So itchy

Tips for itchy skin please. Its driving me insane. Ive tried a few different creams and tried antihistamines. The antihistamines work for all of an hour before I'm itching again.
I did have a blood test today, the nurse said they were checking my b12, iron, folic acid, thyroid, liver function and kidney function. Should get the results by tuesday, but what else can I do for the itch, especially at night. I full on cried to my boyfriend Wednesday night because I just couldn't get comfortable and the itch was too much. Last night I didnt fall asleep till gone 1am then woke up at 3am and didnt fall asleep agsin till 6am then had to wake up at half 8 for work. I'm exhausted

I take cetirizine hydrochloride, 10-40mg a day depending on the itchiness level, I use this shower gel https://www.boots.com/sanex-skin-therapy-anti-itchiness-and-anti-irritation-shower-gel-body-wash-720ml-10388617
and this lotion https://www.boots.com/vaseline-intensive-care-body-lotion-aloe-soothe-400ml-10183005

I also use E45 anti itch cream on patches that are persistent.

Have you been to a dermatologist or had an allergy panel done?

youngwhippersnapper · 31/07/2026 18:29

Could it be menopause related formication?

You have to use a fair bit then.
Ive not know. Its an all over itch. Doctors did a blood test today to rule out deficiency. Dont think its an allergy as nothing as changed

Im so given the lule warm bath ago tonight. I usually shower. Think pretty much all my clothes are polyester. Going to invest in that cream when I go shopping next. Saw it for around £8 so not tried that one yet

Hi, @inkgirl , I was on your can't sleep thread so I recall you were going crazy with itchy skin!

Stronger antihistamine- Fexofenadine available at Tesco etc.

Tepid bath with oats balled into a flannel, sock etc used as a poultice or just in water to soothe skin.

Whatever cream you can tolerate on your skin, keep cool and cut nails right down. Keep your hands busy ( I play games do crosswords) and try to stay calm.

smallglassbottle · 31/07/2026 18:52

I find Dove bar good as it's hypoallergenic and soothes dry skin, which can cause itchiness. The CeraVe products are also very good.

Shampoo can also cause itchiness if it's running over your body when you rinse. Only rinse with your head tipped forward so the shampoo gets rinsed out, but not down your body.

Quite a few products have been cheapened recently, so it could be something like that irritating the skin.

LoyalGoldMentor · 31/07/2026 18:54

Invest in a wool quilt and pillows. My best ever purchase!

Iheartmysmart · 31/07/2026 18:55

I had really, really itchy skin when my ferritin was very low. It was worse at night and almost felt like I had things crawling on me. I ended up taking piriton before bed because it made me drowsy, didn’t make any difference to the itching though. It’s such a horrible feeling and I’d also end up in tears some nights because it.

I have recently changed shampoo because it was on offer so it might well be that

For me it was lymphoma. I know you've already been to the Dr so hopefully they've ruled that out, but raise it again if you have any other symptoms - weight loss, fatigue, enlarged lymph nodes, night sweats.

Sorry I can't help in the meantime, nothing worked for me until the lymphoma was treated.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 31/07/2026 19:00

Scabies? There’s loads about atm

youngwhippersnapper · 31/07/2026 19:04

I’ve had scabies a couple of times ( HCP), and the itching was very intense, especially in skin creases, eg between fingers.

Piemam · 31/07/2026 19:10

Agreeing with previous PP re new products, I also cut SLS (sodium laureth sulphate) out of my products, toothpaste included. It helped massively. Not enough! But still.

user1471453601 · 31/07/2026 19:11

I take fexofenadine, use E45 bath oil when having a cool shower and use sudocrem on persistent itchy patches.

I also never use any product the contains SLS ( it stands for something like sodium blah blah blah sulphate).

it's taken me about 10 years to find a regime that works but I still live in fear of the itch getting bad again. I think the impact it can have on your life is underestimated. When you never ever get one second where you can just rest for days on end. I really understand how bad you feel.

I do also have tiredness and bruising easily which I think is whats making them think deficiency.
Sorry to hear about your lymphoma

Prescribed high dose Fexofenadine! Speak to a pharmacist or dr but I took two a day for a while. Someone in my family gets this though, only over the summer months!

Pistachiocake · 31/07/2026 19:25

You can go to the pharmacist right now to get something, but I wouldn't buy a lot until you get your results and then hopefully they can actually solve it at source, or at least recommend specific medication.

When i was on sertaline the heat was awful for making my skin itchy i used to come out in hives. But im not on it anymore. That said the heat definitely isn't helping. I had a blood test this afternoon so just got to wait for the results for that to find out my next step.
