Following on from the mum thread who is the best fictional dad. I’m going for Atticus Finch from Mocking bird, and Bill Smugs from Enid Blyton Adventure Series.

Atticus Finch is a great father, but he put his children, Jem and Scout, at real physical risk by defending Tom Robinson. He faced intense racial hostility from the town, and his children were verbally abused, threatened, and ultimately attacked in the dark by a vengeful Bob Ewell, who broke Jem’s arm.

The dad in This Is Us 💔

Oh yes!!

Cherrycola4 · 01/08/2026 20:04

Joe Gargery, who is Pip’s uncle but definitely a beautiful father figure.

Phil Dunphy in Modern Family; also have soft spot for Jay.

But best of all Eugene Levy as ‘Jim’s dad’ in American Pie films.

This is who I meant not Kevin oops

Atticus had to, I think, whatever the cost.

Sandy Cohen!! How did I forget?! Great dad, kind of annoying husband, albeit a very loving one.

I’ve just been watching Midsomer Murders and I remember that I really love the interaction between DCI Tom Barnaby and his daughter Cully. (Although he does regularly let her down!)

Charles Ingles!

Mr Tom from Goodnight Mr Tom became a great Dad for William.

Pa Ingalls was terrible imo! Couldn't settle to anything!

I agree. He stated that he could not face his children or hold his head up in town if he refused.

As a child I always thought Sara Crewe's dad from A Little Princess was so, so lovely.

However, as an adult I cannot comprehend how he went off to war with absolutely no plan for her should he die, when they literally had no living relatives! Also that headmistress was a witch but he really shouldn't have undermined her about Sara's locket in front of the whole class. Totally gave Sara a marked card there.

Mick Shipman 100% great dad. Larry Lamb once said it was funny how Mick was so nice and he absolutely wasn't!

How about Sara Crewe's Dad from the book?

The film updated the story to World War One (and also changed a major plot point to make him MIA rather than really dead as he is in the book) but in the book, he doesn't go off to war and is also a lovely dad.

It was one of my favourite books as a child and I read it over and over again.

Matthew Cuthbert - given all the votes for Marilla on the other thread.

Not so sure about Pa Ingalls. Seen through Laura's eyes he was a fun caring dad, but I don't know how Ma tolerated the constant being on the move.

Agree! I love him.
