Krakow recommendations please!

I’m going to Krakow in October, does anyone have recommendations for tour companies to go to Auschwitz. Or other places, my friend doesn’t want to do the Salt mines, but has suggested a trip to see the Black Madonna.
We like history, churches, museums etc.
Thanks

Banksy museum. Schindler’s factory, free walking tour Jewish quarter.

professionalcommentreader · 01/08/2026 11:38

Actually all the free walking tours (you tip) but the Jewish quarter stayed with me.

We used Krakow Direct for transfers and Auschwitz tours. Can’t fault them.

We done a private tour which was more expensive but absolutely worth it in our opinion.

We stayed in the Jewish quarter at M29 hotel which was perfect, we walked to Schindlers factory and done self guided tour, the castle and everything was in walking distance.

It’s a lovely city.

It's very easy to arrange a trip to Auschwitz without needing to use a tour company.

You use the museum website to arrange a tour at the site itself, https://visit.auschwitz.org/, Visit for individuals. These are top class and run in a professional and very sympathetic manner. So all you need to do is to get a coach to the car park and back, or to get the train and walk the 20 minutes from the railway station. The destination you're aiming for to enter the museum is Miejsce Pamięci i Muzeum Auschwitz-Birkenau on Więźniów Oświęcimia.

The Schindler factory can often sell out a long time in advance.

The salt mine is more interesting than I was expecting.

We used Mr. Shuttle for our trips to Auschwitz and the salt mine. They don't cancel at the last minute like some other companies do. They are very reliable.
If you want a good laugh, the wax museum is absolutely hilarious!

Branleuse · 01/08/2026 11:58

Salt mines are amazing though. Much more interesting than I expected.
We did a day trip to Zakopane which was very pretty but touristy.

Just be aware get your guide is often more expensive than booking yourself.

VideoVox · 01/08/2026 13:29

I used Hello Cracow for the salt mines, they were good. They do Auschwitz as well. Stayed in the Jewish Quarter like PP, it was lovely.

InQuiresandplaceswheretheysing · 01/08/2026 15:15

We are staying in the Old Town.

The salt mines are amazing so would be worth going to.
Schindler museum. Book a tour.
As someone else mentioned, the wax museum is very funny and there is a good vodka bar a few doors down

nauticant · 01/08/2026 15:56

Here's my controversial take. Since I was in Poland I thought I should try Polish cuisine but by the end of the holiday I wish I'd gone for pizzas and pasta instead.

We didn't do Auschwitz, as we've visited a concentration camp before (very interesting, but very thought provoking, so didn't feel we wanted to do one again).

However, came on here to say, Krakow is lovely - fairly compact and feels very safe in Old Town. It's a lot more expensive to eat in the square, but there are some nice restaurants in the side streets off so investigate.

We did the Schindlers Factory as well, spent quite a bit of time there. Also, the chairs in Ghetto Heroes Square are very informative and thought provoking.

Give yourself some time in the town, it's lovely just pottering around taking in architecture, visiting church or tower on spur of moment.

Maddy70 · 01/08/2026 16:46

You can just get the bus to Auschwitz it's very easy
Salt mines are impressive and worth going to. Again you can get a bus easily
The walking tours are excellent especially the Jewish one

corblimeymlud · 01/08/2026 16:46

I love Krakow. While it may be expensive on the square it's still a bargain . So much great eating there.

nauticant · 01/08/2026 17:18

The trains, which go to close to the Auschwitz museum and to the salt mine, are a joy to use. The key points are that when you go to the ticket machines and are presented with options in Polish, if you look around you'll see a UK flag symbol and pressing that gets everything in English. Then it's straightforward. On the trains there's plenty of information about where you are and the stations that are coming up. Inexpensive.

Yes. They were excellent!

I’ve downloaded the app and booked the Auschwitz tour and a golf buggy tour. The walking tours you seem to have to pay for.

Free walking tours. You do tip of course. The one we did was excellent. I've seen the golf buggies whizzing around.
