Nope, not underestimating anything. I've been crew on an aircraft with an explosive decompression.

What was that? “Explosive decompression” makes it sound like a bomb.

So in case of a bomb, ie the plane from Egypt which had a bomb in a can of Coke, do passengers lose consciousness/die instantly? Or will we never know?

NotDarkGothicMama · 11/07/2026 08:37

The man had his seatbelt on, which is why only his head and shoulders that out of the window. I'd be holding onto him for dear life if I was his wife too! Although I might have accidentally undone exH's seatbelt in panic...

Sherararara · 11/07/2026 08:40

Sucked off on a Ryanair flight? Thought that was par for the course.

beigetriangle · 11/07/2026 08:48

in case of an emergency a fly by can look through the window if passengers are concious.

@AMurderofMurderingCrowsso was it the seatbelt that stopped him getting sucked out or the wife holding onto his legs?

explosive = sudden force

potterspot · 11/07/2026 08:50

How would a seatbelt considering the position of the them stop a child getting sucked out?

rwalker · 11/07/2026 08:57

As people have said it’s happened on other airlines

there will be a full on investigation and consequences after this happening

i don’t get the hate for Ryan air never had a bad fight
there very transparent about there charges yet time after time people who don’t agree with them still book then call them fit to burn
If you don’t like it don’t use them

It could be caused by a bomb blowing a hole in the pressurised cabin or like the Ryanair flight, debris from the engine causing the window to blow out.

If a bomb went off on the aircraft it would depend how bad it was. If the passengers survived the blast, got their oxygen masks on quickly and the aircraft descended safely then it's entirely possible they could survive.

The seatbelt would have helped. If he wasn't wearing it, his wife (and other passengers) may not have had the chance to hold on to him.

It must have been terrifying for all involved.

”if the plane descended safely”? How does that work when it’s blasted into two pieces?

I think I’ll go via Eurostar next holiday.

If you get a rapid decompression (used to be referred to as explosive but that term obviously can cause confusion) at altitude there's a figure known as Time of Useful Consciousness (TUC) hat comes into play...

That's the interval between the decompression and the time you become unable to think/act in a useful manner if you don't get onto supplementary oxygen.

At high level (airliner cruising levels) that can be a large handful of seconds, at lower altitudes it can be a miinute plus...at the level the recent Ryanair event happened many people might have barely been effected, especially if they stayed seated and weren't doing anything mentally or physically challenging.

Actually, Ryanair has one of the best safety records in the world.

They fly with the minimum of fuel. I watched a documentary where they have a list of pilots and the amount of fuel they have used. The list is divided into red , amber and green. Those who carry more fuel that RA would prefer get on the red list. Bad and noted in other words.
The pilots felt under pressure to almost fly with fuel fumes.

This had made my flying neuroses even worse! So TUC is not total unconsciousness? So the plane that was shot down over Ukraine and they found passengers in their seats…? It doesn’t bear thinking about.

How do you Cabin Crew people go to work everyday?

Did Greta and her team have a hand in this, to bring on the sentiment “I will never fly again”?

Yes I know, tin hat firmly on.

EasternStandard · 11/07/2026 09:41

I just think of a child in that seat and it’s freaking me out. Ik it’s very rare but still it happened to this poor man.

Ryanair's fuel policy is pretty much in line with the rest of the industry and is certainly legit in terms of requirements set by the regulator.

These days most if not all airlines discourage carrying extra fuel above that required to meet the legal reserves when there is no reason foto carry more, and many airlines have fuel "league" tables so pilots can see how their fuel.management sits relative to their piers.

I worked at one, we had the tables, TBF we didn't use red/green etc.

ClearlyNoIdea · 10/07/2026 23:15

Oh lord here we go. The RA bashers. As another poster stated RA have an excellent safety record and it was one of those freak things. Could have been any pland anywhere. There is still more chance of being hit by a bus than being sucked out an airplane widow. And to the poster who thinks she should cancel her RA flights, it could be BA or EJ tomorrow

Wasn’t the flight operated by Air Malta anyway? So any safety issues would be on them.

My Ryanair flight was operated by Air Malta but it was a Ryanair branded plane with Ryanair cabin crew and recorded messages (about the duty free offers).

That was Ryanair’s response to the questions posed. The Regulators guidelines.
Which I think they stretched to the limit.
I would much prefer an airline that had plenty enough fuel. Not the bare minimum.

Monty36 · 11/07/2026 10:05

It would make me wonder about maintenance and what cost cutting is done there.
Because fundamentally you cannot fly people for next to nothing without cutting back somewhere.

Or it could have just been a freak accident.

I think people need to calm down. You’re more likely to get killed in a car crash than because of a plane. Yes it gets the headlines as it’s unusual, but there’s been a couple of road fatalities in my county just this week.

Thanks I am perfectly calm and not seeking to engineer some sort of panic.
But if a window falls out of a plane, then yes, it would make me wonder about maintenance.
The thing with planes is that a window falling out should not occur.
