part of the same global brand family started in Germany, they are managed as separate regional divisions in each country, so says Google.
I went once with her, quite a few years ago. It was definitely a discount type shop then.

BeardySchnauzer · 02/08/2026 16:17

The name Aldi comes from their surname

(Albrecht + Discount)

so I guess neither wanted to give it up
