Did you know there are two Aldi’s?

Aldi Nord and Aldi Sud

originally started by brothers who fell out over selling tobacco. Rather than following the puma/adidas nuclear route they split the company and still share branding/own products etc.

I believe the UK Aldi is Sud and the French Aldi is Nord as they agreed not to compete in international markets

a lesson to all siblings who fall out I suppose!

If you want more German supermarket crazy trivia the wiki on Lidl gives a great overview of the history. Including the main guy realising he shouldn’t use his name (Schwarz) as “Black Market” isn’t the best name for a legit store; losing the rights to Lidl and then paying off a random pensioner with the last name Lidl so he could use the name!

I knew about the row and split years ago. In the USA one trades as Aldi, one as trader joes (they bought an existing chain)

Do British supermarkets have such intrigue behind any of them?

So the Lidl family are germanys richest - Aldi sud come in 8th and Aldi Nord come in 10th. Not bad

I’m not really interested in trainers either but it’s a really interesting drama and worth a read!

The cautionary tales podcast has a good episode on the Adidas/Puma brothers, I’m not interested in trainers but found it fascinating!
