So itchy

Tips for itchy skin please. Its driving me insane. Ive tried a few different creams and tried antihistamines. The antihistamines work for all of an hour before I'm itching again.
I did have a blood test today, the nurse said they were checking my b12, iron, folic acid, thyroid, liver function and kidney function. Should get the results by tuesday, but what else can I do for the itch, especially at night. I full on cried to my boyfriend Wednesday night because I just couldn't get comfortable and the itch was too much. Last night I didnt fall asleep till gone 1am then woke up at 3am and didnt fall asleep agsin till 6am then had to wake up at half 8 for work. I'm exhausted

You can go to the pharmacist right now to get something, but I wouldn't buy a lot until you get your results and then hopefully they can actually solve it at source, or at least recommend specific medication.

They recommended suncream and loratadine which arent helping so got some plamers coco butter lotion and benadryl that helps take the edge off but not for long

Don’t use Dove! E45 shower cream or similar.

get a massive pot of Epsom salts and put lots in a bath (like a teacup full. This works (I have recurrent psoriasis on 80% of body).

when people say to put E45 or similar on you do actually need a LOT. At its worst I was putting an entire 500ml pot of E45 cream on in 1 day.

if you are really itching for a while invest in silk slip to wear under clothes and for bed. Or cotton at very least.

Oh I meant don’t use Dove but DO use E45. You need the most inert and non perfumed thing possible

My all over itch was caused by iron deficiency anaemia. I had it for a couple of months before being diagnosed and starting iron tablets. As well as all the things already mentioned, the one thing that helped while I was waiting for diagnosis was keeping the skin cool - using ice packs/ cold compresses that you keep in the freezer. They sort of numb the skin and take the edge off the itch, especially helped when trying to get to sleep! Hope you get to the root of it soon and get treatment.

Anemia was what I was thinking. I phoned the doctors monday explain my symptoms and said I think I'm anemic again (this is the first time itching from it) and they got me in today for a bloodtest. So its been quite quick thankfully.

I’m so allergic to everything I’m constantly itchy. Moo goo is my current favourite cream and aveeno bath wash. I take lots of anti histamine too.

VividDeer · 03/08/2026 18:07

Mine was caused by medication

At night I took phenergan, gp said I could take 2 if I needed. Saved my sanity. Daytime antihistamines did nothing.

That must be awful. Antihistamines only work for a few hours before the itchiness returns and thats the one a day one.

sirry If mentioned before but haven’t time to RTFT. Have you had your iron levels checked?

BCBird · 06/08/2026 22:37

Instead of scratching pat lightly. Also putting ice packs on body wrapped in a cloth, helps.

chimichangaz · 06/08/2026 22:43

I had a horrendous rash a few years ago (caused by non cotton pjs I believe), it was worst on my legs and at night. What particularly soothed the itch was to soak flannels in a mixture of milk and cool water (say 60/40), wring them out but not too much and lay them over the rash.
i sympathise hugely - I honestly felt like getting my legs chopped off the itch was so bad.

Pearofplums · 06/08/2026 22:46

I once had a period of intense itching like you describe, which was unbearable and made me really depressed. Poor you. It ended up calming down a lot but I still have days that I itch, usually correlating to high pollen or a particular food I'm sensitive to, which I used to eat loads of! Antihistamines help me and I also use Epaderm cream sporadically (you can buy a massive container of it online) if I'm particularly itchy or dry, and it seems to help as well.

When i was on sertaline the heat was awful for making my skin itchy i used to come out in hives. But im not on it anymore. That said the heat definitely isn't helping. I had a blood test this afternoon so just got to wait for the results for that to find out my next step.

I was going to say is it hives. They do tend to come back if you’ve had them once and triggers can be anything and everything. I have had them off and on for years. I take fexofenadine 180mg - anywhere from one to four pills a day depending how bad it is. Try two a day for a few days and see if it improves. I get a bulk order on prescription.
