Save my husband. Help me drown him out.

I need something to play through ear pods that will gently drown out the noise of DH’s existence, without distracting me. He has hyperfocus and makes so much noise just existing that I want to scream. Think, two radios on at the same time in his office with the door wide open, rushing about in slides that slap the floor with every step.

I have fibro and get overtired, overwhelmed and overstimulated very easily. I can’t listen to talk radio or songs, as they are too distracting. I also get tinnitus. I need to concentrate at work.

Can you recommend something like whale song or elevator music or white noise that isn’t going to be interrupted at intervals by loud adverts?

Bonus points if there’s some magical auditory reprocessing thing that will ticktock away in my ears and leave me calmer and less in need of an extra patio. It would be a shame, after 35 years!

I was particularly tired yesterday after work, and the noise of the radios was driving me potty. I got into a pickle, turned Alexa up so loud trying to drown him out that then she couldn’t hear me trying to turn her down 🫣

TL:DR? AI suggested title is a very tame “Recommendations for calming background audio to block household noise while working”.

DS plays the guitar and I find the sound of the metronome app he uses very relaxing. You can set it to different speeds and the 60 beats per minute option is quite soothing.

pinkandwhiteroses · 31/07/2026 17:41

Have you tried shoving his two radios up his arse?

This may cause him to emit even more noise though.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 31/07/2026 19:15

I do love a Gregorian chant!

The radio thing is complicated. I think he plays what he’s listening to on the echo, but the thing he’s downloading/uploading/recording is playing on the computer. We had a conversation about it a while ago, and there’s no other way to work it.

But the door closing will help. He’s very in and out, three things on the go at a time so tends to leave everything open.

I’m making him sound bad- and he is- but I’m also hypersensitive. Princess and the pea type. We are total opposites, he has massively dulled senses comparison. Blissfully unaware of noises, smells, tastes… no interoception to speak of 😅.

Horse lips noise? Confused

Yes what is this?

OP, respectfully, it appears you have accidentally married a robot. 😔

Yes what is this?

Is it that kind of thing where you make your lips go all loose and blow out? Sounds like a horse!

You have my sympathy OP, my DH is similar. Has a habit of switching on the TV, radio and his phone. And then often leaves the room with all
three still playing. Drives me nuts.

arethereanyleftatall · 31/07/2026 19:28

Is anyone able to tell me how living like this can possibly be better than being single?

Anyahyacinth · 31/07/2026 19:30

The BBC App has ocean sounds without interruption and more. I used them for a long hospital stay. I think they might be badged for playing for children to fall asleep. Downloadable too

Elboob · 31/07/2026 19:36

@PrizedPickledPopcorn
I have misaphonia - it is a definite thing of being intensely irritated by sounds.
Even if you don't have this you are putting up with A LOT with all this noise!

I had a colleague at work who hammered on his keyboard all day and ate loudly. Drove me massively insane. I drowned it out with stuff on YouTube.

I can highly recommend this person who used to be called YogaDuke but is now called TexasHighDef (I know it sounds weird but they are really good quality tracks). The rain on a tin roof, or rain and thunder, or rain and a stream - are all super. I've linked their channel below. Hour-long tracks with a really pleasant sound that shuts out random crap.
I don't remember there being adverts but if there are you can pay for YouTube subscription to get rid of adverts.

I hope this helps.

Also tell DH to be more considerate and shut the bloody door!!!!

Before you continue to YouTube

Rain sounds good, @YorkieTheRabbit , I’ll investigate. I haven’t got to grips with Spotify. Must have a look.

And actually an automatic door closer could be really helpful.

He is still struggling to learn that something which isn’t a problem for him, can be a problem for me. He’s inclined to say, ‘no it’s fine’, about something I’ve just said is an issue. I point it out. Every time. He’s amazed. Every time.

I use this at night so I can tune out husband TV. I don't like silence as any noise disturbs me so this is really soothing. 12 hours no adverts.

I work with a bloke who is constantly pom-pom-pomming. That's when he's not whistling or humming. He has no idea he's doing it. It drives me insane. We've nicknamed him 'Whistling Bob' (not his real name). In my head I call him much worse. I pity his poor wife but then I think at least she gets a break when he's asleep and not making stupid fucking noises.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 31/07/2026 20:03

This is truly wonderful- a whole smorgasbord of noise smotherers!

Yes, there’s misophonia, @Elboob .

We’re an unfortunate pairing in many ways. I’m sure I’m also very annoying in a variety of ways.

EnjoythemoneyJane · 31/07/2026 20:29

I can also recommend Good Knights Sleep on YT & Spotify. He’s a really good Irish writer and storyteller who does loads of different stuff, but on the end of each 30-40 minute tale there’s about 6-8 hours of very soothing background noise, no ads.

I started listening to overcome DH’s snoring, and it’s one of the few things that’s guaranteed to get me to sleep, but it’s also handy if you need to concentrate on something.

Lentilcakes · 31/07/2026 21:07

Have you looked at Loop earbuds?

Kimmers4334 · 31/07/2026 21:19

My neighbour was playing loud garden music earlier while I was trying to read and the active noise cancelling on my headphones doesn’t work very well so I tried out all the iPhone background sounds and found ocean was the best. It makes a lot of sound without being high pitched or having extra distracting noises. I’m sure someone must find it useful but “babble” is my idea of hell

I thought it was just my DP! I’d come home to tv on, radio on in garden, second radio on in shed and dp busy at the bottom of the garden unable to hear any of the above.

Now he tends to leave the radio on in his room, radio in shed and be watching tv in his garden room. The noise of the first annoys me so I’ll turn it off but why can’t he do it? Think of the bills!!!

Darkgreenbottle · 31/07/2026 21:38

Get Tapo plugs
You can sit there and Zap! turn everything off
Loathe noisy people

When I need to concentrate and drown out the noise of family life, or if I'm working in the staffroom and people are talking, I play edm tunes on Spotify through noise cancelling headphones. Because there's no lyrics and the beat is steady and monotonous, I can focus. There are some good playlists for software developers that I pick and choose tracks from and make my own playlist.

wanderingwillows · 02/08/2026 07:00

Loop earplugs!!!! Look them up
